A Day of Discovery in Mols Bjerge
Today was a day of embracing the natural beauty and historical significance of Mols Bjerge National Park. With my friends, I set out to explore Hyllested Bjerge and Egsmark Plantage, two locations that promised a blend of scenic trails and intriguing stories. The Danish countryside in May is simply breathtaking, and I was eager to immerse myself in it.
Hyllested Bjerge: Experience breathtaking views and serene nature trails in the heart of Denmark's stunning landscape.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Mols Bjerge. It was a delightful experience. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. The food was delicious, offering a perfect start to our day of exploration. I savored a traditional Danish breakfast, complete with freshly baked bread, local cheeses, and a strong cup of coffee. It reminded me of similar breakfasts back in Alaska, where simple, hearty meals are a staple.

After breakfast, we drove to Hyllested Bjerge. The rolling hills and lush woodlands were a sight to behold. We chose a hiking trail that wound through the area, allowing us to fully appreciate the landscape. The trail was well-maintained, making it easy to navigate. As we walked, we were surrounded by the sounds of nature – birds singing, leaves rustling, and the gentle breeze whispering through the trees. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city air of Helsinki.
The views from the higher points of Hyllested Bjerge were stunning. We could see for miles in every direction, taking in the vast expanse of the national park. The landscape was dotted with grazing animals, adding to the idyllic scene. It was a perfect opportunity to take some photographs, capturing the beauty of the Danish countryside. I made sure to take extra photos for Aino, as I know she would love to see the animals and the open landscapes. She has such a keen eye for nature, much like her Alaskan grandmother.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
Next on our itinerary was Egsmark Plantage, a site with a fascinating history. This plantation was established in 1929 by the Djurslands Plantningsforening to demonstrate the importance of afforestation. As we walked through the plantation, we saw various species of trees, each marked with informative signs. It was like taking a step back in time, learning about the efforts to cultivate the land and create a thriving forest.

The trails in Egsmark Plantage led us to a vista point that offered a surprise view. From here, we could see the coastal cliffs, remnants of a time when the sea level was much higher. It was a stark reminder of the ever-changing nature of the landscape. We also caught a glimpse of Stubbe Sø, a serene lake that added to the beauty of the area. The history of Egsmark Plantage is deeply connected to the spirit of reclaiming and cultivating the land, a sentiment that resonates with my own Alaskan upbringing.
For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Moment. The reviews I had read praised its innovative cuisine and cozy ambiance. We enjoyed a delightful meal, savoring the flavors of the region. The restaurant's commitment to local ingredients was evident in every dish. It was a culinary experience that perfectly complemented our day of exploration.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to stop by Labacate Café for a refreshing drink. This charming café offered a selection of beverages and snacks. It was the perfect spot to relax and reflect on our day. The café had a laid-back vibe, and we enjoyed chatting with the locals, learning more about the area and its culture. Sipping coffee at Labacate Café, I felt a sense of connection to the community, a feeling I always cherish when traveling.

For dinner, we had made reservations at Molskroen, a restaurant renowned for its gourmet cuisine and stunning location. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a culinary experience that was both refined and satisfying. The dishes were prepared with meticulous attention to detail, showcasing the best of Danish gastronomy. The ambiance was elegant, yet relaxed, making it a perfect end to our day.

Molskroen's commitment to sustainability was also impressive. They work closely with local farmers and prioritize the well-being of their staff. It's inspiring to see a restaurant that not only offers exceptional food but also operates with a strong sense of social and environmental responsibility. It reminded me of the growing emphasis on sustainable practices in Finland, where businesses are increasingly prioritizing ethical and eco-friendly operations.
Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore Mols Bjerge National Park. The combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and culinary delights made it a truly memorable experience. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to Jagtslottet, Kalø and Glasmuseet Ebeltoft. I'm particularly excited about visiting Jagtslottet, Kalø as it is a medieval castle ruin.
Tomorrow, we plan to have breakfast at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols, lunch at MolsCafeen, and dinner at Molskroen Strandhotel og Molskroens Brasserie. We will also be stopping by Molslaboratoriet, Naturhistorisk Museum, which I am sure Aino would love, given her inquisitive mind.
I am also grateful for the company of my friends, who made the day even more enjoyable. Traveling with friends adds a special dimension to any adventure, creating memories that will last a lifetime. These shared experiences are what make travel so rewarding. Markus would have loved this trip, I will make sure to bring him next time!
As I write this, I am filled with anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. Mols Bjerge National Park has captured my heart, and I am eager to continue exploring its hidden gems.
I am also grateful that I remembered to pack my hiking boots, camera, camping gear and reusable water bottle. However, I am slightly kicking myself for forgetting the sunscreen and portable phone charger. Hopefully I will remember next time!
Until tomorrow,
Jennifer
