Exploring the Majestic Ausangate Trek in Peru
Day 4: Chasing Rainbows and Soaking in Bliss: A Day Among Ausangate's Wonders
Hike through the stunning 7 Lagunas of Ausangate and unwind in Pacchanta's hot springs. A perfect blend of adventure and relaxation!
Seven Lakes and Steamy Dreams
Today was nothing short of magical, a perfect blend of invigorating adventure and soothing relaxation amidst the stunning landscapes of the Ausangate region. The crisp mountain air, the vibrant turquoise lakes, and the promise of thermal waters made it a day to remember. It’s moments like these that remind me why Pieter and I traded our cozy Delft apartment for the open road, seeking out the world's hidden gems.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at MAP Café in Cusco. Fueled by strong Peruvian coffee and delicious local pastries, we set off early, eager to conquer the famed 7 Lagunas of Ausangate.

The drive to Pacchanta, the starting point for the trek, was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of the Andes. October in Cusco means warmer temperatures, which is great for hiking, but also a higher chance of rain, so we made sure to pack our ponchos.
As we started our ascent, the sheer beauty of the landscape took my breath away. The trail, while challenging due to the altitude, was well worth every step. The air was thin, and I definitely felt the burn in my thighs, but the views… oh, the views! Each lake boasted a unique shade of turquoise, framed by the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Ausangate range. Pieter, ever the supportive husband, kept me motivated with his witty banter and shared snacks. I must admit, I was missing my portable phone charger, as I was running low on battery and couldn't take as many pictures as I wanted.
We spent a good five to six hours exploring the seven lagoons, each more stunning than the last. The hike itself was moderately challenging, with some steep ascents and descents, but nothing too strenuous. It's crucial to acclimatize to the altitude before attempting this trek, which is why we spent a few days in Cusco beforehand. I was so glad we did, as altitude sickness can really put a damper on things. We even saw some Andean flora and high-altitude birds, adding to the enchantment of the experience.
The beauty of the Ausangate region lies not only in its stunning landscapes but also in its ability to connect you with nature on a profound level.
By the time we completed the trek, my legs were definitely feeling it, but the thought of soaking in the Aguas Termales Pacchanta kept me going.

We made our way to the hot springs, eager to soothe our tired muscles. And let me tell you, it was pure bliss! The thermal waters, heated by the volcanic activity beneath the earth, were the perfect temperature for relaxation. As I sank into the warm, mineral-rich water, surrounded by the towering Andes, I felt all the stress and tension melt away. Pieter and I chatted about our favorite moments from the hike, laughing and reminiscing about the stunning views.
The Aguas Termales Pacchanta consist of seven outdoor pools, each with varying temperatures. I spent most of my time alternating between the hottest and coolest pools, enjoying the therapeutic contrast. The locals believe that the waters have healing properties, and I must say, I felt incredibly rejuvenated after my soak.
After our relaxing soak, we enjoyed a late lunch at Yaku Restaurant, savoring traditional Peruvian cuisine.

The flavors were incredible, a perfect complement to the day's adventures. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains, we made our way back to Cusco, our hearts full of gratitude for the incredible experiences we had shared.
Before heading back to our cozy room at Cusco Plaza Saphi, we decided to check out The Space Club Cusco for a nightcap.

It was a fun way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The energy of the club was infectious, and we enjoyed mingling with fellow travelers and locals alike.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're excited to explore more of the Ausangate region, including the Área de Conservación Regional Ausangate and the Mano de Ausanagate. We'll start the day with breakfast at Cuchara de Palo Restaurant before venturing out. I'm also hoping to find a travel adapter, as I realized I had forgotten to pack one, and it's been a struggle keeping my camera and phone charged. Maybe we'll have some time to check out EKEKOS SAN BLAS -art & COLORS, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs before dinner at Senzo.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of awe and gratitude. The Ausangate region is truly a magical place, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and outdoor adventure. It's experiences like these that make travel so rewarding, reminding me of the importance of connecting with nature and embracing the unknown. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow holds even more adventures in this incredible corner of the world. The cooler temperatures at night definitely make me appreciate having warm layers. I also heard that the Fiesta de San Francisco is coming up soon, so I'm excited to see if we can experience some of the local culture and traditions.
