Finding My Sossego in Nature's Embrace

Today was a symphony of nature's finest compositions. From the exhilarating trek to Cachoeira do Sossego to the tranquil moments at Pratinha, every second was a sensory delight. It's days like these that remind me why I traded my steady translation gigs for the unpredictable, yet profoundly rewarding, life of a travel blogger. Sharing these moments, these hidden gems, with you all is what fuels my wanderlust.

The day began with an early start from Lençóis. I grabbed a quick coffee and some pão de queijo from a local bakery—fuel for the adventure ahead. My destination: Cachoeira do Sossego, or Serenity Waterfall. The name alone promised a tranquil escape, and I was eager to see if it lived up to its moniker. The trailhead was a short drive from town, and soon I was lacing up my hiking boots, ready to tackle what I’d heard was a moderately challenging trek.

The path to Cachoeira do Sossego was an adventure in itself. The initial part of the trail wound through a beautiful landscape, but soon enough, it transformed into a rocky riverbed. Hopping from one boulder to another, I felt like a kid again, my focus entirely on the next step. The sun was already high, and the air was thick with humidity, but the stunning scenery kept my spirits soaring. Towering canyon walls surrounded me, and the vegetation was lush and vibrant.

The hike required navigating numerous rocks and wading through shallow streams. I was grateful for my hiking boots and the walking stick I’d picked up in Lençóis. There were moments when I had to scramble over larger rocks, testing my balance and agility. I chuckled to myself, thinking how Hans would have loved this challenge. He always did enjoy a good hike in the Franconian Switzerland region back home. I made a mental note to bring him here someday; he and Liesel would adore it.

After about three hours of hiking, the sound of rushing water grew louder, signaling that I was close. And then, there it was: Cachoeira do Sossego. The waterfall cascaded down from about 15 meters into a crystal-clear pool. The sight was breathtaking. The water looked so inviting, and after the long hike, I couldn't resist diving in. The water was refreshingly cold, washing away the sweat and fatigue. I swam to the base of the falls, letting the water pound on my shoulders, feeling utterly rejuvenated.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.

I spent a good hour at Cachoeira do Sossego, swimming, taking photos, and simply soaking in the serenity. It was the perfect reward for the challenging hike. As I sat on a rock, drying off in the sun, I reflected on the journey. It wasn't just about reaching the waterfall; it was about the experience of getting there, the challenges overcome, and the beauty discovered along the way.

Reluctantly, I started the trek back, knowing I had another destination to explore: Pratinha. The return hike was just as demanding, but the thought of another beautiful spot kept me motivated. Back in Lençóis, I treated myself to a well-deserved lunch at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. I had heard great things about their traditional Bahian cuisine, and I wasn't disappointed. I opted for the Moqueca de Cajú, a flavorful stew made with cashew fruit, and it was absolutely divine. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly friendly. It was the perfect place to refuel before the afternoon's adventure.

With my belly full and my energy restored, I set off for Pratinha. Located near the municipality of Iraquara, Pratinha is known for its stunning caves and crystal-clear waters. The entrance fee to Fazenda Pratinha includes access to the Gruta Azul, which is also on the property. As I approached, the landscape transformed once again, with vast open fields dotted with cacti and scrubby vegetation. It was a stark contrast to the lush greenery of Cachoeira do Sossego, showcasing the diverse beauty of Chapada Diamantina.

Fazenda Pratinha is a popular spot, and for good reason. The main attraction is the Gruta da Pratinha, a cave filled with incredibly clear water. The water has a mesmerizing mix of green, blue, and silver hues due to the high concentration of limestone. I rented a snorkel and mask and plunged into the cool water. Swimming through the cave was an otherworldly experience. The water was so clear that I felt like I was floating in air. I explored the underwater formations, marveling at the stalactites and stalagmites that adorned the cave.

After my swim, I decided to try another activity that Fazenda Pratinha offers: the zipline. I soared above the river, taking in panoramic views of the landscape. It was a thrilling experience, and I couldn't help but laugh with delight. I could imagine Liesel loving this too; she's such an adventurous little girl. Maybe next time, I’ll bring her along for a mother-daughter trip.

Before leaving Pratinha, I indulged in a refreshing cup of cappuccino at the Pratinha cafeteria. They are known for adding licuri, a local nut, and using specially selected coffee beans. Sitting there, sipping my cappuccino and watching people enjoy the various activities, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. It had been a full day of adventure, beauty, and connection with nature.

On my way back to Lençóis, I stopped by Sangue Bom Brechó & Artesanato - Presentes, suculentas e lembranças., a local shop I had spotted earlier. I wanted to pick up a souvenir to remind me of my time here. The shop was filled with unique handmade crafts and vintage clothing. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl that I knew would look perfect in our kitchen in Bamberg. It was a small piece of Chapada Diamantina to bring back home.

As I write this, sitting on the veranda of my pousada, I can't help but smile. Today was a reminder of the simple joys in life: a challenging hike, a refreshing swim, delicious food, and unique finds. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Poço Encantado and Toca da Onça, and I'm already excited for what those adventures will bring. Perhaps I'll end the day with a visit to Cervejaria Artesanal Chapada. For now, though, I'm content to savor the memories of today and dream of the adventures yet to come.

I’m so grateful for this solo journey. It's allowed me to reconnect with myself and appreciate the beauty of the world in a way that I haven't been able to do in a while. Sometimes, stepping outside of your comfort zone and embracing the unknown is the best way to discover what truly matters. I encourage you all to do the same, whether it's a trip to a far-off land or simply exploring a new park in your own city. You never know what treasures you might find.

And on that note, I bid you goodnight from Chapada Diamantina. Until tomorrow, happy travels!

P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to find a local SIM card, so I should be able to post more photos and videos on social media tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Oh, and I really need to remember to buy more sunscreen. My South African skin is definitely feeling the Brazilian sun!
