Day 1: Renaissance Awakening in Florence
Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, has always been a city I've dreamt of exploring. Today, that dream became a vivid reality. The crisp February air, a stark contrast to Toronto's winter chill, invigorated me as I stepped out, ready to lose myself in the city's timeless beauty. This solo adventure is all about soaking in the culture, capturing the essence of Florence through my lens, and, of course, indulging in its culinary wonders.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Gilli. Established in 1733, this historic café exudes old-world charm. The elegant interior, with its marble countertops and frescoed ceilings, transported me to a different era. I savored a cappuccino and a flaky pastry, watching the city awaken through the café's large windows. It's moments like these, observing the rhythm of a new place, that truly fuel my soul.
Fuelled and ready, I made my way to the Piazza della Signoria, the heart of Florentine political life for centuries. The square was bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists all drawn to its historical significance. The imposing Palazzo Vecchio, with its towering Arnolfo tower, dominated the square. I spent a good hour simply wandering around, admiring the sculptures, including a replica of Michelangelo's David. The original, I knew, awaited me at the Galleria dell’Accademia tomorrow.

It was hard to imagine that just a week before my arrival, the Piazza had been the ending point for the Florence Carnival Parade, with musical shows, jugglers and allegorical masks. February is certainly a month where Florence embraces love in all its forms!
To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam on lands remote, To travel is to live.
Next on my list was the iconic Ponte Vecchio. As I approached the bridge, the sight of the Arno River shimmering under the winter sun took my breath away. The Ponte Vecchio, with its shops built along it, is unique. Originally home to butchers, tanners, and farmers, the shops are now occupied by jewelers, art dealers, and souvenir sellers. I strolled across the bridge, admiring the intricate craftsmanship of the jewelry on display. It was fascinating to imagine the bridge's history, from its Roman origins to its survival of World War II.

I then ventured inside the Palazzo Vecchio. The sheer grandeur of the building was overwhelming. I explored the various halls, each adorned with stunning frescoes and sculptures. The Salone dei Cinquecento, the largest and most impressive room in the palace, left me speechless. It was amazing to learn that earlier in the month, the Salone had hosted the Gran Ballo Regine a Palazzo, as part of the Carnevale di Firenze celebrations. The palace truly felt like a living museum, a testament to Florence's rich history and artistic legacy. I even learned that until January 26th, the Palazzo was hosting the Exhibition Michelangelo and Power, which displayed more than fifty works, sculptures, paintings, drawings, autograph letters and plaster casts from the artist.

For lunch, I had made a reservation at Il Santo Bevitore, a restaurant recommended by several friends back in Toronto. Located in the Oltrarno district, the restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I ordered the *pici cacio e pepe*, a traditional Tuscan pasta dish. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the *cacio e pepe* sauce was rich and flavorful. It was the perfect meal to warm me up on a chilly day. I had read a review that mentioned the food was so hearty, that being in a cozy and indoors restaurant, with dark wood furniture and candlelight just felt right.

As the afternoon waned, I decided to explore the Oltrarno district further. This neighborhood, known for its artisan workshops, had a distinct charm. I wandered through the narrow streets, peeking into leather shops, ceramic studios, and art galleries. I even stumbled upon a small workshop where a craftsman was creating intricate mosaics. It was inspiring to see the passion and dedication of these artisans, keeping traditional crafts alive in the heart of Florence.
For dinner, I had booked a table at La Giostra, a restaurant rumored to be a favorite among celebrities and Florentine royals. The restaurant, dimly lit and decorated with twinkling lights, exuded a romantic ambiance. I was greeted warmly by the staff and seated at a cozy table. I decided to try the *tortelli di patate al tartufo*, potato-filled pasta with truffle sauce. The dish was exquisite, the truffle aroma intoxicating. It was a truly memorable culinary experience.

To cap off my first day in Florence, I decided to venture into the city's nightlife. Based on a recommendation from a fellow traveler, I sought out Rasputin, a hidden bar known for its expertly crafted cocktails. Finding the bar was an adventure in itself, located behind an unmarked door, I had to ring a bell to gain entry. Inside, the bar was dimly lit and decorated with vintage furniture, creating a speakeasy atmosphere. The bartender, a true mixologist, crafted me a bespoke cocktail based on my preferences. Sipping my drink, surrounded by the bar's intimate ambiance, I felt a sense of contentment. It was the perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, I plan to immerse myself further in Florence's art scene with visits to the Uffizi Gallery, the Galleria dell’Accademia, and the Opera del Duomo Museum. I am particularly excited to see Michelangelo's David in person and to explore the Uffizi's vast collection of Renaissance masterpieces. I'm also looking forward to trying Ristorante Santa Elisabetta for breakfast, Osteria dell'Enoteca for lunch, and Enoteca Pinchiorri for dinner.
As I write this, back in the comfort of my room at the Golden Tower Hotel & Spa, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore Florence on my own. The city has already captivated me with its beauty, history, and culinary delights. I am eager to see what tomorrow brings, to delve deeper into the heart of the Renaissance, and to continue capturing the essence of Florence through my lens. For now, *notte*!

It's funny, as I reflect on the day, how much Toronto feels like a world away. Olivia would have loved wandering the Ponte Vecchio with me, admiring the jewelry. I made a mental note to find a special piece for her before I leave. And I know she'd be fascinated by the artisan workshops in the Oltrarno district, her graphic designer's eye always drawn to craftsmanship and detail. Perhaps one day, we'll return together, sharing these Florentine experiences hand-in-hand.
For now, though, I'm embracing the solitude, the freedom to explore at my own pace, and the opportunity to connect with this city on a deeply personal level. Florence, *ti amo già*.
