Farewell, Loire Valley!

As our enchanting journey through the Loire Valley draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the memories we’ve created, the history we’ve absorbed, and the sheer beauty that has surrounded us at every turn. Today, our final day, was no exception, filled with fairytale architecture, fragrant roses, and a touch of local charm.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Le Château de Pray. The Michelin star certainly lived up to its reputation, with a meal that was both refined and satisfying. Elke particularly enjoyed the pastries, while Maximilian was impressed by the presentation of the eggs. I appreciated the strong coffee, fortifying me for our final day of exploration. Some online reviews mention slow service, but we found it impeccable, with friendly and knowledgeable staff. The setting, of course, was magnificent, a perfect start to the day.

After breakfast, we made our way to the jewel in the Loire Valley’s crown: Château de Chenonceau. As a restorer of antique furniture, I was particularly eager to see this château, often referred to as the 'Château des Dames' due to its history being shaped by remarkable women. The approach to Chenonceau is breathtaking, the château seemingly rising out of the River Cher. The architecture is a seamless blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, a testament to the various eras and influential figures who have left their mark on it. We learned that the estate was first mentioned in the 11th century, with the current château built between 1514 and 1522. The bridge over the river was added later, in the 16th century.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the grandeur and elegance of the interiors. The rooms are filled with exquisite furniture, tapestries, and paintings, each piece telling a story of the château’s rich history. I found myself particularly drawn to the gallery spanning the river, imagining the lavish balls and gatherings that must have taken place there centuries ago. Elke was fascinated by the stories of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici, the two powerful women who shaped Chenonceau's destiny. Maximilian, ever the observant one, noticed the intricate details in the ceilings and the craftsmanship of the fireplaces.

To walk through Chenonceau is to walk through the heart of French history, guided by the hands of the women who loved and shaped it.

After exploring the interiors, we ventured into the gardens, equally as impressive as the château itself. The Roseraie du Château, a rose garden, was in full bloom, a riot of colors and fragrances. I must admit, I felt a pang of longing for my own small garden back in Heidelberg. Perhaps I can take some inspiration from here and try to cultivate some new varieties of roses. Elke, of course, was in her element, snapping photos of every bloom. We learned that the gardens were influenced by Catherine de Medici and feature a maze.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Auberge Pom'Poire in Azay-le-Rideau. This charming restaurant, nestled in the heart of the Loire Valley's orchards, offered a menu that was both creative and respectful of local produce. The chef’s inspiration shines through in every dish, and we opted for the 'menu carte blanche', which was a delightful surprise. The restaurant is known for its creative cuisine and use of seasonal products. Maximilian, always with a keen eye for detail, appreciated the artistic presentation of each plate.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in a bit of local shopping. I had read about La Boîte A Couture, a charming little shop in Château Renault, and Elke, with her love for all things sewing and crafts, was eager to visit. The shop was a treasure trove of fabrics, ribbons, and sewing notions. Elke spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, while Maximilian, surprisingly, found himself intrigued by the vintage sewing machines on display. We even picked up a few small souvenirs to take back home, a reminder of our time in the Loire Valley.

Our final dinner in the Loire Valley was at Restaurant du Château de Rochecotte. The restaurant itself is located within an elegant château dating back to the 18th century. While some reviews mention that the food presentation is prioritized over taste, we found the meal to be both visually appealing and delicious. The setting was truly magical, overlooking the Loire Valley as the sun began to set. We felt like royalty, savoring our last moments in this beautiful region.

As I sit here tonight, penning these final thoughts, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve shared as a family. The Loire Valley has exceeded all expectations, offering a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that is truly unique. From the magnificent châteaux to the charming villages, from the exquisite cuisine to the warm hospitality of the locals, every moment has been a treasure.

I am particularly grateful for the opportunity to share this journey with my family. Elke’s enthusiasm for history and culture has been infectious, while Maximilian’s keen observations have added a new dimension to our explorations. These are memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

While this chapter of our adventure comes to an end, I know that new ones await. The world is vast, and there is so much more to explore. But for now, I will hold onto the memories of the Loire Valley, allowing them to inspire me in my work and in my daily life.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Heidelberg, filled with stories to tell and photographs to share. Until next time, au revoir, and thank you, Loire Valley, for a truly unforgettable experience.

It is time to return to Heidelberg, reinvigorated by the beauty and history we have encountered. The scent of roses and the echoes of French history will linger in our memories long after we've unpacked our bags.
