Explore Almourol Castle's ancient walls and immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Seven Hills National Forest with family.
Echoes of Knights and Whispers of Nature
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of history and nature that truly captured the spirit of Tomar. It was a day where Olivia and I delved into the medieval past and embraced the tranquility of the Portuguese landscape, creating memories that I know we will cherish for years to come.
Our day began, as usual, with a delightful breakfast at Hotel Dos Templarios. The buffet spread was as inviting as ever, and I made sure to fuel up for the day’s adventures with some fresh pastries and strong coffee. Olivia opted for a lighter meal of fruit and yogurt, saving room for the culinary delights that awaited us later in the day.

With our stomachs satisfied, we set off to conquer our first destination: the legendary Almourol Castle. The drive to Vila Nova da Barquinha, where the boats to the castle depart, was scenic, with rolling hills and quaint villages dotting the landscape. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the Tagus River, where the imposing figure of Almourol Castle stood proudly on its rocky islet.

The boat ride to the castle was short but exhilarating. The Tagus River sparkled under the morning sun, and the fresh air filled our lungs. As we approached the castle, its ancient walls seemed to whisper tales of knights, battles, and centuries of history. It’s amazing to think that this castle has been standing since the 12th century, witnessing the rise and fall of empires.
Stepping onto the island felt like stepping back in time. The castle, with its nine circular towers and central keep, is a magnificent example of Templar military architecture. We explored the grounds, imagining what life must have been like for the knights who once called this place home. The views from the top of the castle were simply breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the Tagus River and the surrounding countryside. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment, but no image could truly do it justice.
Visiting Almourol Castle is like stepping into a fairy tale, where history and legend intertwine to create an unforgettable experience.
The history of Almourol Castle is as captivating as its appearance. Originally built during the Moorish era as a defensive stronghold, it was later taken over by the Knights Templar during the Reconquista. They rebuilt the castle in 1171, transforming it into a key part of their defensive network along the Tagus River. After the dissolution of the Templars in the 14th century, the castle was abandoned for a time but was later restored in the 19th century, giving it the romantic, fairy-tale appearance that we see today. Legend has it that the castle is haunted by a Moorish princess and a Templar knight who fell in love, their forbidden romance adding an extra layer of mystique to this already enchanting place. Olivia was particularly fascinated by this tale, and I could see her imagination running wild as we explored the castle’s nooks and crannies. I too felt a sense of wonder thinking about the history of the castle.
After our visit to Almourol Castle, we drove back towards Tomar, eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Seven Hills National Forest. Also known as Mata Nacional dos Sete Montes, this lush forest is a haven of tranquility located just outside the historic town center. It was a welcome change of pace after the imposing stone structure of the castle.

The forest, once owned by the Order of Christ, is now a public park where locals and tourists alike can escape the hustle and bustle of city life. We parked the car and began our exploration, following one of the many well-marked hiking trails that wind through the trees. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the scent of pine and eucalyptus. The sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating a mosaic of light and shadow on the forest floor.
As we walked, we marveled at the diverse flora and fauna around us. The forest is home to a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as numerous species of birds and small animals. I tried my hand at birdwatching, but my amateur skills were no match for the elusive creatures that flitted through the branches. Olivia, with her keen eye for detail, spotted several interesting plants and fungi, sharing her knowledge with me as we went.
We eventually reached one of the forest’s many lookout points, where we were rewarded with stunning views of Tomar and the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, we could see the Convent of Christ perched majestically on the hilltop, a reminder of the town’s rich history. We paused for a moment to take in the scenery, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty.
The Seven Hills National Forest is more than just a pretty place; it’s also a place of recreation and relaxation. We passed several picnic areas where families were enjoying lunch, children’s playgrounds filled with laughter, and even an environmental interpretation center where visitors can learn more about the forest’s ecology and history. It’s a testament to the importance of preserving green spaces in our increasingly urbanized world.
After our invigorating hike, we were ready for a late lunch. Based on a recommendation from a local, we decided to try Taverna Antiqua, a medieval-themed restaurant in the heart of Tomar. The restaurant is known for its unique atmosphere and traditional Portuguese cuisine, and we were eager to experience it for ourselves.

Stepping into Taverna Antiqua was like stepping back in time. The restaurant is housed in a historic building with stone walls, candlelit tables, and medieval-style decor. The staff were dressed in period costumes, adding to the immersive experience. The menu featured a variety of traditional Portuguese dishes, many of which were inspired by medieval recipes. It definitely felt like something out of a movie set, but in a good way.
We started with some appetizers, including a delicious cheese and ham platter and some flavorful cod fritters. For our main courses, I ordered the wild boar pie, while Olivia opted for the roasted chicken with honey and ginger. Both dishes were hearty and flavorful, showcasing the best of Portuguese cuisine. The portions were generous, and we struggled to finish everything, but we couldn’t resist trying the desserts. I had the hazelnut pudding, while Olivia chose the blueberry tart. Both were heavenly, providing the perfect ending to a memorable meal. The restaurant definitely lived up to its reputation, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Tomar.
As the evening approached, we decided to explore Tomar's nightlife. We stopped by Nabância Bar - Costa Silva & Henriques, Lda. for a drink. The bar had a cozy atmosphere, and we enjoyed chatting with some locals while sipping on local wine. It was a relaxing way to end a busy day.

For dinner, we ventured to Clandestino, a restaurant known for its modern take on Portuguese cuisine. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We shared a variety of tapas, each dish bursting with flavor. The bacalhau (codfish) was a standout, as were the pouting. Clandestino proved to be the perfect spot for a relaxed and delicious dinner.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Tomar’s historical landmarks, including the Monastery of Alcobaça and the Church of Santa Maria do Olival. I’m particularly excited to visit the Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its stunning Gothic architecture and rich history. We also plan to do some souvenir shopping at Rulys Tomar, a local shop that sells traditional Portuguese crafts and products. I’m hoping to find a few unique items to bring back home as reminders of our trip.
As I sit here writing this, I can’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Tomar. It’s a place that has truly captured my heart, and I know that I will cherish these memories for years to come. Good night from Tomar!
