First Steps on the Fisherman's Trail

After months of anticipation, our Costa Vicentina adventure has finally begun! Leaving Delft behind, Pieter and I, along with our friends, traded the familiar Dutch landscapes for the promise of Portugal's dramatic coastline. As a sustainability consultant, I'm always drawn to regions that prioritize eco-friendly tourism, and Costa Vicentina, with its unspoiled nature and commitment to conservation, felt like the perfect fit. Today was all about immersing ourselves in the raw beauty of the Rota Vicentina. Trilho de pescadores, specifically the famed Trilho dos Pescadores, and soaking in the unique atmosphere of this coastal paradise.

Our day started early with a hearty breakfast at A Choupana in Vila Nova de Milfontes. This charming seaside restaurant offered the perfect fuel for our hike, with a delightful array of pastries and strong coffee. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of the ocean, and the promise of a day filled with exploration hung in the balance. After breakfast we hit the road, ready to explore the Fisherman's Trail.

The Rota Vicentina's Trilho dos Pescadores, or Fisherman's Trail, was everything I had imagined and more. The trail snaked along the coastline, treating us to breathtaking views of rugged cliffs, hidden beaches, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The landscape was painted in hues of green and gold, with the vibrant wildflowers adding pops of color to the scene. As we walked, we were serenaded by the crashing waves and the calls of seabirds, a symphony of nature that filled our senses. I felt a sense of peace wash over me. Being surrounded by such raw, untouched beauty was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of city life. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving these natural spaces for future generations.

The beauty of the Fisherman's Trail lies not just in its stunning vistas, but in the sense of connection it fosters with nature and the simple joys of exploration.

Our first major stop was Farol Cabo Sardão, a historic lighthouse perched on the westernmost point of the Alentejo coast. The lighthouse itself was a striking sight, a white tower topped with a red lantern, standing tall against the backdrop of the endless ocean. What struck me most was the unique location of the tower, built on the land side of the annex, a detail that apparently has sparked some debate. The views from the lighthouse were simply mesmerizing. We could see the coastline stretching out in both directions, the cliffs plunging dramatically into the sea. We even spotted several white storks nesting on the cliffs below, a unique sight as these birds typically nest inland.

After soaking in the views and snapping countless photos, we continued our hike along the trail. The path was challenging at times, with steep ascents and descents, but the stunning scenery kept us motivated. We passed through small fishing villages, where we caught glimpses of local life and the traditional ways of the coast. The salty air, the sound of the waves, and the warmth of the sun created a sensory experience that was both invigorating and calming. I felt grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with Pieter and our friends, their laughter and camaraderie adding to the joy of the day.

Lunch was at Restaurante Costa Vicentina, and was a welcome treat after our morning hike. We indulged in fresh seafood, savoring the flavors of the ocean. I opted for the grilled sardines, a local specialty, while Pieter tried the octopus stew. Both were delicious, and we left feeling satisfied and energized for the rest of our day.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to take a break and unwind at Bar da Praia in Almograve. This laid-back beach bar was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the coastal atmosphere. We ordered some refreshing drinks and sat on the terrace, enjoying the stunning views of the beach and the ocean. The bar had a relaxed, bohemian vibe, with music playing softly in the background and people chatting and laughing. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

For dinner, we chose A Barca Tranquitanas in Zambujeira do Mar. This restaurant, located near the fishing harbor, is known for its fresh seafood and traditional Alentejo dishes. We started our meal with some local delicacies, including barnacles and whelks, before moving on to the main courses. I decided to try the cuttlefish cooked in the style of the restaurant, while Pieter opted for the fish stew. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and we savored every bite. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to end our first day on the Costa Vicentina.

As I sit here writing this, reflecting on our first day, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. The Costa Vicentina has already captured my heart with its raw beauty, its commitment to sustainability, and its warm, welcoming people. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings as we explore more of this stunning coastline. Tomorrow we plan to explore the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina and Praia da Amoreira. I am also excited to check out the Vicentino Wine Shop. I am looking forward to sharing our adventures with you all. Until then, *adeus* from Portugal!

I think back to something I once read by the great John Muir, and it feels especially relevant now:

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

And as I drift off to sleep, I'm already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures, fueled by the fresh sea air and the promise of more hidden gems waiting to be discovered along the Costa Vicentina.
