A Fond Farewell to Iceland in Miniature

As our Icelandic adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared as a family on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Today, we embarked on a final journey through this land of fire and ice, determined to soak in every last bit of its magic. It's hard to believe our nine days here are up. I'm already plotting our return!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Hotel Langaholt & Restaurant. The spread was impressive, with homemade bread and local delicacies that gave us the energy we needed for our final day of exploration. I always appreciate when hotels put in the extra effort to showcase regional flavors. It reminds me of the fresh produce we grow back in our garden in Vancouver, especially the Fijian vegetables that remind Mere and me of home.

Fueled up, we set off towards the Eldborg Crater Trailhead. The drive itself was stunning, with the winter landscape creating a dramatic backdrop. The hike to Eldborg Crater was invigorating. The trail was a mix of smooth paths and rocky stretches, and I was glad we had our sturdy hiking boots. Even Sailosi managed the steeper sections with surprising ease, encouraged by the chains that are in place to assist hikers.

Reaching the top, the view was simply breathtaking. The panoramic vista of the surrounding lava fields and distant mountains was a perfect reminder of the raw beauty of Iceland. I tried to capture the moment with my camera, hoping the photos would do justice to the scene, but some things just need to be experienced firsthand. The crater itself was impressive, a testament to the volcanic forces that have shaped this island.

Next on our itinerary was the Gerðuberg Cliffs. As we approached, the basalt columns rose majestically from the landscape. The sheer scale and symmetry of these hexagonal pillars were awe-inspiring. It felt like we were standing before a giant's fortress. We spent some time wandering along the base of the cliffs, marveling at nature's artistry. The winter light cast long shadows, adding to the dramatic effect. I could see how the cliffs transform into a winter wonderland, with icicle formations decorating the basalt columns. Even in the cold, the beauty was undeniable.

For lunch, we stopped at Hafnarvagninn-Fish & Chips in Stykkishólmur. This unassuming food truck served up some of the best fish and chips I've ever had. The fish was fresh, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. Even Mere, who usually prefers healthier options, couldn't resist. Sailosi devoured his portion in minutes, declaring it the best meal of the trip. The chef might not be the friendliest guy, but there's a culinary genius hiding beneath that frown.

Our final stop of the day was Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring. The spring is located on a farm and is known for its naturally carbonated mineral water. The name Ölkelda translates to 'Ale Spring'. We sampled the water, which had a unique, slightly bubbly taste. It was surprisingly refreshing, and the locals believe it has healing properties. The area around the spring was serene, offering a moment of peace and reflection.

Before heading back, we stopped at the Snæfellsnes Visitor Center. It was a great place to learn more about the peninsula and its natural wonders. The staff were helpful and provided us with maps and brochures for future visits. I was particularly interested in the information about sustainable tourism, a topic that's close to my heart.

For our farewell dinner, we chose Narfeyrarstofa in Stykkishólmur. This charming restaurant is a family business with a cozy and romantic atmosphere. The food was exceptional, with a focus on local ingredients. We started with the fish soup, made with lobster cheese, shrimp, and scallops. For the main course, I had the Arctic char, while Mere opted for the cod. Sailosi, of course, went for the fish and chips again. The service was impeccable, and the views of the harbor added to the ambiance. It was the perfect way to end our trip.

As we prepare to leave Snæfellsnes tomorrow, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences we've had. This peninsula, often called 'Iceland in Miniature,' has truly lived up to its name. From volcanic craters to basalt cliffs, mineral springs to charming fishing villages, it has offered us a diverse array of landscapes and cultural encounters. Traveling with my family has made it even more special, creating memories that we will cherish for years to come. I know we'll be back to explore more of Iceland's wonders, perhaps during the summer months to experience a different side of this magical island. But for now, it's time to say 'takk' and prepare for our journey home.
Tomorrow marks the end of our trip, and we'll be heading back to Reykjavik to catch our flight back to Vancouver. I'm already looking forward to sharing our stories and photos with friends and family. And, of course, I can't wait to start planning our next adventure!
Until then, vinaka vakalevu from Iceland!
