A Cultural Sojourn in Florence: Art, History, and Tuscan Flavors
Day 1: Florentine First Impressions: Art, History, and a Dash of Unexpected Charm
Join Jiří and Lena's first day in Florence as they explore the Uffizi, Piazza della Signoria, and savor Tuscan delights.
A Whirlwind Start in Florence
After months of planning, Lena and I finally touched down in Florence! The air was crisp, a typical January chill that nipped at our noses as we stepped off the plane. Our taxi ride to Palazzo Graziani was quick, giving us a tantalizing glimpse of the city's terracotta rooftops and winding streets. We quickly settled into our charming accommodation and then ventured out, eager to soak in the Florentine atmosphere. Today marked the beginning of our Florentine adventure, and what a start it was.

Our first stop was the world-renowned Uffizi Gallery. I had pre-booked tickets, thankfully, as the line snaked around the building even in January. Stepping inside was like entering a different world. Room after room, we were surrounded by masterpieces of the Renaissance. Botticelli's “Birth of Venus” was even more breathtaking in person, and I found myself captivated by the intricate details of Leonardo da Vinci's works. Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly fascinated by the use of color and perspective in the paintings. It was amazing to see so many works that I had studied in books back in Czechia. I never thought I'd see them in person.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
After a few hours immersed in art, we emerged into the bustling Piazza della Signoria. The square was alive with activity, even in the winter chill. Street performers entertained the crowds, and the imposing Palazzo Vecchio stood guard over the scene. We admired the Fountain of Neptune, its intricate sculptures a testament to the city's artistic heritage. The Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air sculpture gallery, was a particular highlight. The statues, with their dramatic poses and exquisite detail, were captivating. I was particularly drawn to Cellini's Perseus holding the head of Medusa; its bronze surface seemed to gleam even on a cloudy day. Lena was fascinated by the history of the Loggia dei Lanzi, learning that it once housed Cosimo I's German mercenary pikemen. It's amazing how much history is packed into every corner of this city.

Lunch beckoned, and we made our way to La Buchetta Food & Wine Restaurant, a charming spot recommended by several blogs I had read. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with exposed brick walls and warm lighting. We started with a cheese tasting, a delightful assortment of local cheeses served with cherry tomatoes. For our main courses, Lena and I both opted for the gnocchi with pork cheek – a recommendation from our waiter. The gnocchi was divine, the pork cheek melting in our mouths. Paired with a glass of local Chianti, it was the perfect Tuscan lunch.

After lunch, we strolled back to Piazza della Signoria to take in the sights one last time before the afternoon light faded away. We walked under the Loggia dei Lanzi again, admiring the sculptures. It was constructed between 1376 and 1382 by Benci di Cione and Simone Talenti, designed to hold public ceremonies, such as the swearing into office of the Gonfaloniers and the Priors. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to witness those ceremonies centuries ago. We observed one of the marble lions, learning that one dates back to Roman times, while the other was sculpted by Flaminio Vacca in 1598. Lena took several photos, capturing the intricate details of the statues and the overall ambiance of the square.
As evening approached, we decided to indulge in a traditional Florentine dinner. Il Santo Bevitore, another restaurant I had researched, was our destination. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere. We started with the chicken liver terrine, a Tuscan specialty that was rich and flavorful. For our main courses, I opted for the roasted duck leg, while Lena chose the potato gnocchi with deer ragout and black cherry sauce. Both dishes were exceptional, showcasing the hearty flavors of Tuscan cuisine. I paired my duck with a glass of Vin Santo, a classic Tuscan dessert wine, while Lena enjoyed a local red. The perfect ending to a perfect meal.

To cap off our first day, we decided to experience a bit of Florence's nightlife. Rasputin, a speakeasy-style bar, was our chosen destination. Finding the bar was an adventure in itself, as it was hidden behind an unmarked door. Ringing the doorbell, we were greeted and ushered into a dimly lit, intimate space. The bar was known for its extensive whisky collection and expertly crafted cocktails. I opted for a classic Old Fashioned, while Lena chose a more adventurous concoction recommended by the bartender. The drinks were expertly prepared, and the atmosphere was sophisticated and mysterious. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Florence.

As we walked back to Palazzo Graziani, the city was quiet and peaceful. The Ponte Vecchio glowed in the moonlight, its reflection shimmering in the Arno River. We reminisced about the day's adventures, marveling at the beauty and history that Florence had to offer. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto's Bell Tower, and the Baptistery of St. John. I have heard the Duomo is breathtaking, and Lena is keen to climb Giotto's Bell Tower for panoramic views of the city. We also plan to visit Mio Concept Store, a shop I found that has handmade leather goods. I'm sure Lena will find something she likes there. Despite forgetting my umbrella and the Italian power adapter back in Munich, our first day in Florence was a resounding success. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
