Today was a day of contrasts, a true testament to the dramatic landscapes of Lysefjord. From the seemingly endless climb up the Flørlitrappene, the world's longest wooden staircase, to the exhilarating descent into Lysebotn, it was an adventure that tested my limits and rewarded me with unforgettable views. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded my cozy librarian's desk in Helsinki for the unpredictable path of a solo traveler.

My morning began with an early ferry to Flørli, a charming, roadless hamlet known for its hydropower history and, more famously, the Flørlitrappene—the world's longest wooden staircase. As the ferry approached, the sheer scale of the stairs became apparent, a daunting yet irresistible challenge etched into the mountainside. I grabbed a quick breakfast at Flørli Cafe, knowing I needed fuel for the climb ahead.

The Flørli Cafe was charming, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the staff were very kind. Fortified with a hearty breakfast, I began my ascent. The 4,444 steps wind alongside the old hydropower pipelines, a testament to the ingenuity of those who came before us. The climb was strenuous, each step a reminder of the elevation I was gaining. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to soak in the ever-expanding views of Lysefjord.

About halfway up, I reached the Cable House, where a large winch still stands, a relic from the days when a trolley transported people and materials up the mountain. It was a fascinating glimpse into the past, a moment to appreciate the history intertwined with this incredible feat of engineering. The higher I climbed, the more the landscape transformed. The trees gave way to bare rock, and the views became even more panoramic.

The world reveals itself to those who dare to climb, to push beyond their comfort zone, and to embrace the challenges that lie ahead.

Reaching the top was an accomplishment. The sense of exhilaration was matched only by the stunning vista that unfolded before me. The vast expanse of Lysefjord, the surrounding mountains, and the sheer drop below created a scene that was both awe-inspiring and humbling. I took some time to explore the trails at the summit, breathing in the crisp mountain air and reflecting on the journey thus far. I chose to descend via the Rallarstien, a path that offered a different perspective on the landscape. The descent was steep in sections, and I had to tread carefully, but the change of scenery was well worth it.

Back in Flørli, I savored a well-deserved lunch, reflecting on the morning's adventure. The Flørli stairs are a challenging but rewarding experience, a true highlight of my time in Lysefjord. I can see why people travel from all over the world to test themselves against this unique stairway.

After the climb at Flørli, I hopped on another ferry to Lysebotn, a village nestled at the end of Lysefjord. But the journey was far from over; the next adventure involved navigating the famed Lysebotn Stiga, a road known for its 27 hairpin turns.

The drive up Lysebotn Stiga was nothing short of thrilling. Each hairpin turn demanded careful maneuvering, and the steep incline tested the car's engine. I made sure to stop at the Lysebotn Stiga viewpoint, taking a moment to appreciate the incredible feat of engineering and the panoramic views of Lysefjord.

At the top, I paused at Øygardstøl, the parking area for the Kjerag hike, and grabbed dinner at Kjerag Café & Restaurant. The café offered hearty meals and stunning views, a perfect way to refuel after a day of hiking and driving. I met a few fellow travelers there. We traded stories of our adventures in Lysefjord. The sense of camaraderie among those who seek out these remote and challenging destinations is always heartwarming.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Radlaren Pub. It was a cozy spot, and I enjoyed chatting with some locals and fellow tourists, sharing stories of our adventures and experiences in the region. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, a perfect way to unwind after a day of strenuous activity. It was a classic pub, and the bartender was very friendly.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of Lysefjord's hidden gems. My itinerary includes a visit to Nesatind and Revså fossefall, two more natural wonders that promise breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. I'm also planning to stop by Gøysa Gard - Lysefjord for breakfast and fjord restaurant Lysefjord-Helleren for dinner, eager to sample more of the local cuisine. And of course, I'll make sure to visit Lysebotn landhandel & café for some local treats and souvenirs.

As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible corner of the world. Lysefjord has challenged me, inspired me, and reminded me of the power and beauty of nature. It's a journey I'll never forget, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

It is experiences like these which make me feel alive, and I am so glad that I decided to embark on this solo journey instead of staying home and knitting Finnish patterns. I am sure Aino is having a good time with Markus back in Helsinki, but I know that this trip is exactly what I needed to recharge my batteries before going back to the library.

I am also glad that I remembered to pack my hiking boots and rain jacket, although I am missing my portable phone charger and binoculars. I guess I will have to be more careful next time.

The experiences of the day are so vivid that I will be sure to write about them in my travel journal tonight. It helps me remember even the smallest detail, and when I am old and grey, I can relive these moments again and again.

Now, I am off to bed. Tomorrow is a new day, and I am sure it will be just as exciting as today was.
