Exploring the Depths and Heights of Jotunheimen

Today was a day of contrasts, venturing into the depths of the earth and then soaking in the expansive views that Jotunheimen National Park has to offer. It's amazing how much variety this region holds, from hidden geological wonders to stunning artistic installations. I was eager to see what today would bring, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Steaks & Bones - Huset. I opted for a classic Norwegian breakfast of smoked salmon and eggs, while Markus enjoyed a more traditional American-style breakfast with bacon and pancakes. Aino, of course, chose the waffles with berries and cream. It's become a tradition on our travels for each of us to pick something that represents the local cuisine and something that reminds us of home. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration.

After breakfast, we set off to find The Hand in Skjolden. The drive itself was breathtaking, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the fjords and mountains. The Hand is a remarkable sculpture that seems to reach out and touch the sky, symbolizing the connection between humanity and nature. Aino was immediately captivated, running around the sculpture and taking photos from every angle. Markus and I took our time, admiring the artistry and the stunning backdrop. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a place where the beauty of art and nature intertwine.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the unexpected detours and hidden corners of the world.

Next on our itinerary was Dumdalen Grotten, a series of limestone caves formed during the last ice age. The drive to the caves took us through a lush and beautiful valley, teeming with wildflowers and unique flora. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a local guide who provided us with helmets and headlamps. Aino was thrilled, eager to explore the depths of the earth. The caves themselves were a marvel, with intricate rock formations, narrow passages, and hidden chambers. We crawled through tight spaces, marveling at the natural artistry carved by water over thousands of years. It was a truly immersive experience, one that transported us to another world.

I must admit, I was a bit nervous navigating the slippery rocks and tight spaces, but Aino's enthusiasm was contagious. She fearlessly led the way, pointing out interesting formations and sharing her imaginative interpretations of the cave's features. Markus, ever the supportive husband, stayed close to me, offering a steady hand and a reassuring smile. It's moments like these that remind me how lucky I am to have such wonderful travel companions.

After our subterranean adventure, we were ready for a late lunch. We stopped at Skeistua, a family restaurant known for its local cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic charm, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Norwegian dishes. I opted for the reindeer stew, a hearty and flavorful dish that warmed me from the inside out. Markus tried the local trout, while Aino, predictably, ordered the waffles again. It seems she can't get enough of Norwegian waffles!

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing evening. We made a pit stop at Pøbben, a local bar known for its friendly atmosphere. While Markus sampled some local beer, Aino enjoyed a soda, and I savored a glass of wine. We chatted with some locals, learning more about the history and culture of the region. It's always fascinating to hear stories and perspectives from the people who call this place home.

For dinner, we chose Bryggjehuset Kafe & Pub in Skjolden. The pub offered stunning views of the fjord, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. We ordered a mix of dishes, including pizza and some traditional Norwegian fare. The food was good, although some reviews mention the pizza quality can be hit or miss. But the view and the company more than made up for any shortcomings. As the sun set over the fjord, casting a golden glow on the water, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the incredible diversity of experiences that Jotunheimen National Park offers. From the depths of the Dumdalen Grotten to the heights of The Hand, and from the cozy warmth of Steaks & Bones - Huset to the lively atmosphere of Bryggjehuset Kafe & Pub, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Bitihorn and Videfossen. Bitihorn is a distinctive mountain known for its unique shape and stunning views, and Videfossen is a beautiful waterfall cascading down the mountainside. We'll also be stopping by Hansen & Dysvik Lom, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs. I'm particularly excited to see what traditional crafts and textiles they have on offer. Knowing Aino, she'll probably find something quirky and unique to add to her collection. I'm also looking forward to trying breakfast at Hindsæter, lunch at Jotunstogo AS, and dinner at Herangtunet Boutique Hotel Norway. I've heard great things about their local cuisine, and I'm always eager to try new flavors and culinary experiences. I am looking forward to another day of exploration and adventure in this beautiful corner of Norway.

It's amazing how much this trip has already enriched our lives, creating memories that we will cherish for years to come. As we prepare for the final days of our adventure, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead.
