A Day of Coastal Exploration

Today was all about embracing the coastal beauty of Cardwell and soaking in the stunning views of the Hinchinbrook Channel. I was eager to explore this gateway to Hinchinbrook Island, and the day certainly didn't disappoint.

I started my day with a hearty breakfast at The Grand Hotel Thursday Island. Fueling up with a classic Aussie breakfast was essential before setting out to explore. The hotel had a cozy, old-world charm that made the experience even more enjoyable. It reminded me a bit of some of the historic cafes Lena and I visited in Europe, each with its own unique story etched into its walls. I had a quick chat with one of the locals who told me Lisa Buchtmann, a former army truck driver and small business owner from Cardwell, will stand as One Nation's candidate for the Hinchinbrook by-election. It's always interesting to hear about local happenings and the people shaping the community.

My first stop was the Cardwell Jetty. The jetty stretches out into the Coral Sea, offering panoramic views of Hinchinbrook Island. The weather was perfect, with a high of 82°F (28°C) and a gentle breeze. I took a leisurely stroll along the jetty, watching local anglers trying their luck. The water was crystal clear, and I could see small fish darting around the pylons. I even spotted a few colorful starfish clinging to the sides. The jetty is more than just a fishing spot; it's a hub for recreational activities. Families were picnicking on the foreshore, enjoying the lush greenery and well-maintained park surroundings.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences come from simply being present in a beautiful place, letting the scenery and atmosphere seep into your soul.

After the jetty, I decided to explore the Hinchinbrook Channel. This channel separates the mainland from Hinchinbrook Island and is a haven for diverse marine life. I learned that the Aboriginal name for the channel is Bolan Milbirmi. The channel is bordered by extensive mangrove forests, which serve as a vital habitat for many species. I considered taking a boat tour to get a closer look, but instead opted to drive along the coast, stopping at various viewpoints to capture the scenery. The Hinchinbrook Channel is a unique biogeographical region, encompassing Hinchinbrook Island and the coastal plain south to the Herbert River Delta.

For lunch, I stopped at Lucinda Cove Resort. The resort offered stunning views of the channel, and I enjoyed a delicious seafood meal while soaking in the scenery. It was incredibly peaceful, and I found myself reflecting on my journey so far. This solo trip has been a wonderful opportunity for introspection and connecting with nature. I thought about Lena and how much she would have loved this view. We've always cherished our quiet moments together, whether it's hiking in the Brandenburg countryside or simply enjoying a sunset on a beach in Costa Rica.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore some of Cardwell's other attractions. I drove along the Cardwell Forest Drive, a scenic route that winds through the Cardwell State Forest. This drive is known for its natural wonders, including Attie Creek Falls and the Cardwell Spa Pool. I made a stop at the Cardwell Spa Pool, a local hidden gem with bright blue water caused by the minerals from surrounding rocks. Although I didn't take a dip, I enjoyed the picturesque relief from the Queensland humidity. The Cardwell Forest Drive is a must-do for anyone visiting the area, offering a mix of rocky trails and shared routes with incredible lookout points.

Before dinner, I made a pit stop at Lees Hotel - the Pub with No Beer. This iconic pub has a fascinating history, made famous by Slim Dusty's song. I learned that the song was based on a poem written by Dan Sheahan, a local sugarcane farmer, after American servicemen drank the pub dry during World War II. It was fascinating to stand in a place with so much history and local lore. I had a quick chat with the bartender, who shared a few more stories about the pub's past. He told me that Lees Hotel is recognized as standing on the site of the original Pub With No Beer. Apparently, in December 1943, American servicemen from the 22nd Bomb Group passed through Ingham en route to Port Moresby, stopped at the Day Dawn Hotel overnight and drank all the beer.

For dinner, I headed to Cardwell @ the Beach (Lyndock Motel & Bottlemart). This restaurant offered a relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. I enjoyed a perfectly cooked steak while watching the sunset over the ocean. It was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and natural beauty. I thought about how much I enjoy these solo adventures, but I also missed sharing these moments with Lena. Perhaps we could plan a trip back here together someday.

As the evening drew to a close, I reflected on the day's adventures. Cardwell is a charming town with a laid-back vibe and stunning natural surroundings. The Hinchinbrook Channel is a true gem, offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into the region's rich biodiversity. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Haycock and Agnes Islands [i]. I'm looking forward to more hiking and exploring these untouched landscapes. I'll make sure to pack insect repellent and a waterproof jacket this time, learning from my earlier oversight. It's all part of the adventure, after all. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings as I continue my solo journey through Hinchinbrook Island.
