A Day of Ducks and Discoveries

Today was all about embracing the unexpected and diving headfirst into the quirky side of Phong Nha. After a delightful vegan breakfast, we set out to explore the countryside, and what we found was a blend of laughter, tranquility, and a healthy dose of rural Vietnamese charm. It’s days like these that remind me why I love traveling with friends – the shared experiences and spontaneous adventures are simply priceless.

Our day began at the Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant, a charming spot overlooking the river. I savored a delicious bowl of pho, packed with fresh herbs and flavorful broth, while my friends opted for the lemongrass chili mushrooms. Fueled up and ready for adventure, we hopped on our motorbikes and set off towards our first destination: The Duck Stop.

The ride itself was an experience, winding through lush green rice paddies and past traditional Vietnamese houses. It reminded me of cycling through the small towns of Missouri as a child, but with a distinctly Vietnamese twist. The air was fresh, and the scenery was stunning – a perfect start to the day.

As we arrived at The Duck Stop, I couldn’t help but grin. This place is truly unique. Tran Van Quynh, a young and inventive farmer, transformed his family farm into an interactive attraction. We were greeted by a flurry of activity – ducks waddling everywhere, the sounds of laughter, and the aroma of Vietnamese pancakes.

We eagerly joined in the fun, purchasing bags of feed and becoming “duck leaders” for a brief but hilarious moment. Watching over 120 ducks follow our every move was both chaotic and incredibly entertaining. The highlight, without a doubt, was the duck massage. I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant at first, but the ticklish sensation of the ducks nibbling at our hands and feet was strangely relaxing. My friends and I were in stitches, and it was the perfect icebreaker to start the day.

Of course, no visit to The Duck Stop is complete without trying their famous bánh xèo. We devoured the crispy pancakes filled with pork and shrimp, savoring every bite. It was the perfect blend of savory and sweet, and a delicious taste of local cuisine. As someone who enjoys baking traditional German Kuchen for my family back in Berlin, I always appreciate experiencing local culinary traditions.

After bidding farewell to our feathered friends, we continued our journey to Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure. This sanctuary, part of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang Conservation Project, aims to rehabilitate animals before releasing them back into the wild. The enclosure spans 18 hectares and is home to several primate species, including the rare Ha Tinh langur.

The area was set up in 2007 in order to help animals regain their natural instincts before being released into the wild. It is also aimed to be the place for scientific research and environmental education about wild animal preservation, particularly endangered rare species. Through this area, everyone gets provided with basic information on the care, rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals before releasing them back into the wild. There is also a chance to observe and learn about the ecology of more than 20 individuals of Ha Tinh langur, a rare and endangered species that is a priority for protection and is the symbol of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park.

We spent a peaceful afternoon wandering along the loop trail that surrounds the enclosure. The landscape was beautiful, with rugged limestone karsts and lush vegetation. Although we didn’t spot any primates, the tranquility of the area was reward enough. It was a welcome contrast to the lively atmosphere of The Duck Stop, and a chance to connect with nature.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Phong Nha, stopping for a late lunch at ARTIST'S ZONE. This cozy restaurant is known for its delicious Vietnamese dishes and friendly staff. I enjoyed a flavorful chicken salad, while my friends opted for the spring rolls and sandwiches. The affordable beer was an added bonus, and we savored the opportunity to relax and reflect on our day’s adventures.

For dinner, we decided to try Lantern Vietnamese Restaurant. This restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, run by a local couple with much experience in the food industry. I opted for mushroom and tofu clay pot with rice, which the lady said she will make without fish sauce, remembering I was vegan for the night before. My friends enjoyed traditional Vietnamese dishes with meat.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Dubai Pub Phong Nha. I was curious, how the pub got a name of a city so far away. This bar is known for its vibrant atmosphere and blend of local and international flair. We sipped on local Vietnamese beers, listened to live music, and shared stories with fellow travelers. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration and embrace the social side of traveling.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to delve deeper into the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, exploring more of its natural wonders. I’m particularly excited to visit some of the famous caves and experience the unique beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage site. We'll start the day with breakfast at The Villas Restaurant and then head out for a day of adventure. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Lá Store - Cho thuê đồ Boho/Vintage Phong Nha - Quảng Bình. I’ve always loved incorporating vintage pieces into my wardrobe, and it would be a great way to remember our time in Phong Nha.

As I drift off to sleep, I’m filled with gratitude for the experiences of today. From the quirky charm of The Duck Stop to the tranquil beauty of Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure and the lively atmosphere of Dubai Pub, today was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. It’s these moments that make traveling so rewarding, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
