Day 2: Heights and History
Today was a day of pushing my limits, both physically and mentally, as I continued my solo trek through the Choquequirao region. The air was crisp, the scenery breathtaking, and the challenge immense. It was a day filled with steep climbs, ancient ruins, and moments of profound solitude. The kind of day that etches itself into your memory, reminding you why you seek out these adventures in the first place.

The morning started early, fueled by a hearty breakfast at Green House. I enjoyed some eggs and local bread, which gave me the energy I needed for the day ahead. The plan was ambitious: ascend to Abra Choquequirao, and explore Choquequirao Puquio. I knew it would be demanding, but the allure of the unknown was too strong to resist.

The initial stretch of the trail was a steady climb. As I gained altitude, the views became more and more spectacular. The sun peeked over the mountain ridges, casting long shadows across the valleys. The landscape was a tapestry of greens and browns, with the occasional burst of color from a hardy wildflower. The air was thin, and each step required conscious effort, a stark reminder of the elevation. I missed Mere and Sailosi at times like this and thought how much they would have loved this view.

My first major objective was Abra Choquequirao. The climb was relentless, a true test of endurance. The trail snaked its way up the mountainside, each turn revealing a new vista more stunning than the last. I paused frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to soak in the scenery. The sheer scale of the Andes is humbling, and I felt a profound sense of insignificance amidst such grandeur. Abra Choquequirao sits at 3,318 meters (10,883 feet). When I finally reached the pass, I was rewarded with panoramic views of the Vilcabamba mountain range and the snow-capped Choquetacarpo glacier. The vista was absolutely breathtaking, a well-deserved payoff for the arduous climb. I took some photos, drank some water, and allowed myself a moment of quiet contemplation, and felt like I was on top of the world.

After conquering Abra Choquequirao, I began my descent towards Choquequirao Puquio. The trail was steep and rocky, requiring careful footing. My hiking boots, thankfully, provided excellent support, though I did wish I had remembered my gaiters. The descent was tough on the knees, but the anticipation of exploring the ruins kept me going. The landscape began to change as I descended, with more vegetation and a palpable sense of history in the air.

Choquequirao Puquio is an archaeological site often overshadowed by Machu Picchu, but it is equally deserving of attention. Perched at an elevation of 3,050 meters, this ancient Incan city is surrounded by stunning mountain vistas and lush valleys. The site itself is vast, featuring impressive terraced agricultural fields, ceremonial platforms, and intricate stone structures, all of which showcase the ingenuity of Incan architecture and engineering. It is believed that Choquequirao was built by Tupaq Inka Yupanqui as an important religious and ceremonial center.

Exploring the ruins was a truly awe-inspiring experience. The stonework was incredible, a testament to the skill and artistry of the Incas. I wandered through the terraces, imagining the people who once lived and worked here. The solitude added to the mystique, allowing me to connect with the site on a deeper level. The site is divided into several sectors, including ceremonial areas and agricultural terraces, each offering insight into the daily life and spiritual practices of the Inca people. What truly struck me was the advanced hydraulic knowledge of the Incas, evident in the aqueduct systems and fountains.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are not about reaching a destination, but about the journey itself and the discoveries made along the way.

After spending a few hours exploring Choquequirao Puquio, it was time to head back. I grabbed lunch at Organika Restaurant in Cusco. The organic food was delicious and fresh, and they use ingredients from their own garden and local orchard. I enjoyed a hearty meal, replenishing my energy for the journey ahead. It's amazing how satisfying a simple, well-prepared meal can be after a day of strenuous activity.

The return trek was challenging, but I was buoyed by the sense of accomplishment from the day's adventures. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains. The scenery was even more magical in the soft light, and I paused frequently to capture the moment. As I descended, I reflected on the day's experiences. The physical challenge, the stunning scenery, and the connection with history had all combined to create a truly unforgettable day. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible region.

Back in Cusco, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse. The restaurant is known for transforming Peruvian ingredients into unforgettable meals prepared on volcanic stone. I ordered a steak, cooked to perfection, and savored every bite. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. The steak was served with four dipping sauces: yellow chilli, balsamic honey, hauacatay or Andean mint and herb butter. Uchu is located in the heart of the Historic Center of Cusco, in a historic colonial house.

To cap off the evening, I headed to Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant for a well-deserved beer. The atmosphere was lively, and the beer was excellent. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Mapacho provides a unique flavor and a culinary journey through the rich culture.

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my exploration of the Choquequirao region, with a trek further into the mountains. I'm looking forward to discovering more hidden gems and pushing my limits even further. I also need to make a stop at Speedy Gonzalo Camping Equipment to pick up a portable phone charger, as mine seems to have given up on me. Good thing I have my trusty travel guidebook to keep me company.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. The Choquequirao Trek is a true test of endurance, but it's also an opportunity to connect with history, nature, and oneself. It's an experience that I will cherish for a lifetime.
