A Fond Farewell

As our Snæfellsnes adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey Maximilian and I have shared. Today was about savoring the last moments, embracing the tranquility of this magical peninsula, and indulging in the local flavors that have defined our Icelandic experience. It’s hard to believe our time here is almost over, but I’m determined to make the most of every last second.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arnarstapi Center and Snjófell Restaurant. The cozy atmosphere and stunning views of Mount Stapafell set the perfect tone for our final day. I opted for a traditional Icelandic breakfast, while Maximilian enjoyed a stack of pancakes. Sipping our coffee, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the past week, from hiking to the top of volcanic craters to marveling at the black sand beaches. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home as we planned our day.

After breakfast, we decided to revisit Snæfellsnes one last time. We drove along the coastal roads, stopping at various viewpoints to capture the breathtaking scenery. The September air was crisp and clean, and the autumn colors were just beginning to paint the landscape in hues of gold and red. I felt a sense of peace wash over me as I watched the waves crash against the shore, knowing that this was a moment I would cherish forever.

The journey may be ending, but the memories will last a lifetime.

Our next stop was Lýsuhóll, a place known for its unique geothermal algae bath and horse farm. While we didn't take a dip in the algae bath this time, we did spend some time exploring the horse farm. The Icelandic horses were beautiful and friendly. I’ve always felt a special connection to animals, and it was heartwarming to see these gentle creatures roaming freely in their natural habitat. We considered taking a short riding tour along the beach, but decided to simply enjoy their company for a while.

For lunch, we headed to Agnið Streetfood in Stykkishólmur. This food truck is renowned for its fresh seafood and vibrant atmosphere. Maximilian and I shared some delicious fish tacos made with fish cheeks. The tacos were bursting with flavor, and the service was quick and friendly. It was the perfect way to refuel before continuing our adventure.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through the charming village of Stykkishólmur. We explored the colorful houses, visited the local shops, and soaked in the laid-back atmosphere. It felt like stepping back in time, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this authentic Icelandic culture.

For our final dinner in Snaefellsnes, we chose Stapinn in Arnarstapi, a family-run restaurant known for its traditional Icelandic cuisine. The cozy ambiance and friendly staff made us feel incredibly welcome. I ordered the lamb soup, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. Maximilian opted for the fish and chips, which he declared were the best he’d ever had. We savored every bite, knowing that this was our last taste of Snaefellsnes for now.

As the sun began to set, we decided to make one last stop at Saltkjallarinn bar. This charming bar is located on the island of Flatey, which required a short ferry ride from Stykkishólmur. The bar had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with rustic decor and warm lighting. We ordered some local Icelandic craft beers and sat by the window, watching the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors.

Reflecting on our time in Snaefellsnes, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the experiences we’ve shared. From the dramatic landscapes to the charming villages, this peninsula has captured my heart in a way I never expected. Traveling with Maximilian has made this trip even more special, as we’ve been able to share these incredible moments together.

I know that our adventures in Iceland are far from over. Tomorrow, we’ll be heading back to Reykjavik to catch our flight back to Berlin. While I’m excited to return home, I’m also sad to say goodbye to this magical island. But I know that I’ll carry the memories of Snaefellsnes with me always.

As I sit here writing this blog post, I can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. I set out on this journey with the goal of exploring the untamed beauty of Snaefellsnes, and I can confidently say that I’ve achieved that goal. I’ve pushed myself outside of my comfort zone, embraced new experiences, and discovered a newfound appreciation for the natural world.

And as I look ahead to future adventures, I know that this trip to Snaefellsnes will serve as a constant source of inspiration. It’s a reminder that the world is full of incredible places waiting to be explored, and that with a little bit of courage and curiosity, anything is possible.

So, farewell Snaefellsnes. Thank you for the memories, the lessons, and the inspiration. I’ll never forget you.

I am already looking forward to planning our next adventure!

Safe travels,
Jennifer
