Whispers of Faith and Flavors of Tomar

Today, the fifth day of our Portuguese adventure, was a blend of spiritual contemplation and delightful culinary experiences. Tomar continues to enchant Olivia and me with its serene beauty and rich history. It's days like these that remind me why we love to travel – to discover the soul of a place, one chapel and one meal at a time.

Our day began, as usual, with a hearty breakfast at Hotel Dos Templarios. The buffet spread was impressive, offering everything from fresh pastries to local cheeses and fruits. Fuelled up, we set out to explore the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Piedade. The morning air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of blooming flowers from the nearby gardens. The sun was shining, and the sky was clear, promising a beautiful day.

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, perched atop a hill overlooking Tomar, was our first destination. The sanctuary dates back to the 14th century and is a significant religious site for the locals. The climb up the 292 steps was a bit of a workout, but the views along the way were worth every step. Olivia and I took our time, pausing at the landings to catch our breath and admire the scenery. From each vantage point, Tomar unfolded beneath us, its terracotta rooftops and verdant landscapes creating a picturesque panorama.

Reaching the top, we were greeted by the simple yet elegant facade of the chapel. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Piedade exudes a sense of peace and tranquility. Inside, the chapel was adorned with blue and white geometric patterned tiles from the 17th century and a statue of the Virgin Mary. The interior was bathed in soft light filtering through the windows, creating a serene atmosphere. We spent some time in quiet reflection, appreciating the spiritual significance of the place. It was easy to see why this spot has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries.

Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.

Next on our itinerary was the Chapel of Santa Iria. This chapel, dedicated to the patron saint of Tomar, is steeped in legend. According to the stories, Santa Iria was a young devout woman who lived in the 7th century. Her beauty attracted unwanted attention, leading to false accusations and ultimately, her martyrdom. The chapel, built near the banks of the Nabão River, commemorates her life and sacrifice.

The Chapel of Santa Iria is a fascinating blend of architectural styles, reflecting its construction and renovation over several centuries. The Renaissance influences are evident in the portico and window, designed by Nicolau de Chanterene, while a Manueline door leads to the sacristy. Inside, the chapel features a rectangular nave covered by a coffered ceiling with painted ornaments. The walls are lined with tiles in a diamond pattern, adding to the chapel's unique charm. Olivia was particularly captivated by the story of Santa Iria and the serene atmosphere of the chapel.

For lunch, we decided to try Enigma - Hamburgueria Artesanal - Tomar. I had read great reviews about their artisanal burgers, and we were both in the mood for something casual and tasty. The restaurant was easy to find, located in the heart of Tomar. The interior was modern and inviting, with a relaxed atmosphere. We ordered a couple of their signature burgers, and they did not disappoint. The patties were juicy and flavorful, the buns were soft, and the toppings were fresh and creative. Olivia opted for the Natura burger, a vegetarian option, and was equally impressed. It's always a pleasure to find a place that caters to different dietary preferences without compromising on taste.

In the late afternoon, we decided to explore Arco Pub, a local bar known for its relaxed vibe and extensive drink selection. We sat at an outdoor table, enjoying the pleasant weather and the lively atmosphere. I opted for a local craft beer, while Olivia chose a glass of vinho verde, a light and refreshing Portuguese wine. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. We chatted, laughed, and soaked in the ambiance of Tomar.

For dinner, we ventured to Fernandos' Brewery, a popular spot recommended by several locals. The brewery is known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine and its own craft beers. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying their meals. We ordered a selection of dishes to share, including grilled sardines, pork with clams, and a hearty bean stew. Everything was delicious, cooked with fresh, local ingredients and bursting with flavor. The craft beers were also excellent, complementing the food perfectly. It was a truly authentic Portuguese dining experience.

As the evening drew to a close, we found ourselves back at Arco Pub for one last drink. The pub was buzzing with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. We enjoyed the lively atmosphere and the friendly banter, feeling like we were truly part of the Tomar community. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on the day, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the spiritual and culinary delights of Tomar. The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Piedade and the Chapel of Santa Iria offered moments of quiet reflection, while Enigma and Fernandos' Brewery delighted our taste buds with their delicious offerings. It's these kinds of experiences that make travel so rewarding.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Aqueduto and the Castle of Ourem. I'm particularly excited about the Aqueduto, as I've heard it offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Olivia is looking forward to exploring the Castle of Ourem, a medieval fortress with a rich history. We'll also be stopping by Nanda's gallery, a local shop, to see if we can find any unique souvenirs to take back home. It promises to be another day filled with exploration and discovery. Until then, boa noite from Tomar!

It's fascinating how each city has its own story, whispered through ancient stones and vibrant flavors. Tomar is indeed a treasure trove of history and culture, and I'm so glad Olivia and I are experiencing it together. The blend of sacred spaces and culinary delights has made this day unforgettable. Cheers to more adventures and discoveries!

As I sit here writing, I realize how much I've come to appreciate the simple things in life. A beautiful sunset, a delicious meal, a shared laugh – these are the moments that truly matter.
