Solo Adventure in Futaleufu: A Patagonian Escape
Day 4: Chasing Views and Local Brews: A Day of Discovery in Futaleufu
Exploring the stunning vistas of Mirador del Diablo and the serene Laguna de la Paz, followed by local flavors and nightlife in Futaleufu.
A Day of Patagonian Panoramas
Today was all about soaking in the raw beauty of Futaleufu and experiencing its local charm. From breathtaking viewpoints to cozy restaurants and a lively pub, it was a day that perfectly captured the essence of this Patagonian paradise. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded my Berlin apartment for a life of travel, even if just for a little while.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Huilque. The reviews online raved about their coffee, and as a caffeine aficionado, I had to check it out. It's a cozy spot on Gabriela Mistral street , and I quickly understood why it’s so beloved. Cami and Seba, the owners, clearly pour their heart into every cup. I ordered a latte with oat milk and a vegan muffin, both of which were delicious. Fueled up and ready to go, I set off for Mirador del Diablo.

The hike up to Mirador del Diablo was invigorating. The trail was a bit steep in places, but the panoramic views of the Andes and the Futaleufu River were more than worth the effort. The landscape truly felt like a painting brought to life, living up to the local saying “un paisaje pintado por Dios”. I spent a good hour just taking it all in, snapping photos, and breathing in the crisp mountain air. I even ran into a couple of fellow hikers from Argentina, and we shared stories of our travels over a quick mate.
Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that require a bit of effort to reach.
Next on the agenda was Laguna de la Paz. This serene lagoon, located just south of town, is known for its tranquil waters and stunning surroundings. The temperatures are warm enough for swimming and kayaking. I opted for a leisurely walk along the shore, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The ripio road that hugs the lagoon eventually connects to the Las Escalas valley via an old suspension bridge. I made a mental note to explore that area sometime during the rest of my trip.

For lunch, I headed to Restaurant Encuentro. I was hoping to try some authentic Chilean cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant atmosphere. I ordered pastel de choclo, a traditional corn pie, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were rich and comforting, and it was the perfect way to refuel after my morning adventures.

After lunch, I took some time to wander around the town of Futaleufu. The colorful buildings and friendly locals exuded a welcoming vibe. I stopped by a local artisan shop and picked up a hand-woven scarf as a souvenir for Lena. She'll love the vibrant colors and the intricate design, I'm sure. I also learned that Futaleufu is preparing to host the Adventure Travel World Summit in October 2025. It sounds like it will be a great opportunity to showcase the region’s natural beauty and adventure tourism offerings.
As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to some sushi at Karü Susheria Futaleufú. I know, sushi in Patagonia might seem a bit out of place, but this place came highly recommended. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The sushi was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the presentation was impeccable. It’s amazing how they manage to create such high-quality sushi in such a remote location. The restaurant itself has a warm and welcoming ambiance. It’s the perfect spot for a casual dinner or a special occasion.

To cap off the night, I ventured to Pub Scorpions. This lively bar is a local favorite, known for its welcoming atmosphere and extensive drink menu. The interior has a rustic decor that reflects the local culture. I ordered a local craft beer and struck up a conversation with a couple of locals. They shared stories about the history of Futaleufu and recommended some hidden gems to explore during my trip. The pub was open late, and it was the perfect place to unwind after a day of adventures.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I’m excited to explore Laguna del Azul and Piedra del Aguila. I’ve heard that Laguna del Azul is a hidden gem, with crystal-clear waters and stunning views of Cerro Tres Monjas. And Piedra del Aguila is supposed to be a unique rock formation that resembles an eagle. I plan to have breakfast at Rio Grande Restaurant, lunch at La Yunta, and dinner at Restaurant Martin Pescador. I might also stop by Patagonia Futa Mate to pick up some local mate tea.
Today was a reminder of why I embarked on this solo adventure in the first place. It’s about disconnecting from the digital world, immersing myself in nature, and connecting with local cultures. And Futaleufu is the perfect place to do just that. I am so glad that I came here, and I cannot wait to see what tomorrow brings. I might even need to get Lena out here sometime soon!
I am starting to get excited about the rest of the trip! I am hoping to find some time to give Lena and Sofia a call tomorrow if I can find a decent enough connection in town. I miss them both terribly, but I know that this time away is important for me to recharge and reconnect with myself. I also need to remember to buy those sunglasses and a travel pillow – those long bus rides are killer!
I will make sure to post again tomorrow, so stay tuned!
