Aljezur: Where History Meets the Sea
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the raw beauty of the Algarve coast with the echoes of centuries past. Aljezur, a town that seems to have grown organically from the landscape, offered a perfect mix of relaxation, exploration, and culinary delights. Pieter and I, along with our friends, set out to uncover its secrets, and it didn't disappoint.
Our morning began with the promise of sun and surf at Praia da Arrifana. The drive there was a scenic treat, winding through rolling hills dotted with cork trees and the occasional sleepy village. As we approached the coast, the air grew thick with the scent of salt and the anticipation of the ocean's embrace. Arrifana is nestled at the foot of dramatic cliffs, providing a sheltered cove that's renowned for its waves. Though I'm more of a spectator than a surfer, I could appreciate the energy and skill of those riding the swells. Pieter, ever the adventurer, rented a board and joined them, while I opted for a leisurely stroll along the shore with the others. The beach itself is a crescent of golden sand, remarkably clean and inviting. The cliffs provide a natural amphitheater, amplifying the sound of the waves and creating a sense of being completely immersed in nature. Even in November, the sun was warm enough to bask in, and the sea, though bracing, was tempting enough for a quick dip. I'm glad I packed my eco-friendly sunscreen; protecting my skin while minimizing my impact on the environment is always a priority. We spent a good few hours here, simply enjoying the rhythm of the ocean and the camaraderie of our little group.

For breakfast, we stopped at Carvalhal Beach Nature. This spot was perfect, offering light meals and refreshing drinks right on the beach. I had a delicious salad, while Pieter opted for a hearty burger. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the views were simply stunning. It's the kind of place where you can easily lose track of time, soaking in the sun and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. It was framed in a valley of the Parque Natural da Costa Vicentina, making it a perfect place to spend the day surrounded by nature.

The beauty of Aljezur lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in the way it seamlessly blends history, nature, and the simple joys of life.
After our beach excursion, we decided to delve into Aljezur's past with a visit to the Castle of Aljezur. Perched atop a hill overlooking the town, the castle offered panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The structure itself is a testament to the region's rich history, with remnants of Bronze and Iron Age settlements, as well as Moorish and Christian influences. As we walked through the ruins, I couldn't help but imagine the lives of those who had stood guard here centuries ago, defending their homes and way of life. The castle was erected by the Arabs in the 10th century. Although the castle is not well preserved, visitors can enjoy the wonderful view. The wind was strong up there, carrying with it the scent of the nearby sea and the whispers of history. I found myself reflecting on the layers of civilization that have shaped this region, each leaving its mark on the land and its people. Despite its state of disrepair, the castle exuded a sense of timelessness, a reminder that even in the face of change, some things endure.

Lunch was at Paraíso do Mar, a restaurant right on Amoreira Beach. The location was idyllic, with an outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean. We indulged in fresh seafood, grilled to perfection and seasoned with local herbs. I savored every bite, knowing that the fish had likely been caught just hours before. The restaurant had a family-friendly atmosphere, and the staff were warm and welcoming. Pieter and I shared a bottle of local wine, toasting to the beauty of the Algarve and the joy of traveling with friends. From the restaurant, the Praia da Amoreira was visible.

As the day drew to a close, we sought out a spot to enjoy a sundowner. Esplanada do Mar, a bar with stunning ocean views, proved to be the perfect choice. We sipped on local wines and watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with locals and tourists alike sharing stories and laughter. I felt a sense of contentment, knowing that we had made the most of our day in Aljezur. The bar is open from 9:00 to 24:00.

Dinner was at O Sacas, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. Located near a small fishing harbor, it had a rustic charm that immediately appealed to me. The fish comes directly from the auction, guaranteeing its freshness and quality. I opted for the grilled sea bass, while Pieter chose the clams with beans. The food was simple but delicious, showcasing the best of local ingredients. The restaurant had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, and the staff were attentive and friendly. As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures and made plans for tomorrow.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Ribat da Atalaia and perhaps even try our luck at spotting some dolphins on a Sealife Dolphin Watching tour. We'll also be stopping by the Mercado Municipal de Aljezur to pick up some local treats. I'm particularly excited about the Ribat da Atalaia, as I'm fascinated by Moorish history and architecture. Plus, who can resist the charm of a local market? I'm hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back to Delft, something to remind me of our time in this beautiful corner of Portugal.
Tonight, as I write this, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had today. Aljezur has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding you of the simple things that truly matter: good company, good food, and the beauty of the natural world. It's a place I know I'll carry with me long after we've left its shores. And as I drift off to sleep, I can still hear the sound of the waves, a lullaby that speaks of peace, adventure, and the enduring magic of travel. I'm also thankful I didn't forget any of my trip essentials today, though I still wish I had remembered to pack my light rain jacket – the evenings can get a bit chilly here! But hey, that's just part of the adventure, right? Good night from Costa Vicentina!
