Family Adventure in Florence: Exploring Italian Culture and History
Day 10: Saturday Strolls and Spirited Nights in Florence
Exploring Strozzi Palace and Piazza Santo Spirito, savoring Florentine cuisine, and enjoying vibrant nightlife with family in Florence.
A Day of Renaissance and Revelry
Today was a beautiful blend of history, culture, and Florentine charm. From exploring magnificent palaces to enjoying the lively atmosphere of local piazzas, Florence continued to captivate Fatima, the kids, and me. It's days like these that make our family trips so memorable, filled with new discoveries and shared laughter.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Logò Ristorante. It was a delightful start. The kids enjoyed their usual pastries, while Fatima and I savored the strong, rich coffee that seems to be a staple here in Italy. Logò Ristorante is small and quiet, well appointed creating a very comfortable setting. The service is outstanding with suggestions, if asked, along the way.

After breakfast, we made our way to Strozzi Palace. As an electrician, I’m always fascinated by the infrastructure of older buildings, and this palace was no exception. The sheer scale of the Palazzo is impressive, and learning about its history—how Filippo Strozzi, a rival of the Medici family, commissioned it back in 1489—added another layer of intrigue. Nelson and Sheila were particularly taken with the story of the Strozzi family’s ambition to create the grandest palace in Florence. We learned that the palace remained the seat of the Strozzi family until 1937. Great changes were made to the building when the Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni occupied Palazzo Strozzi. The palazzo, granted by the Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni to the Italian State in 1999, is now home to the Institute of Humanist Studies and to the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
Currently, Palazzo Strozzi is hosting the Tracey Emin exhibition “Sex and Solitude.” We decided to explore the exhibit, and it was certainly thought-provoking. The kids were a bit bewildered by some of the art, but it sparked some interesting conversations about self-expression and the human condition. Fatima appreciated the raw emotion conveyed in Emin’s work. They also have another exhibition called Time for Women! Empowering Visions in 20 Years of the Max Mara Art Prize for Women.
Leaving the palace, we strolled towards Piazza Santo Spirito. The weather was pleasant, with broken clouds and a temperature of around 9°C, perfect for a leisurely walk. As we approached the piazza, we were immediately drawn in by its vibrant atmosphere. The square was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively, communal vibe. I could imagine this being a place where the Augustinian monks gave preaches, and where festivals and markets took place. It’s amazing how much history a single square can hold. There were no specific events taking place today, but the atmosphere itself was enough to keep us entertained.

For lunch, we chose Ristorante Romantico il Paiolo, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Tuscan cuisine. We were not disappointed! The ambiance was indeed romantic, with a relaxed atmosphere that made us feel right at home. The waiter was incredibly helpful, guiding us through the menu and even bringing out a piece of uncooked steak to show me the size before I ordered. I opted for the Florentine steak, cooked to perfection, while Fatima enjoyed a delightful bowl of Papadelie with beef ragu. The kids shared a plate of gnocchi, which they declared the best they’d ever had. We shared a steak and gnocchi for our main and it was excellent. TheFork users have rated accordingly in the following categories: Quality of food: 9/10; Service: 9.2/10; Atmosphere: 9.2/10.

After our satisfying lunch, we took some time to simply soak in the atmosphere of Piazza Santo Spirito. Nelson and Sheila chased pigeons around the fountain, while Fatima and I sat on a bench, enjoying the simple pleasure of watching them play. The square is surrounded by 15th-century houses, including Palazzo Guadagni, which added to the charm of the area. I read that the ground floor of this building served as Florence's first public library which opened in 1914.
As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience some of Florence’s nightlife. We dropped the kids off at the Hotel California with promises of a movie night and plenty of snacks, then Fatima and I headed to FUK - Cocktail bar, music & more. The bar had a homely atmosphere, with nice staff and reasonable prices. I tried one of their signature cocktails, while Fatima enjoyed a glass of local wine. The music was great, and we found ourselves relaxing and enjoying each other’s company after a busy day of sightseeing. We found the best balance between flavors, aromas and perfumes. Every menu contains different ideas, collaboration and a touch of curiosity.

Tomorrow is our last day in Florence, and we plan to make the most of it. We’re starting with a visit to the Basilica di Santo Spirito, followed by a stroll through the Giardino Bardini. In the afternoon, we’ll do some last-minute souvenir shopping at the Florence gift shop before enjoying a final Florentine dinner at Cinto-Cucina In Torre. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing the Basilica di Santo Spirito, as it was designed by Brunelleschi, the same architect who designed the Duomo. I’m also excited to explore the Giardino Bardini, as I’ve heard it offers stunning views of the city.
As I sit here writing this, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we’ve had in Florence. It’s a city that truly has something for everyone, from art and history to food and nightlife. I’m glad that I have been able to share this with Fatima and the children. I’m already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever it may take us.
“Marrabenta” is playing softly in the background as I finish this entry. It reminds me of home, of Mozambique. It is a beautiful cap to another beautiful day.
I must remember to buy a universal power adapter when I get back to Edmonton. It would have been useful on this trip.
