A Day of Discovery in the Blue Pearl

Another day, another adventure in Chefchaouen! Today was all about soaking in the local culture, seeing some incredible sights, and, of course, indulging in delicious Moroccan food. After four days here, I’m really starting to feel like I’m getting to know this magical blue city. I'm excited to share all the details of my day, from exploring the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen to enjoying a vibrant evening with friends.

Our day kicked off with a delightful breakfast at Cafetería Lhawta. It’s a cozy little spot, and the perfect place to fuel up before a day of exploring. I had some traditional Moroccan pancakes with honey and a strong coffee – just what I needed.

First up on our itinerary was the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen. Nestled in the heart of the medina, it's the oldest mosque in the city and a significant historical landmark. As a non-Muslim, I couldn't go inside, but admiring its architecture from the outside was still a treat. The octagonal minaret is particularly striking, and I learned that the mosque dates back to the 15th century, with some suggesting it was built by the son of the town's founder. Standing in Place Outa Hammam, the main square, the mosque exudes a sense of history and serenity. It’s amazing to think this mosque has been a central part of Chefchaouen for centuries.

Afterward, we wandered through the blue-washed streets towards Dar Antonio Chefchaouen, a guesthouse known for its traditional Moroccan architecture and warm hospitality. Although we weren't staying there, I wanted to see this charming accommodation that blends local art with modern comforts. The reviews I had read mentioned a serene ambiance and a lovely courtyard, and I was curious to experience the charm myself. While we didn’t get to peek inside, the exterior was beautiful, reflecting the unique character of Chefchaouen.

Next on our list was finding the perfect viewpoint. We made our way towards the Spanish Mosque, a short walk from the city, crossing the Ras el Maa river. The trail was easy enough to follow, and in about 20 minutes, we reached the mosque. From there, the view of Chefchaouen was simply breathtaking. The sea of blue and white houses spread out before us, nestled against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. I can see why this spot is so popular, and I can imagine that the sunset here would be magical.

For lunch, we decided on Restaurant Triana. It was a great choice! The restaurant had a nice decor and a calm atmosphere. I ordered the seafood salad, while my friends opted for the lamb tagine, both were delicious. The service was friendly, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning adventures.

As the day wound down, we made our way to Restaurant Bar Chaouen. This lively spot is known for its vibrant atmosphere and friendly staff. We enjoyed some local Moroccan beverages while soaking in the picturesque views of the surrounding mountains. The bar had a great mix of traditional Moroccan dishes and international cuisine. It was the perfect place to unwind and socialize with friends and fellow travelers.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Dar El Salam. The restaurant boasts a warm and inviting atmosphere. I decided to try the tagine, and it was incredible. The restaurant is known for its traditional dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The staff was friendly and eager to recommend dishes. The Moroccan decor created a cozy space, making our dining experience special.

Before heading back to the Hotel Barcelona, we took a leisurely stroll through the medina. The blue-washed streets were even more enchanting at night. The soft glow of the street lamps cast a magical light on the buildings, creating a serene atmosphere. We stopped by a few shops, admiring the local crafts and souvenirs. It was the perfect way to end a fantastic day in Chefchaouen.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Park Sidi Abdelhamid and the Sidi Bouchouka photo spot. I'm also hoping to pick up some souvenirs at the Hibart Souvenirs Shop. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems Chefchaouen has in store for us.

Chefchaouen continues to surprise and delight me at every turn. It’s a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the local culture, enjoy stunning scenery, and savor delicious food. I’m so grateful for this experience and can’t wait to share more of my adventures with you!

Even though Hans couldn't make it on this trip, I know he would have loved wandering these blue streets with me. I'm already planning a return trip so we can experience this magical place together. And maybe next time, I’ll remember to pack my sunglasses!
