Solo Adventure in the Majestic Lysefjord
Day 7: Conquering Preikestolen and Discovering Stavanger's Charm
A day of breathtaking views from Preikestolen followed by an exploration of Stavanger's vibrant Geopark and culinary delights.
A Day of Heights and City Lights
Today was a day of contrasts, from the soaring heights of Preikestolen to the grounded artistry of Stavanger's Geopark. It was a day that reminded me why I love to travel—for the moments of awe in nature and the unexpected discoveries in urban spaces.
My day began early, fueled by anticipation and a hearty breakfast at Lysefjordsenteret AS. I needed the energy for the Preikestolen Trail, a hike I had been eagerly awaiting. The morning air was crisp, a typical June day in Norway, with a hint of moisture that promised a refreshing coolness during the ascent.

The drive to the trailhead was scenic in itself, winding through lush green landscapes that seemed to whisper ancient tales. Arriving at the parking area, I was greeted by a flurry of activity—families, solo adventurers like myself , and groups of friends, all eager to experience the famed Pulpit Rock. I double-checked my backpack, making sure I had enough water, a few snacks from Coop Marked Forsand, and of course, my camera. I still regretted forgetting my portable phone charger, a rookie mistake I wouldn't make again.
The Preikestolen Trail, I quickly discovered, was not for the faint of heart. The path was a mix of rocky terrain, steep inclines, and surprisingly slippery sections. I was grateful for my hiking boots, a definite essential for this trek. Despite the physical challenge, the views along the way were mesmerizing. Verdant forests, shimmering lakes, and glimpses of the Lysefjord far below kept me motivated.
About halfway up, I paused to catch my breath and take in the panorama. The sun peeked through the clouds, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was one of those moments where everything felt perfectly aligned—the beauty of nature, the satisfaction of physical exertion, and the quiet solitude of a solo journey.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the simple act of placing one foot in front of the other, surrounded by the quiet majesty of nature.
As I neared the summit, the trail became more crowded. Excitement buzzed in the air as hikers caught their first glimpse of Preikestolen, the majestic Pulpit Rock. And then, there it was—a vast, flat plateau jutting out over the Lysefjord, a sheer drop of 604 meters to the water below.
The view was, without exaggeration, breathtaking. The Lysefjord stretched out before me, a ribbon of deep blue framed by towering cliffs. Boats glided silently across the water, appearing as tiny toys from my vantage point. I found a spot away from the throng of photo-takers and simply sat, absorbing the scene. The vastness of the landscape, the stillness of the air, it was a moment of pure serenity.
After spending a good hour at Preikestolen, soaking in the views and capturing a few photos, I began my descent. The hike down was just as challenging as the ascent, requiring careful footing and a good dose of patience. Back at the base, I felt a sense of accomplishment, a satisfying weariness that comes from a day well spent in nature.
With the Preikestolen hike behind me, I decided to explore Stavanger itself. I hopped in my rental car and drove to the city, eager to discover its urban charms. My first stop was Geoparken, a unique park built on the site of a former shipyard.

Geoparken is not your typical green space. It's a playground of recycled oil industry materials—pipes, platforms, and metal structures transformed into climbing frames, slides, and sculptures. It was a fascinating blend of industrial grit and creative ingenuity. Children shrieked with laughter as they clambered over the structures, while adults wandered through the park, marveling at the inventive use of discarded materials. The park was abuzz with activity; I learned that Stavanger is celebrating its 900th anniversary in 2025, and there are many events planned throughout the year.
After Geoparken, my stomach started to rumble. I decided to grab lunch at Gøysa Gard - Lysefjord, a restaurant recommended by a local. The restaurant was charming, with a cozy atmosphere and stunning views of the Lysefjord. I ordered a traditional Norwegian dish, fish, and potatoes, which was absolutely delicious. It was the perfect way to refuel after my morning hike.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Kjerag Café & Restaurant (Øygardstøl) for dinner. The drive up was breathtaking, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Lysefjord. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with a warm atmosphere that made me feel right at home. I enjoyed a hearty meal of traditional Norwegian cuisine, savoring every bite as I reflected on the day's adventures.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Lysefjord Bridge and the mysterious Fantahåla cave. I'm also hoping to find a cozy spot at BlygeHarry, a local bar, to unwind and soak in the Norwegian atmosphere. But for tonight, I'm content to rest and dream of soaring cliffs and city lights.
As I reflect on today, I am reminded of the simple joys of solo travel. The freedom to explore at my own pace, the opportunity to connect with nature and culture, and the chance to discover hidden gems along the way. Lysefjord has captured my heart, and I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.
Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Lysefjord, Norway, on a solo journey filled with adventure, reflection, and breathtaking landscapes.
