A Day of Discovery in Urbino

Today was a day of exploration and relaxation in Urbino, a city that continues to surprise and enchant us at every turn. From historical fortresses to tranquil gardens and bustling city squares, Urbino offered a diverse range of experiences that kept my family and me captivated throughout the day. The weather was perfect, with a gentle breeze and warm sunshine, making our adventures even more enjoyable.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Caffe Centrale Urbino. As someone who appreciates a good strong coffee to kickstart the day, I was not disappointed. The cafe had a cozy, local feel, and we enjoyed some delicious pastries alongside our cappuccinos. It was the perfect way to fuel up before embarking on our Urbino explorations.

Our first stop was the imposing Fortezza Albornoz. As a historical building restoration consultant, I am naturally drawn to such structures, and this fortress did not disappoint. The walk up to the Fortezza was a bit of a climb, but the panoramic views of Urbino and the surrounding countryside were more than worth the effort. The fortress itself is a fascinating piece of history, dating back to the 14th century. Mateus was particularly intrigued by the displays of war equipment from the 14th and 16th centuries housed within the Bella Gerit Museum, located inside the fortress. Isabela and I appreciated the architectural details and the sense of stepping back in time.

I found myself reflecting on my childhood in Ouro Preto, Brazil, a city similarly steeped in history. It's amazing how different cultures and continents can share a common thread through their historical architecture. It's moments like these that remind me why I chose my profession.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

After immersing ourselves in history, we sought a change of pace at the Botanical Garden of the University. What a contrast! This serene oasis provided a welcome respite from the stone and history of the fortress. The garden, though not expansive at 2,200 square meters, is meticulously maintained and packed with a surprising variety of plant species. Mateus was fascinated by the Hortus simplicium, a section dedicated to medicinal plants, each labeled with its traditional uses. Isabela, with her background as an elementary school teacher, turned the visit into an impromptu lesson on the importance of biodiversity and the historical uses of plants.

The Botanical Garden offered more than just plants; it provided a sense of tranquility. Walking through the garden, surrounded by the soft rustling of leaves and the gentle murmur of other visitors, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. It was a reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple beauties of nature, something that can be easily forgotten in the hustle and bustle of daily life. Plus, the entrance fee was only 1 euro, a bargain for such a delightful experience!

Next on our itinerary was the Republic Square, the heart of Urbino. This bustling square is surrounded by beautifully preserved Renaissance architecture and is a hub of activity. We took some time to simply sit at a café, people-watch, and soak in the atmosphere. I couldn't help but imagine what it must have been like during the Renaissance, with artists, scholars, and merchants all converging in this very spot.

As the afternoon wore on, our stomachs started to rumble, signaling lunchtime. We headed to Osteria Gula - Urbino (pu), a restaurant recommended for its traditional Marchigiana cuisine. The osteria had a cozy, rustic ambiance, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We shared a selection of local specialties, including handmade pasta with truffles and grilled meats. The food was hearty and delicious, providing a true taste of the region. Mateus, who can sometimes be a picky eater, surprised us by devouring a plate of the *passatelli* (a type of pasta typical of the region).

In the late afternoon, we stopped by Art Café Urbino for a refreshing drink. This bar had a relaxed, artistic vibe, with colorful paintings adorning the walls. I opted for a glass of local wine, while Isabela enjoyed an Aperol spritz and Mateus a fruit juice. It was a perfect spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing.

As evening approached, we made our way to Ristorante San Giovanni Urbino for dinner. This restaurant, housed in a historic building, offered a more formal dining experience than our lunch spot. The menu featured a mix of traditional and modern Italian dishes, and we were impressed by the quality of the food and the attentive service. I ordered the *coda di rospo* (monkfish), which was cooked to perfection, while Isabela opted for the *filetto di manzo* (beef fillet). Mateus, predictably, chose the pasta. The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere, and we enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring each bite.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took one last stroll through the Republic Square. The square was now illuminated by soft lights, creating a magical ambiance. The sounds of laughter and conversation filled the air, and we felt a sense of contentment and belonging. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the diversity of experiences that Urbino has to offer. From the historical grandeur of Fortezza Albornoz to the tranquil beauty of the Botanical Garden and the lively atmosphere of Republic Square, there was something for everyone in our family to enjoy. And the delicious food, of course, was a highlight in itself. Urbino has truly captured our hearts, and I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, where we plan to visit Museo diocesano Albani, Oratorio della Grotta and Punto Panoramico di Urbino. Good night!
