Florentine Adventures: Art, Leather, and Culinary Wonders

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Florence, a city that continues to enchant Fatima, the kids, and me with its rich history and vibrant culture. We set out to explore some of the city's most iconic landmarks, indulge in its culinary delights, and immerse ourselves in its renowned leather craftsmanship.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cantinetta delle Terme. It was a quaint spot, the kind that feels like a local secret. The kids were excited, Sheila especially, as she loves trying new things. Nelson, ever the cautious one, stuck to his usual pastries but gave a thumbs-up nonetheless. I opted for a traditional Florentine breakfast, while Fatima enjoyed a lighter, more modern option. It's always a good way to start the day, fueling up for the adventures ahead.

With our bellies full, we made our way to Palazzo Vecchio. The sheer grandeur of the palace was breathtaking. The architecture, the statues, everything spoke of a time when Florence was at the center of the world. Nelson was particularly fascinated by the Hall of Five Hundred, imagining the grand events that must have taken place within those walls. Sheila, on the other hand, was captivated by the intricate details of the frescoes, asking Fatima endless questions about the stories they told. I found myself lost in thought, reflecting on the power and ambition that must have driven the Medici family to create such a magnificent structure. There was no specific event taking place there today, but simply being there was an event in itself. It was a beautiful spring day, so the light streaming through the windows added to the beauty.

The true beauty of Florence lies not just in its monuments, but in the stories and traditions that have shaped its soul.

Next on our list was the Basilica di Santa Croce. This church is not only a place of worship but also a final resting place for some of Italy's most celebrated figures, including Michelangelo and Galileo. Walking through the basilica, I felt a sense of awe and reverence. Nelson, who has been learning about famous scientists in school, was particularly excited to see Galileo's tomb. Sheila was more interested in the stained glass windows, their vibrant colors creating a kaleidoscope of light on the ancient stones. Fatima and I took a moment to appreciate the architectural brilliance of the basilica, its soaring arches and intricate details a testament to the skill and artistry of the craftsmen who built it centuries ago. As we wandered, I couldn't help but think of the Scuola del Cuoio, the leather school located within the church grounds. It was a place I was eager to visit, a place where tradition and craftsmanship still thrive.

Speaking of craftsmanship, after the Basilica, we headed to Scuola del Cuoio S.r.l., the renowned leather school. As an electrician, I appreciate the skill and dedication it takes to master a craft, and I was eager to see the artisans at work. The school is located within the grounds of Santa Croce, and as we approached, we could already smell the rich scent of leather. Inside, we watched as skilled craftsmen and women meticulously cut, stitch, and shape leather into beautiful bags, wallets, and other accessories. The kids were fascinated, especially when one of the artisans showed them how to stamp a design onto a piece of leather. Sheila, always eager to try new things, even got a chance to try her hand at it, creating a small souvenir to take home. I was impressed by the dedication and passion of the artisans, their commitment to preserving a centuries-old tradition. Fatima, ever the practical one, couldn't resist buying a beautiful leather handbag, a timeless piece that she knew she would treasure for years to come. I learned that Florence has been working with leather since the 13th century, when the Leathermakers' and Galigai's Guild was born in 1282. It's amazing to see that this tradition is still alive and well today. Maybe next time, I'll sign up for a workshop myself!

For lunch, we ventured to Coquinarius, a restaurant known for its local, seasonal, and organic food. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu was filled with tempting options. We started with some traditional Tuscan appetizers, followed by pasta dishes that were bursting with flavor. Nelson, surprisingly, tried the wild boar ragu and declared it delicious. Sheila, of course, opted for the simpler tomato sauce, but she ate it with gusto. Fatima and I shared a bottle of local wine, savoring the flavors of Tuscany. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge after a busy morning of sightseeing.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Ristorante Borgo San Jacopo for dinner. Located near the Ponte Vecchio, the restaurant offered stunning views of the Arno River. The ambiance was elegant and romantic, the perfect setting for a special evening. We started with some seafood appetizers, followed by traditional Florentine steak, cooked to perfection. The kids were surprisingly well-behaved, perhaps sensing the importance of the occasion. Fatima and I savored every bite, enjoying the exquisite flavors and the breathtaking views. It was a truly memorable meal, a perfect end to a perfect day.

Back at the hotel, the kids are already fast asleep, dreaming of the adventures to come. Fatima and I are sitting on the balcony, sipping a glass of wine and reflecting on the day. The air is cool and crisp, and the sounds of the city are a gentle lullaby. I feel a sense of contentment, a sense of gratitude for this opportunity to share this experience with my family. As I look out at the twinkling lights of Florence, I know that this is a trip we will never forget. And, as always, I remember the importance of not forgetting the universal power adapter and light jackets, for the unpredictable weather.

Tomorrow we are off to the Boboli Gardens and the Palazzo Pitti, hoping for more sunshine and adventure!

Until then,
Joao.
