Day 2: A Day of Panoramic Views and Botanical Wonders in Urbino
Discover Urbino's breathtaking views from Fortezza Albornoz and Punto Panoramico, plus serene beauty at the Botanical Garden.
Urbino's High Points
Today was all about soaking in the stunning vistas and natural beauty that Urbino has to offer. From the commanding heights of Fortezza Albornoz to the tranquil pathways of the Botanical Garden, Urbino revealed itself in layers of history and charm. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the chance to immerse myself in a place and truly experience its essence.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Grottino. Fuelled up with coffee and pastries, we were ready to tackle the heights of Fortezza Albornoz. The walk up to the fortress was a bit of a climb, but the anticipation of the panoramic views kept us going. I must admit, my legs were burning a little – maybe I should have kept up with my soccer games back in Edmonton! But hey, all in the name of travel, right?
The Fortezza Albornoz, perched atop the highest point of Monte di S. Sergio, is an imposing structure with a rich history. Originally built in the 14th century for defensive purposes, it has been rebuilt and restored several times over the centuries. As we explored the fortress, I couldn't help but imagine what it must have been like to stand guard here, watching over the city and the surrounding landscape. The brickwork and architecture are impressive, a testament to the ingenuity of medieval engineers.
What struck me most about the Fortezza Albornoz was the breathtaking view. From this vantage point, Urbino unfolded before us in all its Renaissance glory. The iconic Duomo and Palazzo Ducale stood out against the backdrop of rolling hills. I could see why Urbino is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the city is a living work of art. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the beauty of the scene, but no picture could truly do it justice. The crisp September air made the views even more spectacular, with the sunlight casting long shadows across the landscape.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After spending a good hour at the fortress, soaking in the views and learning about its history, we made our way to Punto Panoramico di Urbino. This viewpoint offered a different perspective of the city, equally stunning. From here, we could see the terracotta rooftops of Urbino, the winding streets, and the lush greenery that surrounds the city. It was the perfect spot to simply relax and take in the beauty of Urbino. I even spotted the Botanical Garden from above, our next destination!

Before heading to the Botanical Garden, we decided to grab some lunch at Ristorante Vecchia Urbino. I was in the mood for something traditional, so I ordered the *crescia*, a local flatbread, with *prosciutto* and *formaggio*. It was simple but delicious, the perfect fuel for an afternoon of exploring. My friends opted for pasta dishes, which they said were equally satisfying.
With our bellies full, we ventured to the Botanical Garden of the University. Founded in 1809, this garden is a hidden gem in the heart of Urbino. Spanning over 2,200 square meters, it is divided into three terraced levels, each showcasing a different collection of plants. As we entered the garden, we were immediately transported to a tranquil oasis, a world away from the bustling city.

The Botanical Garden is home to an impressive variety of plant species, including medicinal, aromatic, and ornamental plants. I was particularly fascinated by the *Hortus simplicium*, an area dedicated to medicinal plants. It was amazing to learn about the different properties of these plants and their historical uses. Fatima would have loved this place, with her nursing background, she always appreciates the healing power of nature. I made a mental note to bring her here next time we visit Urbino.
We strolled through the garden, admiring the vibrant flower beds, the towering trees, and the carefully curated plant collections. The air was filled with the fragrance of blossoms, and the atmosphere was incredibly peaceful. I could have spent hours simply wandering around, soaking in the beauty of nature. Nelson and Sheila would have loved running around the narrow passageways, looking for lizards. This garden is not only a place of beauty but also a place of learning, with informative signage throughout that educates visitors about the importance of biodiversity.
As the afternoon drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a couple of drinks at The Bosom Pub. This cozy pub, located near Piazza della Repubblica, is a popular spot with locals and students alike. We sat outside, enjoying the lively atmosphere and sipping on local beer. The bartender was friendly and welcoming, and we chatted with some of the locals, learning more about Urbino and its culture.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we made a quick stop at the Uniurb Store. I wanted to pick up a souvenir to remember our time in Urbino. I ended up buying a Uniurb t-shirt for Nelson and a small notebook for Sheila. I also grabbed a couple of Uniurb mugs for Fatima and me – perfect for our morning coffee back in Edmonton.

For dinner, we had reservations at Taverna degli Artisti. This charming restaurant is known for its traditional Urbino cuisine and its cozy atmosphere. I ordered the *vincisgrassi*, a local lasagna dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista, the Museo diocesano Albani, and the Parco della Resistenza. I am particularly excited to see the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista, with its stunning frescoes. I’ve heard it’s a must-see in Urbino. We’ll also grab breakfast at Caffè Raffaello, lunch at Ristorante Pizzeria Locanda Del Blasone, and dinner at Ristorante Osteria L'Angolo Divino. And of course, we’ll make sure to check out Old Garage Vintage and MaiSenza Lounge Bar for some local flavor. It promises to be another day filled with history, art, and culture.
