A Day of Discovery in Futaleufu

Today was one of those days where the unexpected detours turned out to be the highlights. I set out with a plan, but as any seasoned traveler knows, the best stories often come from veering off the beaten path. Futaleufu, with its stunning landscapes and welcoming atmosphere, proved to be the perfect place for a bit of spontaneous exploration.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Rio Grande Restaurant. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals and fellow travelers gearing up for their own adventures. I opted for a traditional Chilean breakfast, which gave me the energy I needed for the day's hikes. The staff were incredibly friendly, offering tips and suggestions for exploring the area. After breakfast, I made a quick stop at Patagonia Futa Mate [null], a local shop, to pick up some mate to enjoy during my hikes. It’s become a bit of a ritual for me to try the local mate wherever I go. It reminds me of sharing stories with Lena back in Berlin over a warm cup of tea.

My first destination was Laguna del Azul. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the breathtaking Patagonian landscape. The laguna is aptly named; the water was an incredible shade of blue, surrounded by lush forests and towering mountains. I spent a couple of hours hiking around the lake, soaking in the tranquility and snapping photos of the stunning scenery. I even tried my hand at skipping stones, a simple pleasure that always brings me back to my childhood in New Mexico.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones you never planned.

Next up was Piedra del Aguila. The trek up to the viewpoint was a bit challenging, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. From there, I could see the entire Futaleufu valley, with its winding rivers, rolling hills, and snow-capped peaks. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight, one that reminded me of the raw, untamed beauty of Patagonia. I took some time to simply sit and take it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such incredible landscapes.

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to town, stopping for a late lunch at La Yunta. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Chilean dishes. I ordered a hearty stew, which was the perfect way to warm up after a day of hiking. While I ate, I chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the history and culture of Futaleufu. It’s moments like these that make travel so rewarding, connecting with people from different backgrounds and sharing stories and experiences.

For dinner, I decided to try Restaurante Martin Pescador, a local favorite known for its fresh seafood and innovative cuisine. Chef Tatiana Villablanca has been creating innovative locavore dishes at Martin Pescador in southern Chile for more than two decades. The restaurant’s focus on locavore cooking featuring ingredients grown from her own seeds made the experience unique. I opted for the grilled salmon, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The restaurant had a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the staff were attentive and friendly. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I took a stroll through the town square, soaking in the sights and sounds of Futaleufu at night. The town was bustling with activity, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the evening air. I stopped for a moment to admire the stars, which seemed brighter and more numerous than I’d ever seen them before. It was a peaceful, serene moment, one that I’ll cherish for a long time.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Futaleufu is more than just a destination; it’s an experience. It’s a place where you can disconnect from the stresses of modern life and reconnect with nature, with yourself, and with others. It’s a place where you can challenge yourself physically and mentally, pushing your limits and discovering new strengths. And it’s a place where you can simply relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life, like a beautiful sunset, a delicious meal, or a friendly conversation.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I’m excited to explore Playa Los Lolos and Laguna Hermana [null]. I’m also looking forward to trying Once Once Restaurant for breakfast and La Base 13K Restaurante Futaleufú for dinner [null]. And perhaps I’ll stop by Patio Cervecero Futaleufu 2019 for a drink in the evening [null]. But whatever tomorrow brings, I know it will be another unforgettable day in Futaleufu.

I am struck by how the Futaleufu River is commonly rated by specialized media as one of the best rivers in the world for kayaking and rafting. The name Futaleufu derives from a Mapudungun word meaning Big River. It will be nice to see the river again tomorrow.

This trip is a reminder of why I started my travel blog in the first place – to share these kinds of transformative experiences with others. Maybe it’ll even inspire Lena and Sofia to join me on my next adventure. For now, though, I’m content to soak in the beauty of Futaleufu and share my stories with you all.

The Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) will be held in Chile from October 13 to 16, 2025. It is great to see Chile hosting the world's biggest adventure tourism event.
