Lisbon's Echoes: Palaces, History, and Modern Delights

Today, I dove headfirst into the vibrant tapestry of Lisbon, a city that effortlessly blends its rich historical past with the conveniences and excitements of modern life. From the regal halls of Belém Palace to the captivating exhibits at the Museum of Lisbon – Pimenta Palace, and finally, a touch of retail therapy at El Corte Inglés, it was a day of contrasts, discoveries, and delightful surprises.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Pic Nic I. While the name might suggest a casual outdoor meal, this place offered a cozy start to our Lisbon adventure. After fueling up, we set off to explore the Palácio Nacional de Belém, the official residence of the Portuguese President. The palace itself is an impressive structure, steeped in history and exuding an air of quiet dignity. Though we couldn't go inside, the exterior was stunning, and the gardens offered a tranquil escape with beautiful views overlooking the Tagus River. I imagined Queen Maria II and King Carlos strolling through those very gardens, contemplating the future of Portugal.

We wandered through the formal gardens, admiring the meticulously manicured lawns and vibrant flowerbeds. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the guards standing stoically at their posts, their uniforms impeccable and their presence adding to the regal atmosphere. It was a moment that transported us back in time, allowing us to glimpse the grandeur of Portugal's past.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing the layers of history and culture that make each destination unique.

Next on our itinerary was the Museum of Lisbon – Pimenta Palace. Housed in an 18th-century summer house, this museum offered a fascinating journey through the city's evolution, from its Roman origins to the present day. The collection of paintings, ceramics, and archaeological finds painted a vivid picture of Lisbon's urban, social, and economic development. Sophie was particularly captivated by a scale model of Lisbon before the devastating 1755 earthquake, a poignant reminder of the city's resilience and enduring spirit. Hans, ever the engineer, was impressed by the intricate details of the model and the way it brought history to life.

The Pimenta Palace itself is a beautiful building, with its Baroque architecture and tranquil gardens. We strolled through the Bordallo Pinheiro Garden, admiring the whimsical ceramic creations and the peacocks that roamed freely among the green spaces. It was a delightful contrast to the more formal atmosphere of Belém Palace, offering a glimpse into the lighter side of Lisbon's history.

For lunch, we ventured to Bar do Fundo, a restaurant recommended by a local we met at the museum. Located in Sintra, it offered a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. The cozy, relaxed atmosphere and ecological-style wooden house perfectly complemented the beachy vibe. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and we savored every bite while watching the waves crash against the shore. Sophie, surprisingly, devoured the grilled octopus, declaring it the best she'd ever had. Hans and I shared a bottle of local wine, toasting to the beauty of Portugal and the joy of family travel.

After our delightful lunch, it was time for a bit of retail therapy at El Corte Inglés Lisboa. This massive department store offered a vast array of products, from high-fashion brands to local crafts. Sophie was thrilled to browse the toy section, while I indulged in some window shopping, admiring the latest collections from renowned Portuguese designers. Hans, ever practical, picked up a new travel adapter, a much-needed replacement for the one we'd forgotten back in Berlin.

El Corte Inglés was more than just a shopping destination; it was a cultural experience in itself. The store buzzed with activity, showcasing the energy and vibrancy of modern Lisbon. We enjoyed a coffee at one of the in-house cafes, watching the locals go about their daily lives and soaking in the cosmopolitan atmosphere.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Monserrate for dinner. The restaurant itself was an experience, with a menu that highlighted local flavors and ingredients. The ambiance was elegant yet welcoming, and the service was impeccable. We savored each course, reflecting on the day's adventures and planning our itinerary for tomorrow.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Jardim Zoológico and the Lisbon Cathedral. We also plan to visit the Feira da Ladra to find some antiques.

I must admit that I am still a little frustrated that I forgot to pack a raincoat and a portable charger for my phone. I am hoping that I can find them tomorrow when we visit the Feira da Ladra.

Today was a perfect example of what I love most about travel: the opportunity to immerse myself in a new culture, to discover hidden gems, and to create lasting memories with my family. Lisbon, with its blend of history, culture, and modern delights, has captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Reflecting on the day, I realize how much Lisbon has to offer. It's a city that rewards exploration, that invites you to wander its streets and discover its secrets. Each corner holds a story, each building a memory. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this enchanting city with my loved ones.

It's funny how travel can sometimes feel like piecing together a puzzle. You start with a vague idea, a few landmarks on your list, and then, as you explore, the pieces start to fall into place. You discover hidden connections, unexpected delights, and a deeper understanding of the place and its people. And in the end, you're left with a complete picture, a beautiful mosaic of experiences that will stay with you long after you've returned home.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm reminded of a quote from one of my favorite travel writers:

To travel is to live.

And today, in Lisbon, I truly felt alive. I look forward to tomorrow's adventures, with the hope of even more unexpected discoveries and memorable moments.

I also want to mention that Lisbon is hosting the Biosensors 2025 – 35th Anniversary World Congress on Biosensors which is taking place today. I am sure that Hans would have loved to attend that conference, but maybe next time.

Finally, I am looking forward to experiencing Sintra, which everyone has recommended I visit. I might try to visit the Monserrate Palace, which is supposed to be beautiful.
