Day 5: Exploring the Mystical Canyon of Ásbyrgi: A Journey into Icelandic Folklore
Discover the legendary Ásbyrgi canyon and its visitor center, immersing yourself in Iceland's history, nature, and local flavors.
Whispers of Giants in Ásbyrgi
Today’s adventure took us deep into the heart of Icelandic folklore and geological wonders. We ventured north to explore the legendary Ásbyrgi canyon, a place where the veil between worlds feels thin, and the stories of old come alive. It was a day of stunning landscapes, intriguing history, and delicious food, all wrapped in the crisp September air.
The day began, as most do on this trip, with a hearty breakfast at Fosshotel Húsavík. The buffet was a welcome sight, and I made sure to load up on skyr and some freshly baked bread to fuel our explorations. Isabela always jokes that I eat enough for two when travelling, but I need the energy to fully absorb all these new experiences! After breakfast, we gathered our things and set off for Ásbyrgi.

The drive itself was an experience. The Icelandic landscape continued to unfold before us, a tapestry of moss-covered lava fields and distant mountains. The weather in Húsavík in September can be quite variable, and today was no exception. The temperature hovered around 44°F (6.9°C), and the sky was a mix of মেঘ and sunshine. I was glad I'd packed my waterproof jacket and warm layers, remembering how essential they are in Iceland. I even remembered my sunglasses, thankfully!
Our first stop was the magnificent Ásbyrgi canyon. As we approached, the sheer scale of this horseshoe-shaped wonder became apparent. Legend has it that Ásbyrgi was formed by Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse of the Norse god Odin, who touched down here and created this unique geological formation. Standing at the edge, looking down into the verdant depths, it’s easy to believe such a mythical tale. The canyon is immense, with cliffs rising up to 100 meters high. The scale of it all is truly awe-inspiring.
Sometimes, the most extraordinary stories are etched not in books, but in the landscapes that surround us.
We then visited Gljúfrastofa - Ásbyrgi Visitor Centre. The center provided a wealth of information about the canyon's geology, history, and the surrounding Vatnajökull National Park. I was particularly fascinated by the exhibits detailing the catastrophic glacial floods that shaped this area over millennia. Mateus, fascinated by volcanoes, was especially interested in the volcanic activity that contributed to the canyon's formation. The visitor center is really well done and does a great job of explaining the natural forces at play here. They also had a small shop where I picked up a few souvenirs, including a book about Icelandic folklore for Mateus. It's always great to encourage his love of reading!

After immersing ourselves in the history and science of Ásbyrgi, it was time for a hike. We chose an easy trail that led us along the canyon rim, offering breathtaking views of the lush forest below. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine and damp earth. As we walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and tranquility. The vastness of the landscape and the silence broken only by the sounds of nature were incredibly soothing. Isabela, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out various species of birds and plants, sharing her knowledge with us. She has a knack for spotting the smallest details that I often miss.
By lunchtime, we were all feeling quite peckish. We drove back to Húsavík and headed to Grill 66. I had heard good things about their burgers, and I was in the mood for something satisfying. The place was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists. I ordered a classic burger with fries, while Isabela opted for a tuna sandwich. Mateus, of course, went for the chicken nuggets. The food was delicious and hit the spot perfectly. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. I can definitely see why it's a popular spot in town. The prices are attractive, too.

In the late afternoon, after our exploration of Ásbyrgi, we returned to Húsavík for dinner at Viðbót. This cozy café offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing evening meal. I was eager to try some traditional Icelandic cuisine, and Viðbót didn't disappoint. The menu featured a variety of dishes made with local ingredients, from fresh seafood to hearty meat dishes. I decided to try the fish of the day, while Isabela chose a vegetarian option. Mateus, as always, was happy with a simple plate of pasta. The food was delicious and comforting, and the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. It felt like dining in someone's home. I think this place is often overlooked by tourists, but it's a real gem.

Before heading back to the hotel, we decided to stop for a drink at Gamli Baukur. This landmark restaurant and bar is located right on the harbor, offering stunning views of the sea. The maritime-themed decor created a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the sound of live music filled the air. I ordered a local beer, while Isabela chose a glass of wine. Mateus was happy with a juice box. We sat by the window, watching the boats bobbing in the water and listening to the music. It was the perfect way to end a memorable day.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Ásbyrgi is a truly magical place, a testament to the power of nature and the richness of Icelandic folklore. The visit to Gljúfrastofa - Ásbyrgi Visitor Centre enhanced the experience, providing valuable context and information. And the delicious meals at Grill 66 and Viðbót nourished our bodies and souls. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and connection. And it wouldn't be a proper Sunday without a stop at a local bar for a drink, would it?
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Exploration Museum and Hljóðaklettar. It's hard to believe we are already on Day 6 of our trip. Time really flies when you're having fun!
Until then, bless.
