Family Adventure on Fiji's Coral Coast
Day 10: Hooked on Happiness: Fishing and Feasting on the Coral Coast
A day of Fijian fishing adventures, delicious local cuisine, and unforgettable moments with family on the Coral Coast.
Reeling in Memories on the Coral Coast
Today was a day of sun, sea, and scrumptious food, all wrapped up in the warmth of Fijian hospitality. It’s days like these that remind me why I love sharing my experiences, hoping to inspire others to seek out authentic connections and create lasting memories.
The day began with the aroma of spices wafting from Wok & Spice Fiji, where we enjoyed a hearty breakfast. The lamb curry was a particular hit, reminding me of the flavors I grew up with in Navua. It’s funny how food can transport you back to childhood in an instant. Sailosi was particularly fond of the chicken chowmein, and Mere enjoyed a spicy roti.

After breakfast, we headed out for our fishing charter with Coral Coast Fishing Charters. The Coral Coast is renowned for its diverse fishing opportunities, and I was eager to share this experience with my family. Growing up in Fiji, fishing was more than just a hobby; it was a way of life, a connection to the ocean that sustained us. I wanted Sailosi to understand and appreciate that connection, too.

Captain Fai was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, sharing stories of the sea and pointing out the best spots for catching fish. The boat was well-equipped, and soon we were trolling along the coast, the sun warm on our faces. It wasn’t long before Sailosi felt a tug on his line. His eyes widened with excitement as he reeled in a beautiful Spanish mackerel.
The best memories are the ones made together, casting lines into the sea of life and reeling in moments of joy.
Mere and I cheered him on, snapping photos to capture the moment. It was a proud dad moment for me, seeing my son connect with the ocean in the same way I did as a boy. We spent the rest of the morning fishing, catching a variety of species, including red emperor and yellowfin tuna. The thrill of the catch, the salty air, and the stunning scenery made for an unforgettable experience.
After our fishing adventure, we were famished. We decided to try Sitar Indian & Thai Restaurant in Korotogo for lunch. The restaurant had a laid-back vibe, and the aroma of spices filled the air. We ordered a mix of Indian and Thai dishes, including butter chicken, dal, and green curry. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. Sailosi particularly enjoyed the samosas, while Mere raved about the eggplant curry.

After lunch, we stopped by Tappoo Sigatoka Shop. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for friends and family back in Vancouver. Tappoo is a great place to find Fijian handicrafts, jewelry, and clothing. I ended up buying a few carved wooden bowls and some bula shirts. I even found a beautiful black pearl necklace for Mere, a little something to remind her of our trip.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to the Sundowner Bar & Grill for dinner. This restaurant is located right on the beach, offering stunning views of the sunset. We arrived just in time to see the sky ablaze with color. The kids were mesmerized as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple.

The Sundowner Bar & Grill is known for its wood-fired pizzas and grilled meats. We ordered a pizza to share, along with some grilled prawns and a steak. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and festive. A local band played Fijian music, adding to the ambiance.
We sat there for hours, enjoying the food, the music, and the company. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. As we drove back to my relatives' place, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share my homeland with my family.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Naihehe Cave, one of Fiji’s largest cave systems. I’ve heard it’s an incredible experience, and I’m looking forward to exploring it with Mere and Sailosi. We’ll have breakfast at the Beach Bar And Grill and lunch at Crab Shack Fiji. In the evening, we will have dinner at Gecko's Restaurant and perhaps check out Opium Bar Fiji.
It's moments like these, surrounded by family, immersed in culture, and connected to the land, that make life truly rich. I hope Sailosi will carry these memories with him always, a reminder of his Fijian heritage and the importance of family.
Until tomorrow, moce mada (goodbye for now)!
P.S. I almost forgot! I ran into an old classmate from Navua District School, Litia. It was such a pleasant surprise! We reminisced about our school days and laughed about old times. Fiji is such a small place, you never know who you might run into! It really made my day.
I am also excited about the Avant Garde Art Exhibition happening in Fiji between May 1st and 16th. Maybe I will have time to check it out.
