A Day of Discovery

Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the raw beauty of Costa Vicentina. Leaving behind the cozy familiarity of our eco-lodge, Pieter and I, along with our friends, set out to explore the region's natural park and indulge in its local flavors. It was a day filled with breathtaking vistas, delightful culinary experiences, and the simple joy of sharing it all with great company.

Our first destination was the famed Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina [i, 26]. As a sustainability consultant, I’m always drawn to places that celebrate and protect their natural environment, and this park certainly didn't disappoint. The park stretches for over 100 km, boasting a diverse range of coastal habitats. The dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and unique wildlife create a haven for nature enthusiasts.

We spent a good portion of the morning hiking along the Rota Vicentina, a network of trails that wind through the park. The views were simply stunning. The rugged cliffs plunged into the turquoise waters of the Atlantic, creating a mesmerizing contrast of colors and textures. Though November isn't exactly the peak season, the weather was mild enough to enjoy the hike comfortably, with a refreshing breeze coming off the ocean. I made sure everyone had on eco-friendly sunscreen, a must-have even on a cloudy day. I was kicking myself for forgetting my light rain jacket, though; the weather can change quickly here.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Along the way, we spotted various bird species, including the white stork, which amazingly builds its nests on the seashore rocks – a truly unique sight. I was also thrilled to see otters in their marine habitat, a rare treat in Europe. Pieter, ever the enthusiastic photographer, captured the stunning landscapes, while I soaked in the tranquility of the surroundings, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such unspoiled beauty. I am glad I remembered to bring my camera, as I almost forgot it in our haste to leave this morning!

After our invigorating hike, we drove to Praia da Amoreira, a beach known for its unique landscape where the river meets the sea. The weather in Amoreira in November is mild, with average temperatures around 16°C, but can be wet. The beach is framed by dunes and cliffs, offering a sheltered spot perfect for a relaxing afternoon. Some of us even braved the chilly water for a quick dip. I preferred to stroll along the shore, collecting seashells and marveling at the intricate patterns in the sand. The area is also a surfing spot. It was the perfect place to unwind and soak up the coastal atmosphere.

Lunchtime found us at Pont'a Pé in Aljezur, a charming restaurant tucked away beneath the main entrance. The restaurant exudes rustic charm with its beautifully adorned interior. We sat on the terrace overlooking the river, enjoying the pleasant ambiance. The food was nothing short of extraordinary, with each dish leaving a lasting impression. The staff was friendly and shared insights about Portuguese culture. I ordered the grilled octopus paired with sweet potatoes, a regional specialty, and it was cooked to perfection. Pieter opted for the sea bream, which the server deboned with impressive skill. We savored every bite, accompanied by a crisp Vinho Verde. The traditional Portuguese cuisine was delightful, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the local wine scene. We visited Vicentino Wine Shop, enticed by its reputation for showcasing the region's viticultural heritage. The shop offered an inviting ambiance, and the staff was knowledgeable, eager to share their expertise. We sampled a variety of local wines, learning about the unique characteristics of the Alentejo terroir. I was particularly drawn to the Vicentino wines, which are produced in vineyards located within the natural park. The proximity to the sea, combined with the constant sea winds, gives these wines a distinctive freshness and minerality. We purchased a few bottles to take back to our eco-lodge, planning to enjoy them later while reminiscing about our day.

For dinner, we chose Sabores do Monte - Restaurante, drawn by its reputation for traditional Alentejana cuisine. The quiet atmosphere and good decor added to the experience. The restaurant offered a great variety of dishes at affordable prices. I opted for the black pork chops, a regional specialty, while Pieter chose the codfish. Each dish was prepared with fresh ingredients and bursting with flavor. The portions were generous, and we left feeling completely satisfied. The cozy ambiance and friendly service made it a memorable dining experience.

Before heading back to our eco-lodge, we made one last stop at O Tarro, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed a round of local craft beers, chatting with the friendly locals and soaking in the laid-back vibe of the town. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post from the comfort of our eco-lodge, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. Costa Vicentina has captured my heart with its stunning natural beauty, its delicious local cuisine, and its warm, welcoming people. Sharing it all with Pieter and our friends has made it even more special.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the region's history and culture with a visit to the Museu do Mar e da Terra da Carrapateira and Ponta da Atalaia. I’m excited to uncover more hidden gems and share them with you all. Until then, good night from Costa Vicentina!
