A Fond Farewell

As my solo adventure in Gran Paradiso National Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences and breathtaking beauty I've encountered. This final day was a perfect culmination of the entire trip, filled with stunning landscapes, delicious food, and a deep sense of connection with nature. It’s funny how a place can feel so familiar in such a short amount of time; I’m already plotting my return!

The day began with a hearty breakfast at La Lanterna del Duca in Ceresole Reale. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. I savored every bite of the local pastries and strong Italian coffee, knowing it would fuel me for the day's adventures. The hotel offered a typical mountain breakfast with local products. Homemade cakes, croissants, jams, yogurt, and fresh fruit were available. I chatted briefly with the friendly staff, exchanging stories of the park and its hidden gems. I made sure to express to them how much I enjoyed the hotel, as it was a great start to my day.

With renewed energy, I set off towards Lago Goletta. The trail wound through lush meadows dotted with wildflowers, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the rugged mountains in the distance. The hike was moderate, perfect for soaking in the scenery without being too strenuous. As I ascended, the views became increasingly spectacular. Patches of snow clung to the higher peaks, remnants of the winter’s embrace. The air was alive with the sounds of nature – the gentle rush of mountain streams, the chirping of birds, and the occasional whistle of a marmot.

“The mountains are calling and I must go.”

Reaching Lago Goletta was like stepping into a postcard. The crystal-clear lake reflected the surrounding peaks, creating a mirror image of stunning beauty. I found a secluded spot by the shore and simply sat, mesmerized by the view. The tranquility was profound, broken only by the occasional splash of a fish jumping in the lake. I took out my camera and captured as many photos as I could, trying to preserve the moment, but I knew that no image could truly capture the feeling of being there. From the banks of Lago Goletta, there was a breathtaking view of the glacier. It was the perfect spot for a picnic. I spent a couple of hours simply relaxing by the lake, soaking in the sun and enjoying the peace and quiet. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life back in Berlin.

After my lakeside respite, I decided to visit the Fondation Grand Paradis - Grand Paradis. Located in the Villaggio Minatori, the Foundation aims to promote cultural and environmental tourism in the Aosta Valley area of Gran Paradiso National Park. The Foundation also manages visitor centers in Cogne, Dégioz, and Rhêmes-Notre-Dame, as well as the Paradisia Alpine Botanical Garden. Although I couldn't explore all the centers, visiting the main location gave me a greater appreciation for the park's conservation efforts and the importance of preserving its natural heritage. The Gran Paradiso Film Festival is also promoted by the Foundation, showcasing nature cinema against the backdrop of the park. While I won't be able to attend this year's festival in July, it's definitely on my radar for future visits.

As evening approached, I made my way to Rifugio Le Fonti Minerali - Pizzeria for a well-deserved dinner. The rifugio was cozy and inviting, filled with the aroma of wood-fired pizza and hearty mountain cuisine. The staff were friendly and welcoming, eager to share stories of the region and offer recommendations. I ordered a pizza topped with local cheese and mushrooms, savoring every bite as I reflected on my day. The Refuge Fonti Minerali is also a restaurant and pizzeria. It was the first pizzeria in Ceresole Reale, with nearly forty years of history.

After dinner, I decided to check out JoJo's Bar for a nightcap. It was a small, unassuming place, but it had a warm and inviting atmosphere. I ordered a glass of local wine and chatted with the bartender, who shared stories of the region and its people. The bar was filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to share their experiences and connect with one another. It was the perfect way to end my last night in Gran Paradiso, surrounded by good company and the sounds of laughter and conversation.

As I sit here now, writing this final blog post from my cozy tent, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Gran Paradiso National Park has exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and cultural immersion. I’ve hiked through stunning landscapes, encountered diverse wildlife, and savored delicious local cuisine. But more than that, I’ve reconnected with nature and found a sense of peace and tranquility that I didn’t know I was missing. I am also grateful that I did not forget my hiking boots, camera, camping gear, map and compass, reusable water bottle, snacks, first aid kit, and warm clothing layers. I did forget my portable phone charger and sunscreen, but I managed. I had a wonderful time in the park.

Maximilian will be happy to see me when I return to Berlin. I'll have so many stories to tell him about my solo adventure in Gran Paradiso National Park. I know he'll be eager to hear about the breathtaking landscapes, the delicious food, and the friendly people I've met along the way. Perhaps next time, we'll come together and explore the park as a couple.

Tomorrow, I begin my journey back to Berlin, filled with memories that will last a lifetime. Gran Paradiso, you have captured my heart, and I know I will return someday soon. Until then, arrivederci!

This trip has reinforced my love for solo travel, and I’m already brainstorming my next adventure. Maybe I’ll explore the Scottish Highlands, or perhaps venture to Southeast Asia. The possibilities are endless, and I can’t wait to see where my wanderlust takes me next.

For now, though, it’s time to say goodbye to Gran Paradiso. Thank you for following along on this incredible journey. Until next time, happy travels!
