The Adventure Begins

After months of planning and anticipation, the day has finally arrived. I'm standing at the trailhead of the Choquequirao Trail, ready to embark on a solo adventure through the Peruvian Andes. As a Fijian living in Vancouver, I've always been drawn to the mountains, but this trek promises something more than just stunning scenery. It's a chance to connect with an ancient culture, challenge myself physically, and reflect on life away from the familiar comforts of home. I remember packing my bag last night, double-checking my essentials – hiking boots, water purification tablets, warm clothing, and of course, my camera. I did forget my portable phone charger and gaiters, but I will survive. As I take my first steps, I can't help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation. Let's see what awaits me on this journey to the 'Cradle of Gold.'

The journey to get here was an adventure in itself. The flights from Vancouver to Lima, and then to Cusco, were long but uneventful. From Cusco, I made my way to the starting point of the trek. The air is crisp and cool, a welcome change from the warmer temperatures I'm used to in Vancouver during the shoulder season. November in the Andes means the start of the rainy season. Hopefully, I packed enough rain gear! The landscape is breathtaking, with towering peaks and deep valleys stretching as far as the eye can see. It reminds me a little of the interior of Viti Levu, back home in Fiji, but on a much grander scale.

My first stop was the Choquequirao Trail, the gateway to the archaeological park. The trail is well-worn, but already I can feel the challenge it presents. The altitude is something I need to be mindful of, as Cusco sits at a lofty 3,500 meters above sea level. I'm taking it slow and steady, trying to acclimatize as best as possible. I remember Mere reminding me to drink coca tea. I should have listened to her. I passed by a few Choquequirao Trail Shops, stocking up on some essentials and snacks for the journey. I even picked up a small, hand-woven bracelet as a memento of my first day. The shopkeepers were friendly and welcoming, offering advice and sharing stories about the trail ahead.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Today, my thousand-mile journey begins on the Choquequirao Trail.

For breakfast, I stopped at Choquequirao craft restaurant peruvian cuisine. While there aren't many reviews available, I'm keen to try some authentic Peruvian flavors. I enjoyed a hearty meal of quinoa and eggs, fueling up for the day's hike. It was simple, but satisfying, and the perfect start to my trekking adventure. It reminded me of the simple meals my mother used to make back in Navua, Fiji, using fresh, local ingredients. Sometimes, the simplest things are the most nourishing.

As I continued along the trail, I made my way toward the Choquequirao Archaeological Park. This ancient site is known as the Last Refuge of the Incas, and I could feel the weight of history with every step. The Incas were incredibly skilled engineers and architects, and their legacy is evident in the well-preserved ruins.

Choquequirao, believed to have been constructed during the reign of King Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui in the 15th and 16th centuries, served as an administrative and religious center. Some historians suggest it was a strategic military outpost. The site also served as a refuge for Inca rebels, including Manco Inca, after the Spanish conquest of Cusco in 1533.

Exploring the park, I was struck by the similarities between Choquequirao and Machu Picchu. The terraces, plazas, and temples are all constructed with the same precision and attention to detail. Yet, Choquequirao feels more remote and untouched, offering a sense of solitude that's hard to find at the more popular Machu Picchu. It's easy to imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago, with the Incas tending to their crops, worshipping their gods, and defending their empire.

For lunch, I stopped at LA TERRAZA DE CHOQUEQUIRAO, a restaurant known for its traditional American cuisine and breathtaking views of the Andean mountains. It seemed like an odd choice in the middle of Peru, but I was curious to see what it had to offer. I ordered a burger and fries, a taste of home away from home. The food was surprisingly good, and the views were indeed spectacular. It was a great spot to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration of the park.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Chicha por Gaston Acurio, a restaurant in Cusco renowned for its modern take on Peruvian cuisine. Although it wasn't directly on the trail, I decided to venture into Cusco for dinner, eager to experience the culinary creations of Chef Gaston Acurio. The restaurant had a pleasant ambiance and excellent service. I tried the Lomo Saltado, a classic Peruvian dish of stir-fried beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes. It was bursting with flavor, and I savored every bite. It was a reminder of the global cuisine I enjoy back in Vancouver, and it was fascinating to see how Peruvian chefs are innovating with traditional ingredients.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to my campsite, feeling grateful for the experiences of the day. The Choquequirao Trail had challenged me physically, but it had also rewarded me with stunning scenery, fascinating history, and delicious food. I'm looking forward to what tomorrow brings, as I plan to visit Abra Choquequirao and Choquequirao Puquio. I'm also hoping to relax at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me on day two of the Choquequirao Trek.

Before drifting off to sleep, I reflected on the day's events. I thought about Mere and Sailosi back home in Vancouver. I missed them dearly, but I also knew that this solo journey was something I needed to do for myself. It was a chance to reconnect with nature, challenge my limits, and gain a new perspective on life. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a sense of peace and contentment, knowing that I was exactly where I was meant to be.

The Choquequirao Trek is not just a hike; it's an immersion into the heart of the Inca civilization and a journey of self-discovery. I can't wait to share more of my experiences with you as I continue this incredible adventure. Vinaka vakalevu!
