From the clang of Viking steel to the gentle lapping of fjord waters, Gudvangen offered a sensory feast that left me both exhilarated and profoundly at peace. It’s amazing how much history and natural beauty can be packed into a single day, especially when shared with great friends.

Our day began, as most days here do, with breakfast at the Gudvangen Fjordtell. The buffet was simple but satisfying, a continental spread that fueled us up for the day's adventures. I enjoyed a quick chat with the staff about the local area, gathering some insights about the Viking village. After a hearty breakfast, we set off to Njardarheimr, the Viking village.

The air was crisp as we walked towards Njardarheimr, the renowned Viking village. It felt surreal to be transported back over a thousand years, surrounded by the echoes of Norse life. As someone fascinated by history and sustainability, I was eager to immerse myself in the Viking way of life. Lena shares my enthusiasm for cultural experiences, and I knew she would have loved this. I made a mental note to bring her here someday. The village itself is nestled in a stunning location, with the dramatic fjord landscape providing a breathtaking backdrop to the rustic wooden structures. The attention to detail was remarkable, from the clothing worn by the villagers to the tools they used in their crafts.

We joined a guided tour, which I highly recommend to anyone visiting. It turned out to be much harder than it looked! After a few clumsy attempts, I finally managed to hit the target, much to the amusement of my friends. The thrill of landing that axe was definitely a highlight of the day.

After our Viking adventure, we strolled down to the Gudvangen Jetty. The sun was shining, and the fjord was shimmering with a thousand shades of blue. The jetty is a perfect spot to soak in the natural beauty of the area. The fresh air and stunning views were a welcome contrast to the historical immersion of the Viking village. I took some photos of the fjord, promising myself to try and capture its beauty as best as possible.

For lunch, we headed to the Gudvangen À la carte restaurant (KONGSHALLEN). The restaurant is conveniently located near the Fjordtell hotel and offers stunning views of the Nærøyfjord. I had heard good things about their fish soup, so I decided to give it a try. It was absolutely delicious, a creamy and flavorful concoction that warmed me from the inside out. My friends opted for the vegan burger, which they said was surprisingly good. It’s always great to find a restaurant that caters to different dietary needs, reflecting the inclusive spirit I appreciate in Berlin’s culinary scene.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in some more local flavors at the Gudvangen seafood restaurant (SJØMATRESTAURANTEN). The restaurant is situated right by the fjord, offering spectacular views of the mountains and passing boats. Being close to the water added to the experience. I opted for the seafood platter, a generous assortment of fresh catches that showcased the best of Norwegian seafood. Each bite was a burst of flavor, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients. The salmon was particularly memorable, melting in my mouth with its delicate texture and rich taste.

As the day wound down, we decided to check out Postaabneriet pub & cafe AS for a relaxing evening. The pub had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. We ordered some local beers and shared stories of our adventures, laughing and reminiscing about the day's highlights. The pub seemed to be a local favorite, with a mix of tourists and residents mingling and enjoying the convivial atmosphere. It reminded me of some of the pubs Lena and I frequent in Berlin, where the sense of community is just as strong.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Gudvangen has to offer. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine, creating a unique and unforgettable experience. From the Viking village to the serene fjord, every moment was filled with wonder and discovery. I’m grateful for the opportunity to explore this corner of Norway, and I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you.

Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Flåm Church and Brekkefossen. I’ve heard that Flåm Church is a beautiful example of traditional Norwegian architecture, and I’m eager to see it for myself. Brekkefossen, on the other hand, promises to be a breathtaking natural spectacle, with cascading waterfalls and stunning views. I’m also excited about visiting the Mall of Norway, where I hope to find some unique souvenirs to take back home. After our exploration, we plan to dine at Viking Kroa and Gudvangen Hotelldrift AS, hoping to experience more of the local cuisine. It sounds like another day filled with adventure and discovery!
