A Whirlwind of Senses
My first day in Morocco was a vibrant tapestry of experiences, a sensory overload in the best possible way. From the moment I stepped off the plane, I was enveloped in a world so different from my quiet life in Delft. The colors, the sounds, the smells – it was a feast for the senses, and I couldn't wait to dive in. Today was all about contrasts: the bustling city of Marrakesh, the stark beauty of the Agafay Desert, and the lush greenery of the Ourika Valley. It was a day of firsts, a day of wonder, and a day that solidified my love for solo travel.

The adventure began in Marrakesh.

Stepping into the city felt like entering another world. The air was thick with the scent of spices, the sounds of bartering filled the narrow streets, and the vibrant colors of the souks assaulted my senses. I started my day with a traditional Moroccan breakfast at Cafe Restaurant TILILA GARDEN.

The cafe was a peaceful haven amidst the city's chaos, and the breakfast of fresh bread, olives, and mint tea was the perfect way to start the day. Sipping the sweet tea, I watched as the city slowly came to life, vendors setting up their stalls and locals hurrying to work. It was a fascinating glimpse into everyday Moroccan life.

After breakfast, I dove headfirst into the souks. Navigating the labyrinthine alleyways was an adventure in itself, each turn revealing a new treasure trove of handicrafts, textiles, and spices. I haggled for a beautiful hand-woven scarf, the vendor and I engaging in a playful dance of offers and counteroffers until we finally reached a price we both agreed on. It was a fun and exhilarating experience, and I walked away with a unique souvenir and a deeper appreciation for Moroccan craftsmanship.

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.

Next on the agenda was La Rosa Agafay, a desert experience just outside Marrakech.

The drive there was an adventure in itself, the landscape transforming from bustling city streets to arid desert plains. Arriving at La Rosa Agafay, I was immediately struck by the stark beauty of the Agafay Desert. Unlike the rolling sand dunes of the Sahara, the Agafay is a rocky, moon-like landscape, its vastness stretching out to the horizon. It was a surreal and awe-inspiring sight, a world away from the lush green landscapes I'm used to in the Netherlands.

I spent the afternoon exploring the desert, riding a camel across the rocky terrain and feeling like a modern-day Lawrence of Arabia. The camel was surprisingly comfortable, its gentle swaying motion lulling me into a state of peaceful contemplation. As we trekked through the desert, I marveled at the silence, broken only by the soft padding of the camel's feet. It was a welcome respite from the noise and chaos of Marrakech, a chance to connect with nature and find some inner peace.

After the camel ride, I indulged in a delicious Moroccan lunch at La Rosa Agafay, savoring the flavors of tagine and couscous while watching the sun slowly sink below the horizon. The desert sunset was a breathtaking spectacle, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a magical moment, one that I'll cherish for years to come.

Leaving the desert behind, I continued my journey to the Ourika Valley, a lush oasis nestled in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. The drive was scenic, the road winding its way through Berber villages and alongside gushing rivers. Arriving in the Ourika Valley, I was immediately struck by the contrast to the arid desert landscape. Here, the air was cooler and fresher, the landscape lush and green. It was a welcome change, a reminder of the diversity and beauty of Morocco.

I stopped for lunch at Chez Larbi Ourika Restaurant Maison d'hôtes, a charming guesthouse and restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine and warm hospitality.

The restaurant was nestled in a beautiful garden, surrounded by flowers and trees, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. I savored a delicious tagine, the flavors rich and complex, and chatted with the friendly staff, learning about their lives and traditions. It was a truly immersive cultural experience, one that I won't soon forget.

After lunch, I explored the village of Ourika, wandering through its narrow streets and soaking up the local atmosphere. I visited Ourika Chic, a local shop selling traditional Moroccan clothing and handicrafts.

I bought a beautiful kaftan, its intricate embroidery a testament to the skill and artistry of Moroccan artisans. It was a perfect reminder of my time in the Ourika Valley, a piece of Moroccan culture that I could take home with me.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Restaurant Timalizen for dinner.

The restaurant was located on a hilltop, offering stunning views of the valley below. I enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled meats and vegetables, savoring the flavors of Moroccan cuisine while watching the stars slowly appear in the night sky. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a chance to reflect on all that I had seen and experienced.

The intense heat of August in Marrakech was definitely something to consider. Daytime temperatures soared, making it essential to stay hydrated and seek shade whenever possible. I made sure to carry a reusable water bottle with me at all times, refilling it whenever I had the chance. I also wore light, loose-fitting clothing and a hat to protect myself from the sun. Despite the heat, I found that the evenings were quite pleasant, the temperature dropping to a comfortable level. This made it the perfect time to explore the city and enjoy the local nightlife.

Looking back on my first day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. I experienced so much in such a short amount of time, from the bustling souks of Marrakech to the serene Agafay Desert and the lush Ourika Valley. It was a day of contrasts, a day of cultural immersion, and a day that solidified my love for solo travel. As I settle into my accommodation for the night, I can't help but feel excited about what tomorrow holds. I'm planning to explore the Ourika Valley Waterfalls and the bio-aromatique de l'Ourika Garden. I might even treat myself to a relaxing evening at LHWISS CAFE FOOD. Morocco, you have already captured my heart!

One thing I did forget, though, was a portable phone charger. Relying on finding outlets throughout the day was a bit stressful, and I definitely need to remember that for future trips. Also, sunscreen! The Moroccan sun is no joke, and I'm already feeling a bit of a burn. Note to self: reapply often!

I'm also reminded of how much Pieter would have loved today. He always appreciates the blend of city exploration and natural beauty, and I know he would have enjoyed haggling in the souks just as much as I did. I'll have to bring him back here someday. I can already picture us cycling through the Ourika Valley, stopping at local cafes and soaking up the Moroccan sunshine.

As I drift off to sleep, I am filled with a sense of anticipation for the days ahead. Morocco, you have already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what other wonders you have in store. This solo journey is turning out to be exactly what I needed: a chance to reconnect with myself, to explore a new culture, and to embrace the unknown.
