Solo Historical Adventure in Athens
Day 9: A Byzantine Journey and Athenian Heights: Reflecting on My Solo Adventure
Discover Athens' Byzantine heritage and panoramic views on my final day, a perfect blend of history and breathtaking scenery.
Farewell, Athens!
As my solo historical adventure in Athens draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past nine days. Today was a day of contrasts, delving into the depths of Byzantine history and ascending to the heights of Lycabettus Hill for a final, breathtaking view of this ancient city. It's funny how a solo trip can sometimes feel longer, each moment more intensely felt. I'm already anticipating sharing all my photos and stories with Olivia when I get back to Toronto.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Cookoovaya. I decided to try their modern take on traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts. The atmosphere was relaxed, and it was the perfect way to start a day of exploration. I savored the flavors, thinking about how much I enjoy these quiet moments of culinary discovery. The restaurant is centrally located, and it was only a few steps from the Athens Hilton.

With a full stomach and a curious mind, I made my way to the Byzantine and Christian Museum. This museum, founded in 1914, houses an extensive collection of Byzantine art and artifacts, offering a deep dive into the medieval Roman Empire and its influence on Greece. The transition from antiquity to the medieval period was well-illustrated, showcasing the shift from paganism to Christianity and its impact on daily life, art, and architecture. I was particularly impressed by the collection of icons, each telling a story of faith and artistry. Some of the staff weren't the most pleasant, but I didn't let that ruin my experience.

To truly understand a city, one must walk its streets, explore its museums, and savor its flavors.
The museum’s exhibits ranged from early Christian relics to intricate Byzantine mosaics, providing a comprehensive overview of the era. I spent hours wandering through the halls, captivated by the detailed representations of saints and the theological scenes depicted in the artwork. The museum not only displayed the artifacts beautifully but also provided informative context that enriched the entire experience. It was fascinating to see how the spiritual aspect of the new faith was presented, focusing on the daily Christian experience rather than the controversies of the Church. The museum is located near the city's center, and its entrance fee is about €8, making it a bargain considering the depth of the collection.
After immersing myself in history, it was time for lunch. I chose Geros Tou Moria Restaurant in the Plaka district, enticed by its reputation for traditional Greek cuisine and live music. The restaurant was nestled on the steps of Mnisikleous Street, and the atmosphere was lively and inviting. I ordered a mix plate, which included lamb chops, moussaka, and grilled sardines. The food was delicious, and the live bouzouki music added to the authentic Greek experience. The staff made me feel welcomed, like I was being greeted by old friends. The outdoor seating allowed me to enjoy the beautiful weather while savoring my meal. I was able to taste the freshness and the exceptional ingredients used to ensure the perfect flavour combination.

With the afternoon sun casting a golden glow over Athens, I decided to visit Lycabettus Hill. Standing at 277 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in Athens, offering panoramic views of the city. I opted for the funicular to reach the top, a novelty that saved me from a strenuous walk in the heat. As I ascended, the city unfolded beneath me, revealing the Acropolis, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and the sprawling cityscape stretching out to the Aegean Sea. I made sure to arrive in time for sunset.

At the summit, I found the whitewashed church of Agios Georgios, a charming Cycladic-style chapel built in the 19th century. The viewing platform in front of the church provided sprawling views of Athens, and the cafe was open for refreshments. I took countless photos, trying to capture the breathtaking scenery. The sky transformed into a palette of orange, pink, and purple as the sun began to set, casting a magical glow over the ancient landmarks. I could even see the port of Piraeus and the island of Aegina in the distance. The view from Lycabettus Hill is best enjoyed at sunset, while waiting for the lights of the Acropolis to come on. The best time to visit Lycabettus Hill is in the afternoon while the sun begins to set. Every Athenian knows that the best place to see the sunset in Athens is Lycabettus Hill. It's an oasis in the middle of the city with rocky slopes covered with pine, olive and almond trees.
As the day turned to evening, I ventured to Brettos bar in the Plaka district for a pre-dinner drink. This historic bar, established in 1909, is the oldest distillery in Athens and is known for its homemade liqueurs and friendly atmosphere. The walls were lined with colorful bottles, creating a vibrant and inviting ambiance. I sampled a few of their signature liqueurs, including the coffee and citrus flavors, before settling on a glass of Assyrtiko, a refreshing white wine from Santorini. The staff were welcoming and helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable. This charming little bar can be elusive—nestled deep in downtown Athens, in the warren of streets that make up the Plaka.

For my final dinner in Athens, I chose Nolan, a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant known for its casual authentic Japanese experience with a Greek twist. The restaurant is owned by the famous Master Chef judge Kontizas and offers small dishes to share. The low prices seem to please the Greek crowds. On the day of the visit we tried several dishes, most of them with favourful broths, fresh fish and various healthy vegetables. It was the perfect ending to my culinary journey through Athens. I savored each bite, reflecting on the incredible flavors and experiences of the past nine days. The interesting and colorful dishes are inspired by the young chef who was born to a Greek father and a Japanese mother, he uses cooking influences from both countries to create unique and delectable dishes.
