Embracing the Majesty of Ausangate

Today was a day of sheer, unadulterated awe. As a sustainability consultant, I'm used to appreciating the intricate balance of ecosystems, but nothing could have prepared me for the raw, untamed beauty of the Peruvian Andes. Pieter and I, along with our fellow trekkers, ventured deeper into the Ausangate region, and every step was a testament to nature's grandeur.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Inkaterra in Cusco. I opted for a traditional quinoa porridge, fueling up for the physical demands that lay ahead. Pieter, ever the adventurous one, tried the local coca tea, hoping it would further help with the altitude. I must admit, adjusting to the elevation has been a bit challenging, even after a couple of days in Cusco. I've been diligent about staying hydrated and taking it slow, mindful of the thinner air. It’s a good reminder that sustainable travel isn’t just about environmental impact; it’s also about respecting your own body and its limits.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off towards Nevado Ausangate. The mountain loomed large, its snow-capped peak piercing the clear blue sky. October is a mixed month in Ausangate, with mostly dry weather, but the potential for rain is increasing. The temperatures during the day usually range from 1°C to 20°C, making it ideal for worry-free hiking. As we ascended, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of rocky terrain, interspersed with patches of hardy vegetation. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of earth and distant snow. I couldn't help but feel a sense of profound connection to the natural world, a feeling that always renews my commitment to sustainability and conservation.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

Our trek led us to Campo Base Ausangate, a testament to the raw beauty of the landscape. As we hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on how different this was from my usual life in Delft. While I love cycling through the Dutch countryside and visiting local farmers' markets, there's something about the scale and drama of the Andes that puts everything into perspective. It’s a humbling experience, reminding me of the power and resilience of nature. This trek is definitely testing my limits, both physically and mentally, but I am relishing every moment.

Lunch was at Pachapapa, a charming restaurant in Cusco known for its authentic Peruvian cuisine. We savored traditional dishes like alpaca skewers and causa, all while enjoying the lively atmosphere and live harp music. Pieter, always eager to immerse himself in local culture, even tried a bite of guinea pig, a local delicacy. I admired his adventurous spirit, though I politely declined. Instead, I focused on the quinoa soup, a hearty and nutritious dish that perfectly complemented the day's activities. Pachapapa is conveniently located in Centro Histórico, making it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the rich history and culture of Cusco.

After lunch, we visited TEXTILES POMATAYLLA, a local shop showcasing the incredible artistry of Ayacucho weavers. I was mesmerized by the intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the textiles, each piece telling a story of tradition and craftsmanship. I ended up purchasing a beautifully woven shawl made from baby alpaca wool, a perfect souvenir to remind me of this incredible journey. It’s important to me that my travels support local communities and sustainable practices, and I felt good knowing that my purchase was contributing to the livelihoods of these talented artisans.

As the day drew to a close, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Inti House in Cusco. The restaurant prides itself on revaluing agricultural products from local communities, which aligns perfectly with my sustainability values. I savored a flavorful dish of trout ceviche, while Pieter opted for the traditional cuy (guinea pig) baked in Cusco. The guinea pig meat has great health benefits, high in protein, especially for people who have high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. As we ate, we shared stories and laughter with our fellow trekkers, forging bonds that transcended language and culture.

Back at our cozy room at Cusco Plaza Saphi, I reflected on the day's experiences. The majestic beauty of Nevado Ausangate, the vibrant culture of Cusco, and the warmth of the Peruvian people had all left an indelible mark on my soul. I felt grateful for the opportunity to witness such incredible landscapes and connect with such a rich and ancient culture. It’s experiences like these that fuel my passion for sustainable travel and inspire me to continue advocating for responsible tourism practices.

Tomorrow, we will be venturing to the 7 lagunas Ausangate and the Aguas Termales Pacchanta. I am excited for another day of adventure and discovery, eager to see what wonders await us in the heart of the Andes. I am looking forward to soaking in the Aguas Termales Pacchanta after another day of trekking. I've heard wonderful things about the natural hot springs, and I can't wait to relax and rejuvenate amidst the stunning mountain scenery.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a sense of profound gratitude for this incredible journey. The Ausangate Trek is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a spiritual awakening, a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our planet, and a call to action to protect it for future generations.
