Solo Exploration in San Cristobal de las Casas
Day 9: Caves and Culture: Exploring the Wonders of Rancho Nuevo
Delving into the depths of Rancho Nuevo's caves and savoring the flavors of San Cristobal de las Casas on a day of exploration.
A Day of Subterranean Wonders & Culinary Delights
Today was all about embracing the natural beauty just outside San Cristobal de las Casas. I decided to venture into the Parque Ecoturístico Rancho Nuevo and explore the Grutas Del Mamut, a day filled with breathtaking sights and delightful flavors.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at ASIARICO Japon a Corea. It was an interesting choice, considering I was in Mexico, but I'm always up for trying new things! The fusion of Japanese and Korean flavors was a unique and delicious way to start the day, fueling me up for my adventures ahead. I made a mental note to perhaps try making a Korean dish for Maximilian when I get back to Berlin; he's always up for culinary experimentation.

After breakfast, I made my way to Parque Ecoturístico Rancho Nuevo. The drive itself was scenic, with the crisp October air and the surrounding landscape painting a pretty picture. The park is nestled in a lush coniferous forest, about 10 kilometers from San Cristobal de las Casas. It's known for its extensive cave system, with the main cave stretching over 10 kilometers long and reaching depths of up to 550 meters.
Stepping into the Grutas Del Mamut was like entering another world. The cave gets its name from a rock formation inside that resembles a mammoth, and it’s quite something to see. Unlike some of the other caves in the area, Grutas del Mamut is still in its ‘basic’ stage, which in a way, added to its charm. The raw, untouched beauty of the cave was mesmerizing. I spent a good amount of time just wandering through the illuminated walkways, admiring the stalactites and stalagmites that have been formed over millennia.

The park itself offers a range of activities, from horseback riding to camping, and even a long slide for the kids. I opted for a leisurely walk through the forest, enjoying the fresh air and the peaceful atmosphere. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Although I didn't try it myself, I saw that you can even take a rustic raft ride. Maybe next time I'll be a little more adventurous!
For lunch, I decided to try Bangcook Tailandés, enticed by the promise of authentic Thai cuisine. I opted for the Seafood Green Curry, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were vibrant and the spices were just right, offering a delightful contrast to the Mexican cuisine I've been enjoying. It's funny, finding such a great Thai place in the heart of Mexico! It reminded me of some of the hole-in-the-wall places Maximilian and I discovered in Berlin, serving up unexpected culinary gems.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the unexpected detours.
After lunch, I took some time to explore the local shops. I stumbled upon Eklektik, a store that showcases the rich culture and craftsmanship of Chiapas. They have everything from textiles and wood carvings to jewelry and antiques. I couldn't resist picking up a few small souvenirs for friends and family back home. The shop supports the cultural activities of the Mario Uvence Cultural Foundation, which promotes Chiapas' cultural heritage. It felt good to support a business that gives back to the community.

As the day drew to a close, I headed back to San Cristobal, ready for a relaxing evening. But before heading back to the hotel, I decided to have dinner at Restaurant Las Nubes Café. The location was easy to find, and the restaurant was very cozy. The international cuisine was excellent, and I particularly enjoyed the relaxed ambiance and the friendly staff. I opted for a traditional Mexican dish, wanting to end the day with a taste of the local flavors. The food was delicious, and the service was great.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Porter, a local bar known for its craft beers and burgers. It was a great spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was lively but not too overwhelming. I enjoyed a local craft beer and chatted with some of the other patrons, sharing stories and travel tips. I didn't try the burgers, but I heard they're phenomenal, especially on Wednesdays when they're offered at a special price. Maybe I'll have to come back later in the week!

Today was a perfect blend of nature, culture, and culinary delights. From the depths of the Grutas Del Mamut to the vibrant flavors of San Cristobal's restaurants, every moment was a new discovery. It reminded me why I love traveling – the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and experience the world in all its beauty and diversity. It's moments like these that I'll cherish long after I've returned to Berlin.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Arches Park and Iglesia de San Cristóbalito, continuing my exploration of this charming city. I'm also hoping to do some more shopping and maybe discover another hidden gem or two. Until then, ¡adiós from San Cristobal de las Casas!
I am also looking forward to trying LA PEREGRINA COCINA YUCATECA, Maya Pakal Restaurant and Casa de Willy Restaurante tomorrow!
