Finding Inspiration on the Road Less Traveled

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to absorb the quieter wonders of Jotunheimen. It wasn't about conquering peaks or chasing adrenaline, but about letting the landscape seep into our souls. We embraced the invitation to slow down, to notice the subtle shifts in scenery, and to find inspiration in the most unexpected corners of this majestic park.

The day began, as many good days do, with the promise of fresh pastries and strong coffee. We headed to Bakeriet i Lom uteservering for breakfast. The aroma of freshly baked bread alone was enough to draw us in, but the sight of those famous cinnamon buns sealed the deal. Aino, of course, was in pastry heaven, while Markus and I savored the rich coffee and planned our route for the day. It’s funny how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day, isn’t it? I always feel that a local bakery gives you an authentic glimpse into the heart of a place. The warmth of the oven, the chatter of locals, it’s a comforting ritual that I cherish wherever we go.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore Jotunheimvegen. I had read about this toll road, a 45-kilometer stretch of gravel that winds through the mountains, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. The road was built in the 1950s to replace a milk boat service that operated across Sandvatnet and Vinstri. As we drove, the landscape slowly unfolded before us. The towering peaks gave way to rolling hills, and the dense forests opened up to reveal vast plateaus. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. We even spotted a herd of reindeer grazing in the distance ! Markus, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping photos at every turn. Aino, surprisingly, put away her devices and gazed out the window, captivated by the scenery. It’s moments like these, when technology takes a backseat to nature, that make me happiest as a mother. Seeing her connect with the world around her, appreciating its beauty, is a gift.

The Jotunheimvegen itself is a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance. Built in the 1950s, it replaced a milk boat service that had become obsolete due to hydroelectric development. The road's early construction involved laying birch branches across boggy areas to prevent vehicles from sinking, a costly but necessary measure. Today, the road is maintained by toll income, and it remains a vital artery for accessing this part of Jotunheimen. As we drove, I couldn't help but marvel at the effort it must have taken to carve this path through such rugged terrain. The road is only open in the summer, typically from late June until the snow returns, making it a seasonal treasure.

For lunch, we stopped at Lodge 900 in Beitostølen. Perched with stunning views of the mountains, it was the perfect spot to refuel and recharge. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, and the menu features traditional Norwegian dishes with a modern twist. Markus opted for a hearty reindeer stew, while Aino, predictably, chose pizza. I decided to try the local fish, which was cooked to perfection. The cozy interior and attentive staff made it a truly enjoyable experience.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in the simple act of being present in a beautiful place.

After lunch, we continued our journey to the Poem Ladder of Jan Magnus Bruheim. I had read about this unique attraction, a ladder adorned with fragments of Bruheim's poetry, and I was intrigued. Bruheim was a Norwegian poet and children's writer, known for his evocative verses and connection to nature. As we approached the ladder, I could feel a sense of anticipation building. The ladder itself was a work of art, blending seamlessly into the landscape. Each step featured a different fragment of Bruheim's poetry, inviting us to pause and reflect.

As we climbed, we read aloud the verses, each one resonating with the beauty of the surroundings. The views from the top were breathtaking, a panoramic vista of rolling hills and distant peaks. I felt a sense of peace wash over me, a feeling of being connected to something larger than myself. Aino, who usually rolls her eyes at anything remotely “cultural,” was surprisingly engaged, asking questions about Bruheim's life and work. It was a reminder that even teenagers can appreciate art when it’s presented in an accessible and engaging way.

The Poem Ladder is more than just a tourist attraction; it is a tribute to the power of words and the beauty of nature. Bruheim's poetry celebrates the simple joys of life, the changing seasons, and the connection between humanity and the natural world. As we descended the ladder, I felt inspired to embrace these values in my own life. It was a reminder that even in our busy, modern world, there is always time to slow down, to appreciate the beauty around us, and to connect with the things that truly matter.

For dinner, we decided to try Skeid Kro in Skjåk. This roadside restaurant is known for its generous portions of traditional Norwegian food, and it seemed like the perfect way to end our day of exploration. The restaurant has a cabin-like ambiance and a charming terrace, although it was a bit too chilly to sit outside. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff was friendly and attentive. Markus and I both ordered traditional Norwegian dishes, while Aino, still craving comfort food, opted for fish and chips. The food was hearty and delicious, and the portions were indeed generous. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of hiking and driving.

Skeid Kro was built in 1982 and serves good homemade food. To achieve the quality they desire, they prepare the food from scratch in their own processing plant. At Skeid Kro, you can enjoy a good meal in an informal, pleasant environment. The hosts try to live up to the hospitality that is traditional in Skjåk: When guests come to the farm, the best should be on the table, and there should be plenty of what is served. With this as a basis, Skeid Kro has gained a good reputation for good food and large portions at a reasonable price.

As we ate, we reflected on our day. We had driven through stunning landscapes, climbed a poetic ladder, and savored delicious food. It was a day of simple pleasures, a day of connection, and a day of inspiration. As we head into tomorrow, I’m looking forward to experiencing NASJONAL TURISTVEG Valdresflye and Steinplassen. I’m also hoping to find some time to do some shopping at Skogstad Lom.

Tomorrow promises more scenic routes and cultural experiences, as we plan to explore the Valdresflye Scenic Route and the Steinplassen. I'm particularly excited about the Valdresflye route, known for its dramatic mountain views and unique geological formations. And, of course, I'm looking forward to trying some new restaurants, including Aasgaard stogo for breakfast, Diner 13 for lunch, and Valdres Gjestegård for dinner.

Before heading back to our tent, we made a quick stop at Lobby Bar1 for a nightcap. It was a cozy little spot, perfect for unwinding after a long day. Sipping on a local beer, we toasted to our adventures and to the beauty of Jotunheimen. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place with my family. It was a day I would cherish forever.
