A Day of Discovery in Gerês

Today was all about venturing deeper into the heart of Peneda-Gerês National Park. After a good night's sleep in my tent, nestled somewhere near Vila do Gerês, I was eager to explore more of what this stunning landscape had to offer. The plan was ambitious: a scenic viewpoint, a mesmerizing waterfall, and a journey to the haunting remains of an old mine. All this, fueled by local flavors and the crisp December air.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Pedra Bela Gerês. It was a cozy spot, and I savored every bite of my meal, knowing I needed the energy for the day ahead. The reviews I'd read mentioned their attentive service and home-style cooking, and they were spot on. I made sure to try some local cheese and strong coffee to properly fuel up before setting off on my adventure. With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out towards my first destination: Miradouro de Junceda.

The drive to the viewpoint was an experience in itself. The road leading up to it was a bit rough, a dirt track riddled with potholes, as some reviews had warned. I took it slow and steady, enjoying the ruggedness of the journey. Finally, I arrived at Miradouro de Junceda, and the view was simply breathtaking. From 915 meters high, the entire Gerês valley unfolded before me. The panoramic vista stretched from the peaks of Pé de Cabril and Borrageiro to the Caniçada reservoir. I spent a good while there, just soaking it all in and snapping photos. It was a perfect start to the day, a moment of pure serenity amidst nature's grandeur.

Next on the itinerary was Cascata de Cela Cavalos, a waterfall I'd been particularly excited about. The drive to Cela Cavalos took me through winding roads and charming little villages. I parked near the village of Outeiro and began the trek to the waterfall. The hike itself was relatively easy, though proper caution is always recommended. The path meandered through lush greenery, and the sound of rushing water grew louder as I approached. Finally, I reached the waterfall, and it was even more impressive in person. The water cascaded down the rocks, forming a crystal-clear pool at the bottom. I took some time to admire the scene, feeling the cool spray on my face. It was a truly magical spot, a hidden gem within the national park. I even considered taking a dip in the pool, but the December air was a bit too chilly for that!

For lunch, I decided to try Vai... Vai Gerês, a local restaurant known for its pizzas and snacks. It was a casual and welcoming place, perfect for a quick bite. I opted for a 'francesinha', a local specialty, and it was delicious. The staff were friendly, and the prices were reasonable, making it a great spot for a midday meal. I overheard some other travelers chatting about their hiking adventures, and it was nice to feel a sense of camaraderie with fellow explorers.

With renewed energy, I set off towards my final destination: Minas dos Carris. This abandoned mining complex was something I'd read about and was intrigued to see. The drive there was long and winding, taking me further into the mountains. The final stretch of the journey had to be done on foot. The trail was rocky and uneven, and it was clear that this was a remote and isolated place. As I hiked, the landscape transformed into a rugged, granite terrain. Finally, I reached the site of the mines, and it was a surreal experience. The ruins of the old buildings stood as silent witnesses to a bygone era. The mines were once used to extract tungsten, a metal that was in high demand during the mid-20th century.

The area was deserted, and the only sounds were the wind and the occasional bird call. I explored the ruins, imagining what life must have been like for the miners who worked there. It was a harsh and unforgiving environment, but the views were stunning. From an altitude of 1,500 meters, I could see for miles in every direction. The isolation and desolation of the site were both eerie and captivating. As the sun began to set, I started my trek back down the mountain. The descent was challenging, but the thought of a warm meal and a cozy bed kept me going. I decided to have dinner at Restaurante Cerdeira, known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. I treated myself to a hearty meal of roasted lamb and a glass of local wine. It was the perfect way to end a long and rewarding day.

Before heading back to my camp, I decided to stop by Pirata Do Gerês for a nightcap. The bar had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were welcoming. I enjoyed a glass of local wine, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar is known for its healthy dishes and great cocktail menu. It was the perfect way to unwind before heading back to my tent for the night.

As I lay in my tent, listening to the sounds of the forest, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Peneda-Gerês National Park had once again exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and local flavor. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Miradouro da Fraga Negra, Cascata da Rajada and Poço da Gola. I might also visit the Peneda Gerês Adventure Center by Tobogã to get some supplies, since I forgot my portable water filter and map of the hiking trails. It's these moments of solitude and connection with nature that make my solo travels so rewarding, recharging my spirit and providing fresh inspiration for my blog.
