Solo Adventure in Historic Coimbra
Day 3: Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Roman Ruins and Ancient Aqueducts in Coimbra
Journey through history as I explore the Roman ruins of Conimbriga and the impressive Aqueduto de São Sebastião in Coimbra, Portugal.
Echoes of Empires Past
Today was a day of historical immersion, tracing the footsteps of Romans and marveling at the ingenuity of ancient engineers. From exploring well-preserved ruins to standing beneath towering aqueducts, I felt a profound connection to the past. It was a day of discovery, one that left me pondering the legacies of civilizations long gone and the enduring power of human innovation.
My Saturday started with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Il Tartufo. I opted for a simple but satisfying plate of spaghetti pomodoro, fueling up for a day of exploration. It reminded me of Fatima's cooking back home, simple, comforting, and full of flavour. I made a mental note to try and recreate it for Nelson and Sheila when I get back; they would love it. After breakfast, I hopped on a bus heading towards the Conimbriga Ruins, eager to delve into Portugal's Roman past.

The journey to Conimbriga was scenic, passing through rolling hills and quaint villages. As we approached, I could already feel the weight of history in the air. Conimbriga, considered one of the best-preserved Roman settlements in Portugal, did not disappoint. The site is expansive, and I spent hours wandering through the ruins of what was once a thriving Roman city. The intricate mosaics were particularly striking, depicting scenes from mythology and everyday life. I could almost picture the Roman citizens strolling through their city, conducting business, and engaging in daily routines.
The stones whisper stories of emperors and citizens, of triumphs and tribulations, connecting us to a time long before our own.
The House of the Fountains was a highlight, showcasing an impressive system of water distribution and stunning mosaic floors. I was particularly fascinated by the well-preserved bathhouses, imagining the social rituals that once took place within those walls. It's incredible to think that almost two thousand years ago, people were enjoying similar comforts and social interactions as we do today. I spent quite a while exploring the Museu Monográfico de Conimbriga, which houses a vast collection of artifacts unearthed at the site. From pottery shards and tools to jewelry and sculptures, each object offered a glimpse into the lives of Conimbriga's inhabitants. It was fascinating to see how advanced their craftsmanship was and how much their culture influenced the region.

After immersing myself in the world of Conimbriga, I headed back to Coimbra, eager to explore another historical landmark: the Aqueduto de São Sebastião, also known as Arcos do Jardim. This impressive aqueduct, built in the 16th century, once supplied water to the upper part of Coimbra University. As I walked along its length, I marveled at the architectural ingenuity of the structure and the sheer scale of the project. The arches soared high above the city, providing stunning views of Coimbra's skyline. I imagined the countless hours of labor and the meticulous planning that went into its construction. It's a testament to human determination and our ability to overcome challenges through innovation.

Before dinner, I decided to stop by Galeria Santa Clara for a drink. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music and art adding to the vibrant ambiance. I enjoyed a glass of local wine, reflecting on the day's adventures and soaking in the energy of Coimbra's nightlife. For dinner, I ventured to Restaurante Fangas Maior, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the aroma of grilled meats filled the air. I ordered a hearty dish of roasted pork with potatoes and vegetables, savoring the rich flavors and satisfying my hunger after a long day of exploring.

As I walked back to my accommodation, the city was alive with the sounds of laughter and music. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Coimbra's rich history and vibrant culture. It was a day of discovery, one that deepened my appreciation for the past and broadened my understanding of the human story.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore some of Coimbra's gardens, including the Sereia Garden and the Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Coimbra. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in the natural beauty of the city and discovering more of its hidden gems.
Reflecting on my day, I'm reminded of a Mozambican proverb my grandfather used to say: “Those who do not know their past are condemned to repeat it.” Today, I feel like I've taken a step towards understanding the past, not just of Portugal, but of humanity itself. It's a humbling and inspiring feeling, one that I'll carry with me as I continue my solo adventure in this beautiful country. I will make sure I tell Nelson and Sheila all about it.
Before heading to bed, I started planning my itinerary for tomorrow. I will start my day with breakfast at Restaurante GreenSide, before heading to the Sereia Garden, followed by the Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Coimbra, and finally Parque de Santa Cruz. In the evening I plan to have dinner at Restaurante Loggia. And before ending the day, do some shopping at Alma Shopping.
I am looking forward to experiencing what tomorrow will bring.
