Sunday Strolls and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of wandering through the heart of San Cristobal de las Casas, soaking in the atmosphere, and indulging in the local cuisine. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel solo – the freedom to explore at my own pace and discover hidden gems along the way.
My day began with a leisurely breakfast at Te Quiero Verde. I'd heard whispers about this vegan spot, and as someone who appreciates a good, healthy meal, I had to check it out. The restaurant was a vibrant mix of colors and textures, with a cozy atmosphere that made me feel right at home. I ordered their Elemental burger and a fresh juice, and sat in their back outside seating area. It was the perfect way to start the day, fueling up for a day of exploration. Maximilian would have loved this place. He's always looking for great vegan options when we travel together.

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I headed towards the Zócalo, the main square in San Cristobal. The city was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all drawn to the heart of the city. The Zócalo was alive with energy – street vendors selling their wares, families enjoying the crisp morning air, and the ever-present hum of conversations in Spanish. I spent some time simply observing, watching the rhythm of daily life unfold around me. It’s fascinating how each city has its own unique pulse, a distinct energy that sets it apart.

From the Zócalo, I ventured into the Centro de San Cristóbal de las Casas. The architecture here is simply stunning – colonial buildings painted in vibrant colors, each one seemingly telling its own story. I wandered through the streets, camera in hand, capturing the beauty of the city. I must have taken hundreds of photos today; I am excited to sift through them later and maybe post some on my blog. I even stumbled upon a small art exhibition in a courtyard, showcasing the work of local artists. It was a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry that makes this city so special.

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
Lunch was an adventure in itself. I decided to try Cardamomo Cocina Hindu, an Indian restaurant that had caught my eye earlier in the day. I was a bit skeptical at first – Indian food in Mexico? But my curiosity got the better of me. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with the aroma of spices filling the air. I ordered the butter chicken, after reading some reviews. It was flavorful and comforting, a welcome change from the Mexican cuisine I had been enjoying. I savored every bite, appreciating the unexpected culinary detour. It was a reminder that travel is full of surprises, and sometimes the best experiences are the ones you least expect. I made a mental note to tell Maximilian about this place; we both love Indian food, and I know he would be intrigued by this unexpected find.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Boutique Ashley. I wasn't necessarily looking for anything in particular, but I enjoy browsing local shops and seeing what treasures I can find. The boutique was filled with unique clothing, jewelry, and accessories, all handcrafted by local artisans. I ended up buying a beautiful scarf, hand-embroidered with traditional designs. It's a perfect souvenir, a reminder of my time in San Cristobal. I think it will go nicely with the dress I bought in Berlin last year.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn to Posheria, a bar known for its traditional Pox drink. Pox, I learned, is a traditional Mayan spirit made from corn, and it plays an important role in the local culture. The bar had a rustic charm, with a cozy atmosphere that invited you to linger. I ordered a Pox and sipped it slowly, savoring the unique flavor. It was strong and earthy, with a hint of sweetness. It was a perfect way to end the day, reflecting on my adventures and soaking in the atmosphere of San Cristobal. I learned that Pox is more than just a drink; it's a cultural experience, a connection to the history and traditions of the Mayan people.

For dinner, I chose Restaurante Al Sazón Que Me Toquen... This restaurant is inspired by Chiapanecan gastronomy, offering an authentic experience of traditional Mexican cuisine. The space was colorful and typical of Chiapas, with live music. I enjoyed the Filete a la Veracruzana. The service was great, and the prices were reasonable.

As I walked back to Hotel Sombra del Agua, the city was bathed in the warm glow of streetlights. The air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter, a testament to the vibrant spirit of San Cristobal. I felt a sense of contentment, a feeling of being fully present in the moment. These are the moments I live for, the moments that make travel so rewarding. I thought about Maximilian back in Berlin and wished he could be here with me to share this experience. I know he would love this city as much as I do.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Parque Ecoturístico Rancho Nuevo and Grutas Del Mamut [Parks]. I’ve heard it’s a beautiful natural area just outside the city, and I’m eager to explore the caves and the surrounding landscape. I’m also planning to try ASIARICO Japon a Corea for breakfast, Bangcook Tailandés for lunch, and Restaurant Las Nubes Café for dinner. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Eklektik [Shop] and maybe enjoy a drink at Porter [Bar]. It promises to be another day of adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to see what San Cristobal has in store for me.
As I settle into my hotel room, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore the world. Travel is more than just seeing new places; it's about connecting with different cultures, expanding your horizons, and discovering new things about yourself. And as I drift off to sleep, I know that tomorrow will bring another day of unforgettable experiences.
I almost forgot my portable charger and rain jacket but I will be sure to pack them for tomorrow's adventure!
