Winter Wonders in Iceland: Exploring the Snæfellsnes Peninsula with Family
Day 3: Embracing Iceland's Raw Beauty: A Day of Cliffs, Gorges, and Hidden Charms
Discover Snæfellsnes Peninsula's dramatic landscapes: from Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge's hidden waterfalls to Arnarstapi's stunning cliffs.
Whispers of Water and Stone
Today was a day of embracing the raw, untamed beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It's a landscape that humbles you, reminding you of the immense power of nature and the stories etched into every rock and cliff face. With my family by my side, we set out to explore hidden gorges, dramatic coastlines, and the charming whispers of Icelandic folklore. It was a day filled with awe, a few chilly moments, and the kind of memories that we'll be sharing for years to come.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Harbour Cafe. The cozy atmosphere and warm coffee were the perfect start before venturing out into the Icelandic winter. Fuelled up, our first stop was the Gerðuberg Cliffs.
The Gerðuberg Cliffs were a sight to behold. As we approached, the basalt columns rose before us like a giant's fortress, a testament to the artistic power of nature. The colossal hexagonal pillars stood in perfect symmetry, a geological marvel formed thousands of years ago by flowing lava meeting the cool sea. Even Sailosi was impressed, and that says a lot for a 12-year-old glued to his tablet most of the time! We took a leisurely stroll along the old walking path near the cliffs, admiring the interesting icicle formations that adorned the basalt columns, a unique touch added by the Icelandic winter.

Driving in Iceland is an experience in itself. The landscape unfolds before you like a movie, each turn revealing a new vista of snow-dusted fields and distant mountains. It reminded me of the rugged landscapes of Fiji, though with a distinctively Arctic touch. I found myself explaining to Sailosi how the volcanic activity that shaped Iceland is similar to the forces that created our islands back home, a connection across continents forged by the Earth's fiery heart.
Next on our itinerary was the Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge. The drive there was stunning, and as we got closer, the anticipation grew. The gorge is nestled within the Botnsfjall Mountain, a narrow crevice that promises adventure.
The hike to the gorge entrance was a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula unfolding behind us made it worthwhile. As we reached the opening, a narrow fissure in the cliffside, I could feel the temperature drop and the air grow heavy with moisture.
The entrance to Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge was like stepping into another world. The narrow path, with its tall, mossy walls, created a dramatic scene. A small stream trickled along the floor, and the deeper we ventured, the more we had to navigate through the cold water. I was glad we'd all worn waterproof boots! Mere was a bit hesitant at first, but Sailosi, ever the adventurer, was already clambering over rocks, eager to see what lay ahead.

To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.
I was reminded of stories my grandmother used to tell me about hidden waterfalls in the Fijian highlands, places where spirits dwelled and the air was thick with magic. While Rauðfeldsgjá Gorge didn't have the same tropical lushness, it possessed a similar sense of ancient power, a feeling of being in a place where the veil between worlds was thin.
While we didn't venture too far inside due to the icy conditions, the experience was still incredible. The fresh air, the quiet setting, and the soft light filtering through the cliffs created a peaceful atmosphere. It was a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the grandeur of nature.
After our gorge adventure, we were all ready for a warm meal. We headed to Arnarstapi, a charming village known for its stunning cliffs and coastal scenery. Lunch at Hafnarvagninn-Fish & Chips was just what we needed – crispy fish, golden fries, and the comforting warmth of a family meal. With our bellies full, we set out to explore the Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint.
The Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint was nothing short of spectacular. The rugged coastline stretched out before us, with towering cliffs, crashing waves, and unique rock formations sculpted by centuries of wind and sea. The fresh ocean breeze invigorated us as we took in the panoramic views. Sailosi was fascinated by the Gatklettur arch, a natural stone arch framing the turbulent sea.

As we walked along the coastal trail, I couldn't help but think of the stories of Bárður Snæfellsás, the half-human, half-ogre whose spirit is said to watch over the peninsula from the Snæfellsjökull glacier. The dramatic landscape seemed to echo the saga, a reminder of the powerful forces that have shaped this land and the myths that have sprung from it.
The Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint is also a haven for birdwatchers. While we didn't spot any puffins, we saw numerous other seabirds nesting on the cliffs. It was a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of preserving these habitats.
Before heading back, we stopped at Álfar og Tröll ehf, a delightful gift shop in Grundarfjörður. The shop was filled with unique souvenirs and local crafts, from traditional Icelandic wool products to handcrafted jewelry. It was the perfect place to find a memento of our travels and support local artisans. Mere found a beautiful hand-knitted scarf, while Sailosi picked out a small Viking figurine.

As the day drew to a close, we had dinner at Samkomuhúsið Arnarstapa. The cozy restaurant offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the food was delicious. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the wonders of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Lóndrangar View Point, Saxhóll Crater, and Sögandisey Island Lighthouse. I'm particularly excited about Saxhóll Crater; the idea of standing on the edge of a volcanic crater is quite thrilling! We might even check out Narfeyrarstofa, a local bar, for a taste of Icelandic nightlife.
Back at our guesthouse, as I write this, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we shared today. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a place that stays with you, a landscape that whispers stories of fire and ice, of trolls and hidden people, of the enduring power of nature. I'm so glad I could share it with my family.
Tomorrow, we continue our adventure, seeking out new vistas and creating more memories in this magical land. I know there will be more incredible sights to see, and I can't wait to share them with you all.
I must remember to buy extra memory cards for the camera tomorrow. I knew I had forgotten something!
Embark on a family adventure to Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula, experiencing diverse landscapes and rich culture for a memorable winter holiday.
