Solo Exploration of Salta's History and Culture
Day 8: Reflections on Salta: A Cultural Immersion
Delving into Salta's vibrant culture and history, exploring museums, artisan markets, and savoring local flavors on my final day.
A Farewell to Salta's Soul
As my journey in Salta nears its end, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant tapestry of experiences that have colored my days here. Today was a culmination of historical exploration and cultural immersion, a fitting farewell to this captivating city. It's amazing how a place can seep into your soul, leaving you with memories and a longing to return.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cocina Ramirez!, a local spot recommended for its authentic Salteño flavors. I savored every bite, knowing it would fuel a day of exploration. The 'calzón de jamón y queso' was the perfect start, a comforting blend of simple ingredients that spoke volumes about the local cuisine.

Fueled and ready, I set out to delve deeper into Salta's past at the Museum of Anthropology. The museum is housed in a building that seems to mimic Inca terraces. Inside, eleven rooms showcased treasures of the Northwest, Inca culture and pre-Hispanic peoples. The artifacts told stories of the indigenous cultures that shaped this region, offering a profound connection to the land's ancient roots.

To truly understand a place, you must walk through its history, breathe its air, and taste its flavors.
I learned about the archeologist Eduardo Mario Cigliano, who worked at the Santa Rosa de Tastil Ruins. His collection unearthed at the site initiated the museum's creation. It was fascinating to see the ceramics and textiles, some hundreds of years old, and to learn about the traditions and beliefs of the people who created them. The museum is also responsible for enforcing legislation regarding archeological and paleontological heritage.
Next, I ventured to the President Jose E. Uriburu Museum, a colonial-style house that once belonged to President Jose Evaristo Uriburu. The building itself is a significant example of Salta's domestic architecture. Walking through its rooms felt like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the domestic life of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The house was originally built in the mid-18th century by José Fermín de Zabala. Later, it was home to Juan Antonio Álvarez de Arenales, governor of Salta. José Evaristo Uriburu, who would become President of Argentina, was born there. In 1940, Uriburu donated the house to the nation.
The museum showcased furniture, utensils, and other items that reflected the everyday life of the colonial era. There was also a room dedicated to General Juan Antonio Alvarez de Arenales. It was fascinating to see how the house had been modified over time to suit the needs of different eras.
After immersing myself in history, I decided to indulge in a late lunch at La Nueva Mega Peña La Panadería del Chuña. This 'peña' is known for music and traditional regional dishes. The 'peña' is quite large, with a capacity for 1,000 people. I enjoyed the lively atmosphere and the sounds of local music. The food was good, but the music really saved the experience. The building was decorated well and the waiters were attentive.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, I headed to the Mercado Artesanal de Salta. This artisan market is a treasure trove of local crafts, from textiles and silverwork to pottery and leather goods. I spent hours browsing the stalls, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans.

I picked up a few souvenirs for Isabela and Mateus, knowing they would appreciate the unique craftsmanship of Salta. I got Mateus a small leather 'gaucho' belt and Isabela a woven shawl.
As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to a final Salteño dinner at Rancho Aparte. This restaurant is known for home-style cooking in a cozy atmosphere. It's a 'closed-door restaurant' where you can savor home-cooked meals. They focus on regional cuisine and use local products.

I savored the flavors of the region, reflecting on the incredible journey I've had in Salta. From the stunning landscapes to the rich history and vibrant culture, this city has captured my heart. I'm already planning my return, perhaps with Isabela and Mateus next time, to share the magic of Salta with my family.
Tomorrow, I bid farewell to Salta and begin my journey back to Kingston. While I'm eager to see my family, a part of me will remain here, amidst the mountains and the music, forever changed by the spirit of Salta.
Even though I am eager to return home to Isabela and Mateus, I know that I will carry the spirit of Salta with me. I'm already envisioning sharing stories of my adventures with them, inspiring them to embark on their own journeys of discovery. Perhaps next time, we'll explore Salta together, creating new memories as a family amidst the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture of this captivating region. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – to experience new cultures, broaden my horizons, and create lasting memories that enrich my life and the lives of those I love.
I am reminded of my own childhood in Ouro Preto and how that has shaped who I am today. I hope that this trip will help me pass on that love of history and culture to my son, Mateus. I want him to be as passionate about history and architecture as I am.
Until next time, Salta. Thank you for the memories and the lessons learned. This Brazilian-Canadian will never forget you.
