Family Adventure in Seydisfjordur, Iceland
Day 9: Seydisfjordur: A Farewell Embrace
Reflecting on my family's final day in Seydisfjordur, Iceland, filled with serene marina views, local crafts, and culinary delights.
Adieu, Seydisfjordur!
As our family adventure in Seydisfjordur draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible memories we've made in this charming Icelandic town. Today was all about savoring the last moments, soaking in the serene atmosphere, and picking up a few keepsakes to remind us of our time here. It's amazing how a place can feel like home in just nine days. It's time to pack up our bags, but not before we bid adieu to this picturesque town in style.
The morning started, as most mornings do, with breakfast at Hótel Snæfell. Lena always appreciates a good buffet breakfast, and Snæfell didn't disappoint. Sofia enjoyed her usual pastries, while I opted for something a bit more traditional – Icelandic skyr with berries. It's funny how quickly we've all adapted to the local cuisine! I even managed to convince Sofia to try some.

After breakfast, we headed to the Seyðisfjörður Marina. The harbor was bustling with activity. The colorful buildings surrounding the marina made for a perfect photo opportunity. We watched as fishing boats came and went, their reflections shimmering on the water. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of the sea. I could have spent hours just sitting there, enjoying the tranquility, but Sofia was eager to explore.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where nature and culture intertwine to create a tapestry of unforgettable moments.
So, we strolled along the waterfront, admiring the boats and the stunning views of the fjord. The mountains seemed to cradle the town, providing a sense of protection and peace. It was hard to believe that this was our last day here. It felt like we had just arrived. We watched the *World Traveller* cruise ship depart from Bjólfsbakki, a reminder of how many people come to visit this special place. I made a mental note to check out Sea Angling Seyðisfjörður next time, maybe I can catch some local fish.
Next on our list was a visit to Steinholt & Co., a local gift shop that had caught Lena's eye earlier in the week. This shop is a treasure trove of Icelandic craftsmanship, filled with handmade crafts, traditional textiles, and unique artworks. As someone who appreciates art, Lena was in her element, carefully examining each item. Sofia, of course, was drawn to the colorful woolen toys. I found myself admiring the intricate designs of the traditional Icelandic sweaters. I thought about buying one, but Berlin summers aren't exactly sweater weather. I did pick up a small, hand-carved wooden puffin as a souvenir.

Guðrún Tinna Thorlacius, the owner, was incredibly welcoming. She shared stories about the local artisans and the history behind some of the crafts. It's these personal touches that make shopping at local businesses so much more rewarding than buying mass-produced souvenirs. We learned that the shop is in a house called Steinholt, and the colors in some of their wool products are based on the house's original colors! I even saw some sea swimming equipment, which reminded me of Guðrún Tinna's love for the sport. Maybe I'll give it a try when I get back to Berlin – though the Schlachtensee is a far cry from the fjords of Iceland.
For lunch, we decided to try The Filling Station / Seyðisfjörður Food Coop. This place came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. It's a small, family-run business that focuses on organic, locally sourced ingredients. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with a rustic decor that reflected the town's unique character. I was excited to try some fresh, local produce.

Lena ordered the chef's choice, which featured fresh fish with lots of healthy veggies. Sofia opted for a simple pizza, while I went for one of their famous sourdough sandwiches. The food was delicious, and it was clear that the ingredients were of the highest quality. We also tried some of their fresh-pressed juices, which were the perfect complement to our meal. The Filling Station also functions as a produce market, so we picked up some organic snacks for the road.
After lunch, we took one last stroll through the town. We walked along the famous Rainbow Street, leading up to the iconic blue church, Seyðisfjarðarkirkja. It's such a whimsical and charming sight, and it perfectly captures the spirit of Seydisfjordur. We stopped to take a few more photos, wanting to capture every last detail of this magical place. It was a bit cloudy, but that didn't stop us from enjoying the view. The temperature was mild, around 47-52°F, perfect for a leisurely walk.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to one last Icelandic culinary experience. For dinner, we chose Kaffi Lára El Grillo Bar. This family-operated restaurant and bar is located by the lagoon in central Seyðisfjörður. It's known for its locally brewed beer and Icelandic grilled meats, as well as its quality coffee and homemade cakes. It seemed like the perfect place to end our trip.

The atmosphere at Kaffi Lára was lively and welcoming. We settled into a cozy corner and ordered our meals. Lena went for the vegetarian option, while Sofia and I decided to try the burgers. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. We also sampled some of the local beers, which were surprisingly good. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to celebrate our last night in Seydisfjordur.
After dinner, we walked back to Hótel Snæfell, our hearts full of memories. As I packed our bags, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness. Seydisfjordur had truly captured our hearts. It's a place where nature, culture, and community come together to create a unique and unforgettable experience. I know that we'll be back someday, but for now, it's time to say goodbye.
Tomorrow, we start our journey back to Reykjavik, and then it's back to Berlin. I'm looking forward to seeing our apartment in Prenzlauer Berg again, but I'll always cherish the memories we made here in Seydisfjordur. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of stepping outside our comfort zones and exploring new places. It's also been a reminder of the importance of family, and the joy of sharing these experiences with the people I love most.
As I close this chapter of our Icelandic adventure, I want to thank Seydisfjordur for its beauty, its charm, and its warm hospitality. You've given us memories that will last a lifetime. Until next time, bless bless!
I'm already thinking about our next adventure. Maybe we'll explore more of Iceland, or perhaps we'll venture to a completely different part of the world. One thing is for sure – the travel bug has bitten us, and we're ready for more.
And as I drift off to sleep, I can still hear the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore, and I can still see the colorful houses of Seydisfjordur shimmering in the twilight. It's a memory that I'll carry with me always.
Until next time, world. Jose out.
