Embark on a family journey through Jotunheimen National Park, hiking to Galdhøpiggen and immersing in Nordic myths amidst stunning landscapes.
Home of the Giants: Day One in Jotunheimen
Today marked the beginning of our family's grand adventure in Jotunheimen National Park, a place where the veil between reality and Nordic folklore feels incredibly thin. After months of planning and anticipation, we finally set foot on the land of giants, ready to explore its dramatic landscapes and immerse ourselves in its rich cultural history. It's a journey I've been longing to take, eager to share the magic of this place with Markus and Aino.

Our day began with an early start in Helsinki. The drive to Jotunheimen was long but scenic, giving us a taste of the Norwegian countryside. As we approached the park, the landscape transformed into a dramatic tableau of towering peaks and verdant valleys. The air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth, a welcome change from the city. It felt like stepping into another world, a world where trolls and mythical creatures might still roam.
In Jotunheimen, nature whispers tales of giants and gods, inviting you to become a part of its timeless saga.
Our first stop was at Jotunheimen Fjellstue for breakfast. The mountain inn was nestled in the Bøverdalen valley, offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The breakfast was hearty and traditional, fueling us up for the day's adventures. Aino was particularly excited about trying the local cheeses and breads, while Markus enjoyed a strong cup of coffee, fortifying himself for the hiking ahead. I appreciated the cozy atmosphere of the inn, a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. I made a mental note to try and replicate the delicious brown cheese back home in Helsinki; it would be a perfect reminder of our trip.

After breakfast, we embarked on our first hike in Jotunheimen National Park. The plan was to explore some of the easier trails and acclimatize to the altitude. The park is vast, covering roughly 3,500 square kilometers, so we knew we could only scratch the surface on this trip. The trails were well-marked, but the terrain was rocky and uneven in places, requiring sturdy hiking boots and a good sense of balance. As we walked, I couldn't help but imagine the giants of Norse mythology making these mountains their home.
Our main goal for the day was to visit Galdhøpiggen, the highest peak in Norway. While we didn't ascend to the summit today, we wanted to get a closer look and plan our ascent for a later day. We drove as far as we could towards Spiterstulen, the lodge that serves as a popular starting point for the Galdhøpiggen hike. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads and breathtaking vistas at every turn. We parked at Spiterstulen, soaking in the views. The weather in Jotunheimen in August can be unpredictable, and today was no exception. The sun played hide-and-seek behind the clouds, casting dramatic shadows across the landscape. I was glad I had packed layers, as the temperature fluctuated with the shifting sunlight.

For lunch, we stopped at Gjendeosen Kiosk. This charming café is perfectly situated for mountain wanderers, offering hearty meals and delightful flavors. We savored the local specialties, including tender elk burgers and freshly baked cinnamon buns. Aino was delighted with her waffle, while Markus and I enjoyed the robust coffee, which provided a much-needed boost. The kiosk also offers a Besseggen packed lunch, which is a fresh pack with assorted toppings, local food and fruit.

After lunch, we visited Fossheim Steinsenter, a captivating museum and shop in Lom. As a librarian with a passion for Nordic culture, I was eager to explore this treasure trove of minerals, crystals, and Norwegian artistry. The center boasts Norway's largest collection of minerals and semi-precious stones, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region's geological history. Aino was particularly fascinated by the sparkling crystals, while Markus admired the intricate stone carvings. I picked up a small piece of thulite, a pink zoisite mineral unique to Norway, as a memento of our visit. The shop also showcased traditional Norwegian crafts, providing a perfect opportunity to support local artisans.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Bessheim Fjellstue og Hytter, our accommodation for the night. This mountain lodge overlooks Lake Øvre Sjodalsvatnet, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The lodge exudes a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, making it the perfect place to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring.

Dinner at Bessheim Fjellstue was a delightful experience. The in-house restaurant served traditional Norwegian cuisine, with a focus on local ingredients. We savored dishes such as reindeer stew and mountain trout, each bite bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, with friendly staff eager to share stories and recommendations about the area. Aino even tried reindeer meat for the first time, declaring it surprisingly delicious.
After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll around the lodge, enjoying the tranquility of the evening. The stars twinkled above us, and the only sound was the gentle lapping of the lake against the shore. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a moment of peace and connection with nature that I will cherish forever.
Tomorrow, we plan to hike Besseggen, a challenging but rewarding trail that offers breathtaking views of two contrasting lakes. I've heard tales of its narrow ridges and steep ascents, and I'm both excited and a little apprehensive. But I know that with Markus and Aino by my side, we can conquer any challenge that comes our way. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what other adventures await us in the land of giants. Will we encounter trolls or glimpse the mythical creatures of Norse legend? Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure: Jotunheimen has already cast its spell on us, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
