A Journey to the Heart of Fiji's Past

Today marked the beginning of our family's adventure in Levuka, a town steeped in history and charm. It felt surreal to finally walk the streets I've heard so much about from my grandparents. As a Fijian who grew up in Canada, this trip is incredibly special – a chance to reconnect with our heritage and share it with my wife, Mere, and son, Sailosi. The air here is thick with the scent of the sea and the echoes of a bygone era.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sea Site Wine & Dine Restaurant. The restaurant, newly renovated, offered a stunning view of the ocean. We enjoyed some delicious Indian curries, a delightful mix of Fijian and Indian flavors that reminded me of my childhood. Sailosi was particularly fond of the fresh fruit selection. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. It was great to see my son enjoying the food from my home country, and it reminded me of the importance of sharing our culture with the next generation.

After breakfast, we set out to explore Levuka Historical Port Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through the town felt like stepping back in time. The colonial-era architecture was remarkably well-preserved, and I could almost imagine the bustling port as it was in the 19th century. We strolled along Beach Street, admiring the wooden cottages and historical buildings. The vibrant colours and unique architecture provided a stark contrast to the steel and glass of Vancouver.

Exploring Levuka is like turning the pages of a living history book, each corner whispering tales of Fiji's vibrant past.

Our next stop was the Levuka Museum. Housed in the oldest Morris Hedstrom building, the museum offered a detailed account of the town's past. The exhibits showcased artifacts from the colonial era and highlighted pivotal moments in Fiji's journey to independence. I found myself particularly drawn to the stories of the early settlers and the impact of European influence on Fijian culture. Sailosi, surprisingly, was fascinated by the ancient weapons and tools on display. Mere enjoyed reading about the cultural evolution of the island, from its indigenous roots to colonial influences. It was a great way for us to learn more about the history of this unique town.

After the museum, we decided to support the local economy by visiting Dutt's Retail Store for a few supplies. Located on Beach Street, it was more than just a grocery store; it was a slice of the local culture. We picked up some local produce, snacks, and essential items. The friendly staff were eager to assist us, providing insights into local products and recommendations. I even managed to find some Fijian spices to bring back to Vancouver. It reminded me of the small stores back in Navua, where everyone knew each other and community was everything.

For lunch, we headed to Sweet Laisa's Kitchen. This charming eatery offered a delectable selection of Fijian staples at affordable prices. We tried rourou (taro leaves), kokoda (Fijian ceviche), and ika valolo (fish in coconut cream). The food was delicious and authentic, and the service was warm and welcoming. Sailosi loved the kokoda, while Mere was impressed by the freshness of the ingredients. I enjoyed the opportunity to share these traditional dishes with my family, each bite bringing back cherished memories.

In the late afternoon, we continued our exploration of Levuka town. We visited the old British fort, the old courthouse, and the old post office, each a testament to the town's rich history. We walked along the waterfront, taking in the stunning views of the ocean. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves created a sense of tranquility. We also took some time to appreciate the lush tropical forests and beautiful beaches surrounding the town. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

For dinner, we chose Levuka Restaurant, known for its authentic Fijian cuisine. We savored a variety of local dishes, including fresh seafood and traditional Fijian curries. The restaurant's ambiance was delightful, and the staff were incredibly attentive. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with cultural immersion and historical discovery. The staff were very friendly, and the service was great. This made the experience even more enjoyable.

As the sun set, casting a golden glow over Levuka, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of connection to this place. It was more than just a tourist destination; it was a part of my heritage, a place where my ancestors had lived and thrived. I was grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, and I looked forward to continuing our journey of rediscovery in the days to come.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the natural beauty of Ovalau Island. We'll visit Waitovu Waterfall and Nalulu Passage, immersing ourselves in the island's stunning landscapes. I'm particularly excited about Waitovu Waterfall. I've heard stories about its beauty, and I can't wait to see it for myself. We might even brave a visit to the Levuka Club for a taste of local nightlife. It will be a completely different experience from today, but I'm sure it will be just as memorable.

Tonight, as I reflect on our first day in Levuka, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. This trip is not just a vacation; it's a journey back to our roots, a chance to reconnect with our family history, and a way to create lasting memories with my loved ones. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, and I am excited to continue sharing our experiences with you all.
