A Day of Majestic Views and Refreshing Encounters
Today was nothing short of spectacular, a day where the grandeur of nature met the simple joys of exploration. Leaving behind the cozy Lysefjorden Tourist Cabin, I set out to conquer Preikestolen, and let me tell you, it was an experience that stirred something deep within me. The hike, the waterfall, the food – each moment felt like a carefully curated piece of a larger, breathtaking puzzle.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at the Lysefjorden Tourist Cabin. It was a traditional Norwegian breakfast buffet, a colorful spread that promised a good start to a day filled with activity. Fuelled up, I embarked on the drive to Preikestolen. The drive itself was a treat, winding through roads that offered glimpses of the stunning Lysefjord. The anticipation was building, and I could feel the familiar thrill of adventure bubbling inside me. It reminded me of our family trips to Denali back in Alaska, that same sense of awe and respect for the natural world. I made a mental note to share these experiences with Aino someday. Maybe next year, Markus and Aino will join me on a similar adventure.
Arriving at the Preikestolen BaseCamp, I took a moment to soak in the atmosphere. The air was crisp, and the excitement was palpable as fellow hikers geared up for the trek. The basecamp itself was bustling with activity, a hub of energy before the tranquility of the trail. I grabbed a quick coffee at the Preikestolen Café, a necessary ritual before any hike, and then I was off.
The hike to Preikestolen, also known as Pulpit Rock, was graded as moderate, and I found it to be a good challenge. The trail was well-maintained, with a mix of terrain that kept things interesting – from swampland and forests to stone stairways built by Nepalese sherpas. The ascent was steady, and I took my time, mindful of the stunning scenery unfolding around me. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth, a combination that always feels like home. It was a bit crowded, as June is peak season, but I embraced the shared experience, exchanging smiles and nods with other hikers.
It's not just about reaching the destination; it's about the journey and the moments of wonder along the way.
Reaching the top of Preikestolen was an emotional experience. The view was simply breathtaking – the Lysefjord stretched out below, a vast expanse of water framed by towering cliffs. The sheer drop was a bit unnerving, but the panoramic vista was worth every ounce of courage. I found a spot away from the crowds and sat in silence, letting the beauty of the fjord wash over me. It was a moment of profound peace, a feeling of being utterly connected to something larger than myself. I spent about an hour at the top, taking photos and simply absorbing the majesty of the landscape. It was a moment I knew I would carry with me long after I left Norway.
The descent was just as rewarding, offering different perspectives on the already stunning scenery. My knees felt the strain a bit, a gentle reminder of my age, but the sense of accomplishment kept me going. Back at the basecamp, I treated myself to a well-deserved pastry at the café.
Next on the itinerary was the Hengjanefossen waterfall. Instead of driving, I opted for a scenic boat tour from Forsand, which provided direct access to the waterfall. The boat ride itself was a treat, gliding through the serene waters of the Lysefjord. The views were spectacular, offering a different vantage point of Preikestolen and the surrounding landscape. As we approached Hengjanefossen, I could feel the anticipation building. The waterfall is an impressive cascade, plunging down the steep rock faces of the Lysefjord. As the boat drew closer, the mist enveloped us, a refreshing and invigorating experience. I even managed to catch a glimpse of a few seals basking on the rocks nearby.
For lunch, I stopped at Flørli Cafe, accessible only by ferry. The café is located in the historic hydropower station from 1916, and the setting was unique and charming. I enjoyed a simple but delicious meal of traditional Norwegian fare, savoring the flavors and the history of the place. The hydroelectric power station was a must-see in Flørli. In the large turbine hall, I saw an original turbine and visited the control room. The exhibition told the tale of this feat of engineering and how it was to live and work here through pictures, artifacts and video.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Gøysa Gard for dinner. The farm is charming, with a panoramic view of the Lysefjord. The dinner was a delightful affair, featuring local ingredients prepared with care and creativity. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, savoring the flavors of Norway while reflecting on the beauty I had witnessed. I chatted with some locals, learning about their lives and traditions, feeling a sense of connection to this beautiful corner of the world.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kjerag and Kjeragbolten, another iconic site in the Lysefjord. I've heard the hike is more challenging than Preikestolen, but the reward is well worth the effort. I'm also looking forward to visiting Kjeragfoss, another stunning waterfall in the area. Before embarking on that adventure, I'll grab breakfast at Kjerag (Øygardstøl) and pick up some supplies at Joker Lysefjorden.
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel, to explore, to immerse myself in the beauty of the world. The Lysefjord has a way of capturing your heart, of making you feel small yet connected. It's a place where nature reigns supreme, and where every moment is a gift. And as I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences, the encounters, and the memories made. I look forward to sharing more of my journey with you, as I continue to explore the wonders of Norway.
