Iceland's Fiery Heart and Stone-Cold Beauty

Day two on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula brought a symphony of natural wonders and gastronomic pleasures. Leaving behind the cozy comforts of our hotel, Maximilian and I set out to explore the volcanic landscapes and dramatic coastlines that define this captivating region. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and delightful tastes, a true immersion into the heart of Iceland.

Our first stop was the Eldborg Crater Trailhead. The crisp morning air invigorated us as we began our hike toward Eldborg Crater. The trail, about 6 kilometers round trip, wound through a lava field, a stark reminder of Iceland's volcanic past. Despite being classified as an easy hike, the rocky terrain demanded attention, a mix of smooth footpaths and rugged stretches. I was grateful for my trusty hiking boots, especially as we encountered a few muddy patches along the way.

As we ascended, the landscape transformed. The panoramic views from the crater's rim were breathtaking. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula stretched out before us, a tapestry of mountains and lava fields. I could see other smaller craters dotting the horizon, remnants of ancient eruptions. Maximilian, ever the enthusiastic photographer, captured the stunning vista, his camera clicking away as he framed the perfect shot. I felt a surge of accomplishment as I reached the top. It was a steep climb, and I was definitely feeling the burn, but the view was worth every step.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are those that require a little effort, a little sweat, and a whole lot of determination.

After descending from Eldborg, we drove towards Gerðuberg Cliffs, eager to witness another of Iceland's geological marvels. The Gerðuberg basalt columns are truly a sight to behold. Stretching for about half a kilometer, these hexagonal basalt columns form a natural fortress, a testament to the power and artistry of nature.

The columns, ranging from 1 to 1.5 meters wide and up to 14 meters high, looked as if they had been carved by hand. I learned that these formations were created thousands of years ago when basaltic lava flowed and cooled rapidly in even streams, a process called columnar jointing. The geometric symmetry was astounding, a perfect example of nature's inherent artistry. Maximilian and I walked along the base of the cliffs, marveling at the sheer scale and precision of the columns. It was hard to believe that such a structure could be formed by natural processes.

For lunch, we stopped at Samkomuhúsið Arnarstapa, a charming restaurant in the village of Arnarstapi. The restaurant is housed in the old community center, giving it a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I opted for the vegan vegetable soup, a warm and comforting choice on this breezy day. Maximilian chose a traditional Icelandic dish, eager to immerse himself in the local cuisine. My soup was delicious, served with homemade bread and olive oil. It was the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventures. Maximilian enjoyed his meal, savoring the flavors of Iceland. We chatted with the friendly staff, learning about the history of the community center and the local area.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Bjargarsteinn Mathús in Grundarfjörður for dinner. This restaurant is known for its local fine dining and daily changing menu. The setting was idyllic, with the restaurant perched by the sea, offering stunning views of the coastline. I contacted the restaurant in advance, and the chef was happy to prepare a vegan dish for me. The meal was exquisite, a testament to the chef's culinary creativity. Maximilian thoroughly enjoyed his fish dish, praising the freshness and flavor.

To cap off our day, we decided to visit Hverinn - Restaurant & Bar for a nightcap. Located in Kleppjárnsreykir, this spot was recommended as a great place to unwind. The bar had a curated selection of local beers and wines, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. Maximilian enjoyed a local craft beer, while I opted for a glass of wine. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, a perfect end to a day of adventure.

Before heading back to the hotel, we made a pact to try and visit the Snæfellsnes Peninsula again soon, perhaps even during the Iceland Eclipse Festival taking place in August of 2026.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint and see the Bárður Snæfellsás Statue. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula's dramatic coastline and learning more about its rich history and folklore. We'll also be stopping by Álfar og Tröll ehf, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the raw beauty and culinary delights of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It's a place that ignites the senses and nourishes the soul, a true gem in the heart of Iceland. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share my experiences with all of you.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that the Hótel Snaefellsnes, where we had breakfast, offered a fantastic breakfast with amazing baked goods!
