Day 4: Waterfalls, Reservoirs, and Local Flavors

Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park. I set out to explore some of the region's most stunning waterfalls and reservoirs, and to savor the local cuisine that makes this area so unique. It was a day of breathtaking sights, delicious food, and a deeper connection with nature.

The morning chill was a stark reminder that December in Portugal's Peneda-Gerês National Park isn't exactly beach weather. The average highs are around 11°C (53°F) and lows around 4°C (39°F). But I layered up, grabbed my camera, and headed out, determined to make the most of the day. I was also kicking myself for forgetting my portable water filter; I'll need to remember to pick one up tomorrow when I pass by a shop in Gerês.

My first stop was the magnificent Pitões das Júnias cascata. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the park's rugged landscape. The village of Pitões das Júnias is charming, with stone houses and a palpable sense of history. The waterfall is easily one of the highest in the Serra do Gerês, with its tallest drop being an impressive 30 meters. The trail to the waterfall was short but rewarding, leading to a viewpoint where I could fully appreciate the cascade's power and beauty. The water plunged into a pool surrounded by granite outcrops, creating a magical scene. I spent a good hour there, taking photos and simply soaking in the tranquility.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Next on my itinerary was the Barragem do Ribeiro de Brufe, a reservoir known for its serene beauty. The drive from Pitões das Júnias took me through more of the park's stunning scenery. When I arrived, I was struck by the calm of the water and the surrounding landscape. The reservoir is nestled among rolling hills and forests, making it a perfect spot for a peaceful walk. I took a leisurely stroll along the shore, enjoying the crisp air and the quiet atmosphere. It was a welcome contrast to the more dramatic scenery of the waterfalls, offering a different perspective on the park's natural beauty.

For lunch, I stopped at Petiscos da Bó Gusta, a local restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. Located in the heart of Gerês, the restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I decided to try the *posta geresiana*, a regional specialty consisting of a thick-cut grilled steak. It was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The *cabrito assado no forno* (roast goat) and *chanfana de cabra* (goat stew) also looked tempting. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect place to refuel after a morning of exploring.

After lunch, I continued my waterfall quest with a visit to Cascatas de Fecha de Barjas (ou Cascatas do Tahiti). This was perhaps the most challenging destination of the day, as the access to the waterfall involves a somewhat difficult hike. The trail was steep and slippery in places, but the stunning views along the way made it all worthwhile. The waterfall itself is a series of cascades and natural pools, creating a truly magical landscape. The water was crystal clear, and the surrounding vegetation was lush and green. I spent some time exploring the area, taking photos and enjoying the refreshing spray of the falls. I can see why it's also called Tahiti Waterfall; it felt like a hidden paradise.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to my campsite, but not before stopping at Chamadouro Bar for a well-deserved drink. This cozy bar is known for its friendly atmosphere and local charm. I ordered a glass of local wine and sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure. The bar had a comfortable atmosphere and I enjoyed a glass of local wine.

For dinner, I decided to try Encosta do Rio, another local restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese dishes. I opted for a hearty stew, which was exactly what I needed after a long day outdoors. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was a great way to experience the local culture and cuisine.

Before heading to bed, I checked my itinerary for tomorrow. I'm planning to visit Cascata da Laja, Ribeiro das Salas and Fonte da Batoca. I will also need to get some supplies from Supermercado Amanhecer Gerês. I'm looking forward to another day of exploration and adventure in this beautiful national park. I'm also planning to have breakfast at Restaurante Retiro do Gerês, lunch at Marina Bar and dinner at Bem Cozinhado.

Today was a reminder of why I love solo travel. It gives me the freedom to explore at my own pace, to discover hidden gems, and to connect with nature on a deeper level. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt grateful for the experiences of the day and excited for what tomorrow would bring.

I'm really enjoying this solo trip, and I know Max would have loved to see these waterfalls. Maybe I'll convince him to come back with me next time. I miss our evening chats, but the solitude here is also a welcome change. It allows me to recharge and reflect on my experiences in a way that's hard to do when I'm with someone else.

I'm also glad I decided to keep this blog going. It's a great way to document my adventures and share them with others. Plus, it gives me a chance to reflect on what I've learned and experienced. Maybe I'll even inspire someone else to step outside their comfort zone and explore the world for themselves.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore more of the park's hidden corners, seeking out more waterfalls and enjoying the peace and quiet of nature. I'm also hoping to capture some stunning photographs, as the light in the morning is usually perfect for landscape photography. So stay tuned for more adventures from Peneda-Gerês National Park!
