Welcome to Snæfellsnes!

After a long journey from Helsinki, we've finally arrived at the enchanting Snæfellsnes Peninsula! The anticipation has been building for months, and today marked the beginning of our family's Icelandic camping adventure. It's a blend of excitement and slight nervousness, especially when traveling with Aino. But seeing her bright eyes makes it all worthwhile.

We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant. The cozy atmosphere was just what we needed after our travels. The restaurant had large windows, offering incredible views of the surrounding landscape.

Snæfellsnes Visitor Center

Our first stop was the Snæfellsnes Visitor Center. It's such a great place to get oriented and learn about the area. We grabbed some maps and brochures, and the staff were incredibly helpful, answering all our questions about hiking trails and local attractions. Aino was particularly fascinated by the exhibits on Icelandic folklore. As a librarian, I always appreciate a good information hub, and this one didn't disappoint.

Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint

Next, we headed to the Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint. Oh my, the views were simply breathtaking! The rugged coastline, the crashing waves, and the dramatic basalt columns created a scene straight out of a Nordic saga. We took a leisurely walk along the cliffs, marveling at the natural rock formations and the countless seabirds nesting on the ledges. I tried to capture the scenery with my camera, but no photo could truly do it justice. Markus was particularly excited, pointing out different geological formations, while Aino was busy spotting various bird species.

It was here, standing on the edge of the world, that I truly understood the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland. The wind was strong, and the air was crisp, but the views were worth every shiver. I felt a deep connection to the land, a sense of belonging that resonated with my own Nordic heritage. We spent a good hour just soaking it all in, breathing in the fresh sea air and listening to the symphony of the ocean.

Lunch at Hótel Snaefellsnes

After all that fresh air, we were ready for lunch. We stopped at Hótel Snaefellsnes, where we enjoyed some delicious Icelandic fare. I had the fish of the day, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. Markus opted for the lamb soup, a hearty and warming dish that hit the spot. Aino, ever the adventurous eater, tried the local Skyr with berries and loved it! The hotel itself was charming, with a cozy, rustic feel. It's definitely a place I'd consider staying at in the future.

Bárður Snæfellsás Statue

Our next stop was the Bárður Snæfellsás Statue. This imposing monument stands as a tribute to the legendary half-giant and protector of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The statue, created by Ragnar Kjartansson, is incredibly striking, depicting Bárður holding a large rock, symbolizing his connection to the earth and his strength. Aino was fascinated by the story of Bárður, and we spent some time reading about his saga. It's amazing how much folklore and mythology is woven into the landscape here.

According to legend, Bárður was a half-human, half-ogre who settled in the area and became known for his wisdom and strength. He is said to have disappeared into the Snæfellsjökull glacier, where he continues to watch over the peninsula. The statue serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted connection between the Icelandic people and their land, a connection that is palpable even to a newcomer like me.

Kirkjufell Knitting

Since I enjoy knitting, I couldn't resist stopping at Kirkjufell Knitting in Grundarfjörður. This charming shop is a treasure trove of handcrafted wool products, from cozy sweaters to intricate scarves and hats. The vibrant colors and traditional patterns were simply irresistible. I ended up buying a beautiful Lopapeysa sweater for myself, a perfect reminder of our Icelandic adventure. Aino picked out a cute knitted hat, and Markus even found a warm scarf he liked. The owners were incredibly friendly and shared stories about their knitting techniques and the significance of each design. It was a truly immersive cultural experience.

I’ve always found solace and creativity in knitting, a hobby passed down from my Alaskan grandmother. The rhythmic clicking of the needles, the soft texture of the wool, and the satisfaction of creating something beautiful and functional – it’s all incredibly therapeutic. And what better way to embrace the Icelandic culture than by indulging in its rich knitting tradition?

Dinner at Stapinn

For dinner, we chose Stapinn, a local restaurant known for its fresh seafood and traditional Icelandic dishes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with rustic décor and friendly staff. We started with a delicious seafood soup, followed by grilled cod and lamb chops. Everything was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were simply divine. Aino especially enjoyed the homemade bread, which she devoured with gusto. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Snæfellsnes.

As we settled into our campsite for the night, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula has already captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, rich folklore, and warm hospitality. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings as we plan to visit Gerðuberg Cliffs, Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge, and Vatnshellir Cave. I can't wait to explore more of this magical place and share our adventures with you all. Markus is already looking up information about the Gerðuberg cliffs, excited about the geology, and Aino is thrilled about the cave exploration. I'm looking forward to stopping by Ullarselið - Wool Centre tomorrow to see if I can pick up some more yarn, too!
