Waterfalls and Wisdom in Jotunheimen

Today was a day of embracing the raw power of nature and diving deeper into the heart of Norwegian culture. We ventured to see one of Norway's tallest waterfalls and explored the stories that shape this incredible region. It's days like these that remind me why I love sharing these adventures with my family and with you all.

Our day began, as many do on this trip, with a hearty breakfast. We fueled up at Jotunstogo AS in Beitostølen. I had read some mixed reviews, but we found it charming, with large portions and a cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect start before our drive to Årdal, where our main adventure for the day awaited: Vettisfossen waterfall.

The drive itself was stunning, winding through the valleys and alongside rivers, the landscape growing more dramatic with every turn. Aino was particularly excited, her nose practically glued to the window as she peppered Markus and me with questions about the mountains and the folklore surrounding them. I tried my best to answer, drawing from my librarian's knowledge and my own fascination with Nordic mythology. It's moments like these, sharing my passions with my family, that make these trips so special.

Arriving at the trailhead for Vettisfossen, we geared up for what I knew would be a moderately challenging hike. The weather was perfect, a crisp, clear August day, ideal for exploring the Utladalen valley. The hike to Vettisfossen is described as moderate to demanding, taking approximately 2-3 hours. The path was well-maintained, but definitely required sturdy hiking boots, which thankfully we had remembered to pack!.

The trail meandered through lush greenery, with the sound of rushing water accompanying us almost the entire way. We passed smaller waterfalls along the way, each one a miniature spectacle in its own right. Aino, ever the curious explorer, insisted on stopping at each one, wanting to take photos and examine the plant life growing nearby. Markus, with his software engineer's mind, was fascinated by the engineering of the bridges and pathways that allowed us to navigate the sometimes-steep terrain.

As we approached Vettisfossen, the air grew cooler, and the roar of the water intensified. Finally, we rounded a bend, and there it was: Vettisfossen in all its glory. The waterfall plunges 275 meters (about 900 feet), making it the highest unregulated waterfall in Norway. The sight was simply breathtaking. The sheer power of the water, the mist rising from the base, the way the sunlight caught the droplets in the air – it was a scene that truly captured the wild beauty of Norway. We spent a good hour simply taking it all in, snapping photos, and feeling the spray on our faces. It was worth every step of the hike.

Once the queen gets to you, she will never leave your heart.

After our fill of Vettisfossen's majesty, we began our descent, the return journey offering a different perspective on the stunning landscape. By the time we reached the car, we were all happily tired, our legs aching but our spirits soaring.

Next on our agenda was the Norwegian Fjellcenter in Lom. I was eager to learn more about the region's history, geology, and, of course, its folklore. The Fjellcenter serves as a visitor center for the national parks of Jotunheimen, Reinheimen, and Breheimen. It's a fantastic resource for anyone wanting to explore the area, offering maps, information on hiking trails, and exhibits on the local flora and fauna.

The exhibits were fascinating, detailing the formation of the mountains, the unique ecosystem that thrives here, and the stories that have been passed down through generations. Aino was particularly captivated by the displays on Norse mythology, especially the tales of giants and trolls said to inhabit the mountains. It sparked a lively discussion about the connection between the landscape and the myths that have sprung from it. I think it’s important to pass on the Norse Mythology to Aino since it is something that I'm very passionate about.

I was intrigued by the exhibit featuring archaeological finds from the ice, including artifacts thousands of years old. It really brought home the idea of how much history is preserved in these mountains. It's amazing to think about how people have lived and traveled in this area for centuries.

Before leaving Lom, we made a stop at Smak i Lom, a local food store. I wanted to pick up some local delicacies to enjoy later at our campsite. The store was a treasure trove of handmade cheeses, cured meats, and other regional specialties. I couldn't resist buying some reindeer sausage and a selection of local cheeses, along with some cloudberry jam, a true taste of Norway. Smak i Lom also offers lunch and coffee, with a terrace that has a view of the waterfall and stave church.

For lunch, we decided to try BrimiBue in Lom. It’s known for modern takes on traditional food, using local ingredients. We enjoyed a simple but delicious meal. I had a creamy fish soup while Markus tried a shrimp sandwich. Aino, of course, opted for something simpler, but she enjoyed the homemade vanilla parfait with Norwegian berries.

As evening approached, we drove to our campsite, eager to set up our tent and relax after a day of hiking and exploring. For dinner, we chose Hindsæter. The reviews mentioned local, ecological produce and traditional ingredients, which aligned perfectly with our desire for an authentic Norwegian dining experience.

As I sit here now, writing in my journal by the warm glow of our camping lantern, I can't help but feel grateful for experiences like these. Jotunheimen is truly a magical place, a land of stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Sharing it with my family makes it all the more special. We're all looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to hike Hulderstigen and visit the Lom Bygdamuseum. It promises to be another day of adventure and discovery in this incredible corner of the world. I'm especially excited about Hulderstigen, since it has a connection to Nordic folklore.

As we prepare for another day of adventures, I am reminded of something Jan Schwarzott wrote:

Once the queen gets to you, she will never leave your heart.

And I feel that Jotunheimen is working its magic on us all.
